Metam sodium is a potential replacement for methyl bromide, which is used to control soil pests. Metam sodium rapidly breaks down in the soil to form methylisothiocyanate (MITC). Dissipation of the herbicides EPTC and pebulate in a silt loam soil under plastic mulch in the absence and presence of metam sodium was examined in field experiments in 1998 and 1999 at Knoxville, Tennessee. EPTC half-life (DT(50)) was 9 d, but when applied in conjunction with metam sodium DT(50) increased to 22 d. Similarly, average pebulate DT(50) was 8 d and increased to 23 d when applied in conjunction with metam sodium. This increase in herbicide DT(50) with the addition of metam sodium is thought to be due to a reduction in soil microorganisms that degrade EPTC and pebulate. EPTC applied with metam sodium injured tomato plants and reduced total crop yield more than EPTC, pebulate, or pebulate with metam sodium. The increased tomato injury may have been related to the greater and prolonged activity of EPTC and slower EPTC dissipation in the presence of metam sodium or MITC.  相似文献

Enterococcus faecalis 710C, isolated from beef product, has a broad antimicrobial activity spectrum against foodborne pathogens. Two bacteriocins, enterocin 7A (Ent7A) and enterocin 7B (Ent7B), were purified from the culture supernatant of E. faecalis 710C and characterized using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry and electrospray infusion tandem mass spectrometry analyses. These data and subsequent genetic analysis showed that Ent7A and Ent7B are produced without N-terminal leader sequences and have amino acid sequences that are identical to those of enterocins MR10A and MR10B, respectively. However, the observed masses for Ent7A and Ent7B are 5200.80 and 5206.65 Da (monoisotopic mass), respectively, which are higher than the theoretical molecular masses of MR10A and MR10B, respectively. This study provides evidence that both Ent7A and Ent7B are formylated on the N-terminal methionine residue. Purified Ent7A and Ent7B are active against spoilage microorganisms and foodborne pathogens, including Clostridium sporogenes , Listeria monocytogenes , and Staphylococcus aureus as well as Brevundimonas diminuta , which has been associated with infections among immune-suppressed cancer patients.  相似文献

Objective To describe the postoperative complications and visual outcome after phacoemulsification in dogs and identify risk factors for complications. Animals studied One hundred and three dogs (179 eyes) that had phacoemulsification with or without intraocular lens (IOL) placement including foldable acrylic IOLs between March 2006 and March 2008 at Purdue University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Procedure Medical records were reviewed and occurrence and dates of postoperative complications were tabulated. Visual status at the final recheck during the study period was recorded. Additional information including signalment, diabetes mellitus status, operative complications and factors, presence of prior lens induced uveitis, preoperative retinopexy, and cataract stage was collected. Results The majority of eyes were functionally visual (148 eyes, 82.7%) at the end of the study period. Blindness was seen in 18 eyes (10.0%) with reduced vision in 13 eyes (7.3%) at the final recheck. Postoperative ocular hypertension (22.9%), corneal lipid opacity (19.0%), uveitis (16.2%), intraocular hemorrhage (12.3%), retinal detachment (8.4%), and glaucoma (6.7%) were the most common postoperative complications seen in eyes. The odds of blindness were significantly greater (OR = 290.44) in the eyes of Boston terriers compared with mixed breed dogs and with each year of increasing age (OR = 2.00). Conclusion The prognosis for vision after phacoemulsification with injectable IOL placement is good. Boston terriers were at much higher risk for certain complications.  相似文献

A long-term study in Angora goats experimentally infected with Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis: clinical disease, faecal culture and immunological studies. Vet. Microbiol. 113, 13-24], in the same experiments as the Holstein-Friesian cattle, have been described. Two longitudinal experiments involving Holstein-Friesian cattle challenged with either bovine or ovine strains of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map) have been conducted over a period of 54 and 35 months, respectively. Blood samples for the IFN-gamma test and the absorbed ELISA and faecal samples for bacteriological culture were taken pre-challenge and monthly post-challenge. Cell-mediated (CMI) responses were substantially higher for the bovine Map strain during the 42-month period following dosing but then declined in the remaining 12 months. However, for the ovine Map challenge and control groups, CMI responses were not significantly different from each other. None of the cattle developed clinical disease and only one of the cattle in the bovine Map gut mucosal tissue challenged group was a persistent faecal shedder and also an ELISA antibody responder which developed after shedding commenced. Culture of tissues, following necropsy at the completion of the experiments, showed no evidence of infection in any of the challenged cattle and sheep for either the bovine or ovine Map strain in contrast to positive cultures for challenged goats in the same experiments. The tissues from the control cattle, sheep and goats were culture negative. The cattle were less susceptible to the bovine and ovine Map strains than goats and sheep with the goats being the least naturally resistant.  相似文献

AIM: To investigate ovarian follicular and luteal activity during the postpartum period of cows genetically selected for high or low mature bodyweight, in relation to metabolic and reproductive endocrine parameters, to determine whether there are differences between strains that could affect fertility outcomes.

METHODS: The presence of follicles ≥5 mm diameter and luteal structures was mapped in the ovaries of 12 high (heavystrain) and 12 low (light-strain) mature bodyweight cows by daily trans-rectal ultrasonography from Day 7 postpartum until the end of their first normal oestrous cycle. Blood samples were collected daily, for measurement of concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), progesterone, growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and insulin. Intervals to first ovulation were calculated from ultrasonography data.

RESULTS: Heavy-strain cows had shorter intervals than light-strain cows from calving to the emergence of the first (9.0 (SE 0.9) vs 12.4 (SE 1.3) days) and second (16.4 (SE 1.8) vs 20.6 (SE 1.6) days) dominant follicles (p<0.05). Concentrations of FSH in heavy-strain cows prior to the emergence of the second, third and fourth dominant follicles were higher than in light-strain cows (p<0.05). Heavy-strain cows were more likely to have a large (>15 mm diameter) follicle earlier than light-strain cows (p<0.01). Concentrations of insulin and IGF-1, but not those of GH, were higher in heavy- than light-strain cows during the postpartum period (p=0.01 and p=0.02, respectively), and concentrations of both on Day 6 were inversely related to the time of emergence of the first dominant follicle (p>0.01).

Concentrations of progesterone were similar in both strains of cow until Day 10 of the first oestrous cycle, but thereafter were higher in light- than heavy-strain cows until Day 16. Progesterone concentrations in heavy-strain cows declined earlier and more rapidly than in their lighter counterparts.

CONCLUSION: These results indicate that there is a rapid postpartum resumption of follicular activity in both heavy-and light-strain cows, but that there is an earlier emergence of dominant follicles and ovulation in the former. Differences in luteal function, in terms of lower dioestrus progesterone concentrations and an earlier onset of luteolysis, in heavy- than light-strain cows might be sufficient to impair the fertility of the former.  相似文献
