Crayfish interneurons were identified that appear to be directly responsible for presynaptic inhibition of primary afferent synapses during crayfish escape behavior. The interneurons are fired by a polysynaptic pathway triggered by the giant escape command axons. When directly stimulated, these interneurons produce short-latency, chloride-dependent primary afferent depolarizations and presynaptically inhibit primary afferent input to mechanosensory interneurons. 相似文献

The isolated heads of a Friesian bull and three large, Large White pigs were shot from various aspects with a 12-gauge shotgun using both a single 28 g solid lead projectile and buckshot, the latter consisting of nine individual lead pellets with a combined mass of 28 g. The sites of impact to the skull included the conventional frontal region, an occipital site and immediately behind the ear. A live mature Large White sow was shot with buckshot in the depression just caudal to the right ear, resulting in immediate insensibility and death. The damage caused to the isolated heads indicated that similar effects could be expected if the heads had been part of intact living animals. It is suggested that buckshot (nine lead pellets with a combined mass of 28 g) fired from a 12-gauge shotgun may be suitable for the emergency slaughter or euthanasia of a wide variety of domestic livestock and other species of animal. 相似文献

This paper examines changes in broom snakeweed populations (Gutierrezia sarothrae [Pursh] Britt. & Rusby) from 1979 to 2014 at three prairie grassland sites in New Mexico. Data gathered each fall were used to study broom snakeweed population dynamics and to estimate the probability that the relatively short-lived subshrub will die off or invade blue grama (Bouteloua gracilis [H.B.K. Lag]) rangelands. Annual broom snakeweed standing crop data were used to categorize populations as None (< 100 kg ha? 1), Light (< 300), Moderate (< 750), or Heavy (≥ 750). Ordered logit regression was then used to estimate the frequency of transition between these categories over time depending on environmental and site factors. Significant variables found to influence annual variation in broom snakeweed included the broom snakeweed standing crop and density observed the previous period (+ effect for continued broom snakeweed); grass standing crop the previous period (?); rainfall received from April to June (+); and average temperatures during April (+) and June (?). The probability of broom snakeweed invading an area that is currently without the plant ranges from about 1% to > 40% depending on environmental conditions and the amount of grass standing crop present. Transition probability estimates were also used in a Monte Carlo simulation model to evaluate the economics of broom snakeweed control. The economics of chemical broom snakeweed control were most strongly related to the rate of snakeweed reinvasion on treated areas and to the probability of natural die-off if infested areas were not sprayed. 相似文献

Rainbow trout habitat use is often described in high‐gradient, runoff‐driven, heterotrophic streams where geomorphic features and overhanging riparian vegetation provide channel complexity and cover. However, many rainbow trout populations thrive in rivers with contrasting aquatic habitat. We describe rainbow trout habitat use in a low‐gradient, groundwater‐dominated tailwater river where river flow management and macrophyte growth and senescence largely govern available trout habitat. In the summers of 2013 and 2014, available aquatic habitat (depth, velocity, macrophyte cover, substrate size) was quantified, while individual trout location was determined by radio telemetry and linked to environmental variables. Detailed habitat surveys indicate that macrophyte cover increases throughout the summer and is a strong determinant of in‐stream habitat characteristics. Paired logistic regression shows that adult rainbow trout prefer greater depths. Water depth increases with macrophyte abundance at both reach and local scales as plants restrict flow, and available trout habitat is linked to this seasonal pattern. When macrophyte abundance is high, adult trout show secondary preference for localised areas of lower macrophyte cover but otherwise show no selectivity for macrophyte cover, velocity or substrate size. Results suggest that submerged aquatic plants increased the quantity and quality of rainbow trout habitat as a source of channel complexity and cover. Macrophytes may play a similar role in other low‐gradient streams and should not be overlooked by fisheries managers considering habitat suitability. 相似文献

Summary The objectives of this work were to begin developing an experimental system for studying the demethylation of lignin by brown-rot fungi and to examine the influence of selected culture parameters. As substrate for demethylation, we used partially 3-O-demethylated lignin that had been isolated earlier from brown-rotted spruce wood; we remethylated with14CH3I, giving a lignin with both [3-14C]methoxyl and [4-14C]methoxyl groups. This lignin was added to pine wood flakes, which were incubated with selected brown-rot fungi, and the evolved14CO2 was trapped and measured. Of eight fungi examined,Gloeophyllum trabeum andWolfiporia cocos gave the highest rates of mineralization of the14C-methoxyl carbons. With the former but not the latter fungus, methoxyl mineralization was over twice as fast in an atmosphere of O2 than in air. Amending the cultures with ammonium tartrate suppressed mineralization to some extent. Further studies withG. trabeum showed that glutamate lowered the rate of mineralization and that glucose and glycerol sharply suppressed it. Addition of Fe2+ and Mn2+ slightly increased the rate of mineralization. Our results suggest that in unsupplemented cultures the rate-limiting step in methoxyl mineralization is the initial demethylation. Thus the two likely initial C1 products, methanol and formaldehyde (as14C compounds), were mineralized much more rapidly than the methoxyl carbon of the lignin (as was formic acid), and no low molecular weight labeled intermediates from the [14C]-methoxyl lignin accumulated in the cultures. Our results also provide evidence that the spruce lignin was partially polymerized byG. trabeum. Mineralization of the methoxyl carbon of a synthetic [3-14C]-methoxyl lignin was slower than that of the spruce lignin, suggesting either that the synthetic lignin was more recalcitrant or that the [4-14C]methoxyl group in the [3,4-14C]-methoxyl spruce lignin was attacked more readily.We thank Karen L.
