Three experiments are described on the effects on flowering of warm storage of narcissus bulbs before (and in some cases after) hot-water treatment (h.w.t.) against eelworm infection. Almost complete loss of the flower crop occurs if the bulbs are not warm stored, compared with the production of about 90% marketable flowers following warm storage. Optimum temperatures and durations of warm storage are not clearly defined; there is very little difference between the two recommended treatments, 34° C. for 3 days and 30° C. for 7 days, with the latter giving slightly better results. In another experiment, best results were obtained following 32·5° C. for 8 days or 35° C. for 5 days, with some varietal differences. These combinations were superior to most at 30° C., and to all of only 2 days duration. Higher temperatures and longer durations generally result in earlier flowering, with no adverse effect on flower quality. Bulb yield in the field following h.w.t. is higher when the bulbs are warm-stored before h.w.t. and, when forced in the following season, they give more flowers. Post-h.w.t. warm storage reduces flower quality and bulb yield in the field; although some minor benefits were observed, this treatment cannot be recommended. The possible mechanism for the protection afforded by warm storage is discussed.  相似文献

Alberta’s oil sands are located in the boreal forest where surface mining requires reconstruction of these landscapes using waste saline and sodic overburden (SSOB) piles. The impact of these SSOB materials, however, on root development of planted boreal species is unknown. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of SSOB material on the root distributions of planted boreal species. Root distributions for planted mixedwood stands were measured using soil cores and compared with soil physical and chemical properties on three reclaimed sites. Soil pH ranged from 6.1 to 7.5 across all three reclaimed sites. Sodium adsorption ratio ranged from <30 in the SSOB at the youngest site to <4 at the oldest site while soil electrical conductivity ranged from <12 and <4 dS m−1 in the SSOB at the youngest and oldest site, respectively. Root length distributions were concentrated in the upper 30 cm of the soil profile and ranged from 0.96 to 7.99 cm cm−3. The roots were observed in the SSOB and accounted for 1.3% to 2.2% of the total root length in the profile. The root length density was also negatively correlated with Na and EC at all sites. The root distributions on these young reclaimed sites were similar to those from undisturbed boreal forest stands overlying saline soils, suggesting that root distributions on these reclaimed sites appear to be unaffected by the SSOB; however, further monitoring will be required as the stand matures to determine future impacts of the SSOB on forest productivity.  相似文献

Cats in animal shelters are highly susceptible to infection by feline herpesvirus (FHV) by virtue of their stress and close proximity to other cats. Animal shelters take several different approaches to prevent FHV-related upper respiratory infections (URIs), including empirically treating all cats with L-lysine, a supplement believed to prevent the replication of FHV and, therefore, manifestations of herpesvirus infections. In this study we tested oral supplementation of L-lysine as a means to prevent URIs. One hundred and forty-four cats were treated with L-lysine in a small amount of canned food once daily. A 'no treatment' group of 147 cats received no lysine during the course of the study. The development of conjunctivitis or URI was tracked between the two groups. In all measures, there was no effect between the two groups, suggesting that lysine was not able to prevent URI or conjunctivitis in our shelter situation. Cats entering shelters encounter stressors that may make them more susceptible to FHV reactivation or infection. Infection control and control of fomite transmission are also key to keeping cats healthy in a group housing situation. The finding that lysine did not prevent URI in this animal shelter suggests that shelters may better use their resources by finding ways to decrease stress among their feline population, focusing on proper infection control measures, and limiting fomite transmission of disease.  相似文献

Over the past 20 years, conservation tillage has been used on the loess plateau of north‐west China to improve the sustainability of local agriculture. There had been particular concern about loss of soil organic matter associated with traditional tillage. We examined the influence of four tillage treatments: conventional tillage (CT), subsoiling tillage (SST), rotary tillage (RT) and no‐tillage (NT), with two straw residue management treatments (return and removal) on the distribution with soil depth (0–20 cm, 20–40 cm) of total organic carbon, labile organic carbon (KMnO4‐C) and bound organic carbon. The study was carried out on a Loutu soil (Earth‐cumuli‐Orthic Anthrosol) over seven consecutive years of a winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)–summer maize (Zea mays L.) crop rotation. By the end of this period, conservation tillage (SST, RT and NT) led to greater storage of soil organic carbon (SOC) (22.7, 14.9 and 16.3% with straw return in contrast to 21.4, 15.8 and 12.3% with no straw return, respectively) compared with CT in the surface soil (0–20 cm). The reduced tillage treatments (SST and RT) both increased significantly the highly labile organic carbon (HLOC) content of the surface soil (50% in both SST and RT) and mildly labile organic matter (MLOC) (49.4 in SST and 53.5% in RT) when straw was removed. The largest pool of bound carbon was observed in the Humin‐C pool, and the smallest in the free humic acids C (FHA‐C) in each tillage treatment. Conservation tillage led to an increased content of FHA‐C and CHA‐C. Results from correlation analyses indicate that SOC enrichment might have resulted from the increase in HLOC, MLOC, FHA‐C and CHA‐C over a short period. Labile organic carbon was associated with the organic carbon that was more loosely combined with clay (FHA‐C and CHA‐C). We conclude that both SST and RT are effective in maintaining or restoring organic matter in Loutu soils in this region, and the effect is greater when they are used in combination with straw return.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted over two successive years (2002 and 2003) to investigate the effects of grazing improved permanent pasture (mainly perennial ryegrass/white clover) by cattle or sheep, either sequentially or mixed, on the faecal egg counts and growth rates of weaned lambs when treated with anthelmintics. The grazing season was divided into two parts, May-July then July-October, relating to the pre- and post-weaning of the lambs. Four grazing regimes, replicated three times, were compared: (1) sheep only from May to October (SS); (2) cattle May to July followed by lambs until October (C/S); (3) cattle and sheep May to July followed by lambs until October (C+S/S); and (4) cattle and sheep May to July followed by cattle and lambs until October (C+S/C+S). Sward height was maintained at 6 cm using a "put and take" stocking system. At weaning, lambs were weighed and treated with an anthelmintic (0.08% ivermectin drench, Oramec) before being allocated to plots. They were then weighed and drenched every 28 days until the end of the experiment (Day 84). Faecal egg counts (FEC) were measured in all lambs immediately prior to each anthelmintic treatment. In 2002 and 2003, there were differences between the groups in FEC, with the SS lambs having the highest values and C/S lambs the lowest (P<0.01). There were also differences in the rate of liveweight gain of the lambs in each of the study years: for this parameter SS lambs had the lowest growth rate but the fastest growth was in C+S/C+S lambs not C/S lambs (P<0.01), indicating that these differences were due to factors other than parasite infection. Overall, sequential grazing of pastures with cattle then sheep reduced the faecal egg counts in lambs regularly treated with anthelmintics when compared with lambs grazing in mixed systems with cattle and sheep or with sheep only systems, however, the highest growth rates were observed in lambs in the mixed cattle/sheep grazing system throughout.  相似文献

Basidiospores are implicated in the distribution and genetic diversity of Ganoderma boninense, cause of basal stem rot (BSR) and upper stem rot (USR) of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis). Measurement of aerial basidiospores within plantations in Sumatra showed continuous and high production over 24 h (range c. 2–11 000 spores m?3) with maximum release during early evening. Basidiospores applied to cut surfaces of fronds, peduncles and stems germinated in situ. Equivalent, extensive wounds are created during plantation harvesting and management and represent potential sites for formation of infective heterokaryons following mating of haploid basidiospore germlings. Use of spore‐sized micro‐beads showed that basidiospores could be pulled up to 10 cm into severed xylem vessels, where they are relatively protected from dehydration, UV irradiation and competing microflora. Diversity of isolates from five locations on two plantations was assessed by RAMS fingerprinting. Isolates from within individual palms with USR were identical and represent single infections, but different USR infections had unique band patterns and revealed separate infections. Some BSR‐affected trees contained more than one isolate, and thus had multiple infections. There was one example of adjacent BSR palms with the same isolate, indicating vegetative spread, but there were no identical genets from BSR infections and adjacent fallen palms. Isolate diversity was as great within a plantation as between plantations. It is evident that basidiospores play a major role in spread and genetic variability of G. boninense. Evidence for direct basidiospore infection via cut fronds, indirectly through roots via colonized debris and less frequently, infection by vegetative, clonal spread is considered.  相似文献

Dermatomyositis is an inflammatory disease of the skin and muscle and is most commonly found in the Shetland sheepdog. Both the clinical presentation and the age of onset of dermatomyositis vary widely, and the inability to diagnose dermatomyositis before clinical symptoms ensue has made control of the disease difficult. Identification of a genetic marker that cosegregates with dermatomyositis would facilitate the development of a DNA-based test for the early detection of affected dogs. We report the use of linkage disequilibrium (LD) mapping to identify linkage to phenotypic dermatomyositis in the Shetland sheepdog. One marker, microsatellite marker FH3570 on canine chromosome 35, had evidence of LD (P=0.00002). Further studies are necessary to narrow the region harbouring the dermatomyositis locus, identify candidate genes and determine mode of inheritance.  相似文献

Entire reproductive tracts were removed from seven normal healthy heifers and qualitative unbiased estimates made of endometrial gland volume density and glandular surface density. After examining approximately 55 microscopic fields of endometrium from each tract, a mean glandular surface density value of 10.2 mm(2)/mm(3) (CE 3.1%) was obtained. The stereological method was then employed in optimising the design of the main study. The endometrial height was measured for 17 healthy cycling heifers and 19 similar cows. Subsequently, unbiased estimates were made of intercaruncular endometrial gland volume per unit surface for all cattle were investigated; differences between heifers and cows generally, and the possible effect of the follicular and luteal phases of the oestrous cycle were compared. The mean surface area of glands per unit area of endometrium at the intercaruncular site in heifers and cows was approximately 18 mm(2)/mm(2) in the follicular phase and 26 mm(2)/mm(2) in the luteal phase, figures similar to the gland area found in women. The intercaruncular gland volume increased significantly, by about 30% during the luteal phase of the bovine oestrous cycle in heifers, from 0.01 to 0.13 per mm(3). The differences in endometrial anatomy between site of sampling and either follicular or luteal phases of the oestrous cycle were always more significant in heifers than cows. The endometrial thickness in cows was always greater than for heifers, irrespective of the site of sampling. It was concluded that the intercaruncular endometrium of cattle was far more active physiologically than recognised previously.  相似文献
