Cereal rye (Secale cereale L.) is an important forage crop in the USA for stocker cattle (Bos sp.) production, thus making forage yield an important breeding objective for the crop. However, little information is known about the repeatability for forage yield in this crop. The objectives of this research were to: (i) estimate variance components for forage yield from long‐term variety trials, (ii) estimate the repeatability for forage yield and (iii) relate this to breeding strategies for increased forage yield in rye. Trials were conducted over 14 years where 97 USA open‐pollinated varieties (OPVs) were evaluated. Repeatability ranged from 0.57 to 0.86 when the data were analysed by year for the 3 years with significant genotype main effects. Possible explanations for the lack of significant genotype main effects are discussed. Practical implications of these findings indicate that the development of improved cultivars with greater forage yield will require improved methods of selection based on family performance rather than the current methods based primarily on single plant visual selection.  相似文献

Sixteen European badgers (Meles meles) from three statutory removal operations were studied. Samples of tracheal aspirate, pooled lymph nodes and urine were cultured for mycobacteria. Seven of the badgers were infected with Mycobacterium bovis and had tuberculous pulmonary lesions which varied in severity from extensive granulomatous consolidation to microgranulomas which were not detectable grossly. Tuberculous lesions were also observed in the upper respiratory airways, intestines, kidneys, spleen, liver, thymus, pleura and lymph nodes. One badger had tuberculous bite wounds. The histopathological characteristics of the tuberculous reactions and the associated tissue damage in various organs, together with the gross pathology, indicate that both mildly and severely infected badgers have the potential to excrete M. bovis by several routes.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To describe the spatial orientation of the cemented acetabular component in cemented total hip arthroplasty, based on a ventrodorsal and lateral radiographic projection of the pelvis. METHODS: Equations were derived by using trigonometric relationships that describe the radiographic rotation about the longitudinal pelvic axis (alpha), transverse pelvic axis (beta), acetabular inclination (phi), acetabular inclination corrected for longitudinal pelvic rotation, version (phiC), acetabular version (theta), acetabular version corrected for longitudinal pelvic rotation (thetaC), acetabular inclination corrected for transverse pelvic rotation (phi(beta)), and acetabular version corrected for transverse pelvic rotation (theta(beta)) RESULTS: Alpha was calculated by using the equation alpha = sin(-1) (x/y) where x is the transverse distance between the dorsal spinous processes and the center of the pubis on a ventrodorsal radiograph and y is the distance from the pubis to the dorsal aspect of the first coccygeal vertebra perpendicular to the long axis of the pelvis on a lateral radiograph. Phi was calculated from the long axis (LA) and short axis (SA) of the ellipse formed by the radiopaque acetabular marker ring by using the equation phi = sin(-1) (SA/LA). phiC was calculated by using the equation phiC = phi +/- (alpha - tan(-1) (tan alpha cos thetaC)). Theta was determined as previously described. ThetaC was calculated by using the equation thetaC = tan(-1) (tan theta cos alpha). Theta(beta) and theta(beta) were calculated with the equations phi(beta) = tan(-1) (tan theta cos beta) and theta(beta) = theta - tan(-1) (sin beta), respectively. Beta could not be accurately determined from ventrodorsal and lateral pelvic radiographs. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: These techniques allow for more accurate postoperative radiographic assessment of acetabular component positioning. This information can then be used in retrospective or prospective analyses examining that effects of implant positioning on clinical outcome.  相似文献

Generally, colonization with Campylobacter jejuni is first detected in broilers 2-3 wk after hatching. Once introduced into a flock, this infection spreads very rapidly. The sources and routes of transmission of C. jejuni in broilers remain debatable. In this study, the spread of infection was monitored in a commercial multipen broiler house in which birds were contained in discrete groups and sampled sequentially. Colonization was monitored in two broiler flocks up to slaughter. Serotyping and fla typing methods were applied to differentiate all the C. jejuni strains isolated. In flock 1, colonization was first detected at 32 days of age in birds located at the rear of the house. By 40 days, nearly all the birds were infected with the same strain (fla type 1.9). However, at 46 days of age, a second strain (fla type 3.7) was detected in some of the birds. These birds were also located toward the rear of the house. In flock 2, infection was detected at 5 wk of age. This infection was once again first detected in birds located at the rear of the house. In this flock, only a single fla type (1.1) was isolated throughout. A survey of the broiler house relative to the location of first point of infection indicated the use of an entrance door unprotected by boot dips. However, securing this door during the second flock study did not prevent infection.  相似文献

The prostate gland of 11 normal dogs and five dogs with histological confirmed chronic lymphocytic or lymphoplasmocytic prostatitis were imaged with grey-scale and Doppler ultrasound. Three vessel types (prostatic artery, capsular artery and parenchymal artery) were identified with color Doppler and the resistive index and maximum and minimum velocities were measured with pulsed wave Doppler. No differences between normal dogs and dogs with prostatitis was identified in either grey-scale ultrasound or in any Doppler parameters measured. Regardless of histologic diagnosis, acepromazine (0.05 mg/kg IV) caused a significant decrease in capsular artery maximum and minimum velocities and prostatic artery resistive index. This study establishes normal Doppler ultrasound parameters for the intact male canine prostate gland. Additional studies are necessary to further evaluate the clinical utility of Doppler ultrasound in canine prostatic diseases.  相似文献

Although herpesviruses are known to contaminate the semen of several mammalian species, the occurrence of feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1) in semen of infected cats has not been reported. Our objectives in this study were to investigate the presence of FHV-1 DNA in seminal fluid and frozen-thawed spermatozoa from FHV-1 infected Pallas' cats (Otocolobus manul) and assess the functionality of their frozen-thawed spermatozoa in vitro. Over a 3-yr period, semen (n = 33 ejaculates) was collected periodically via electroejaculation from four Pallas' cats chronically infected with FHV-1. Spermic ejaculates were frozen by pelleting on dry ice and stored in liquid nitrogen. After thawing, sperm motility and acrosome status were assessed over time during in vitro culture. For vitro fertilization (IVF), viable domestic cat (Felis silvestris catus) oocytes were inseminated with frozen-thawed Pallas' cat spermatozoa and evaluated for embryo cleavage. For FHV-1 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis, DNA was extracted from seminal fluid, frozen-thawed spermatozoa, inseminated oocytes, heterologous IVF embryos, and conjunctival biopsies and analyzed for presence of a 322-base pair region of the FHV-1 thymidine kinase gene. Immediately post-thaw, sperm motility and percentage of intact acrosomes were decreased (P < 0.05) compared to fresh samples, and declined further (P < 0.05) during culture. However, all frozen-thawed IVF samples were capable of fertilizing domestic cat oocytes (overall, 46.1 +/- 6.0% cleavage). PCR analysis did not identify FHV-1 DNA in any reproductive sample despite the repeated detection of FHV-1 DNA in conjunctival biopsies. These results suggest that semen collected from Pallas' cats infected with FHV-1 does not contain cell-associated or non-cell-associated virus and that frozen-thawed spermatozoa exhibit adequate function for potential genetic rescue with minimal risk of FHV-1 transmission.  相似文献
