Sentinel lymph node mapping and biopsy are important parts of oncologic staging in human medicine. Sentinel lymph node mapping enables identification of the first lymph node to receive lymphatic drainage while avoiding unnecessary lymph node dissection. Anal sac adenocarcinoma is the most common malignant neoplasm of the canine perineal area. For dogs with anal sac adenocarcinoma, lympadenectomy and metastasis to the iliosacral lymphocentrum are negative prognostics indicators. The objectives of this prospective, two by two, crossover pilot study were to establish the feasibility of lymphoscintigraphy using Technetium‐99 sulfur colloid of the canine anal sac of healthy dogs, compare two injection techniques, and the time for identification of sentinel lymph nodes using each technique. We hypothesized that both intramural and perimural injections of the canine anal sac would identify similar sentinel lymph node drainage. The sentinel lymph node was identified in all dogs using either technique. Intramural injection of the canine anal sac showed radiopharmaceutical uptake faster than perimural injection technique (P = 0.040). There was concordance between intramual and perimural techniques for the sentinel lymph node identified in 50% of cases. A sacral lymph node was identified as sentinel in three of eight dogs (37.5%). Lymphoscintigraphy of the canine anal sac is safe and feasible in normal dogs; however, the method of injection technique seems to have a significant effect on the sentinel lymph node identified. 相似文献

Primary abdominal visceral soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) are rare tumours in dogs with little information available on outcomes. The goal of this retrospective, multi‐institutional study was to describe the common tumour types, location and prognostic factors associated with primary abdominal visceral STSs. Medical records were searched for dogs with primary abdominal visceral STSs at six institutions and were retrospectively reviewed. Tumours were graded using the previously described grading scheme for STSs of the skin and subcutis when information in the histopathology report contained adequate details. Forty‐two dogs were included in the study. Five dogs had grade I tumours, 11 had grade II and 15 had grade III tumours. The most common tumour type was leiomyosarcoma (38.1%). The most common tumour locations were the spleen (47.6%) and small intestine (23.8%). The local recurrence rate was low (4.7%). Metastasis was present at the time of surgery in 23.8%, and the overall metastatic rate was 40.4%. Mitotic index of ≥9 was associated with significantly shorter survival time (MST 269 days) compared with a mitotic index of <9 (MST not reached). The MST for grade I STSs was not reached, was 589 days for grade II and 158 days for grade III. Dogs with grade III tumours were more likely to develop metastatic disease. Neither location of the primary tumour nor the histologic subtype was associated with survival time. Histologic grading of abdominal visceral STSs using the previously described scheme is prognostic and should be provided on histopathology reports. 相似文献

Groundwater drains used to manage saline watertables in the semi-arid zone of south-western Australia can discharge acidic
saline water with high concentrations of metals to waterways. Mitigating the acidity impacts of the waters requires sulfate-reducing
bioreactors capable of functioning under semi-arid conditions with limited source materials. Two simple pilot-scale bioreactor
designs using straw and sheep manure mixtures were evaluated over several years. The bioreactors increased pH from <3.5 to
>5.5 for 125–260 days, with concurrent evidence of sulfate reduction, >85% reductions in net acidity and >90% reductions in
Al and most trace elements (e.g. Pb, Cu, Ni, Zn, Ce and La). When outflow pH < 5.5 (remaining greater than inflows), reduction
in net acidity was 10–80% but concentrations of Pb, Cu and Ni remained >80% reduced over periods of 250 to >700 days. Rates
of alkalinity generation initially exceeded 10 g CaCO3/m2/day in both bioreactors thereafter decreasing to >1–2 CaCO3/m2/day. Al and Fe retention was implicated in trace metal removal when pH < 5.5, mediated by biological alkalinity generation.
High evaporation rates limited bioreactor function by restricting outflows with no benefits to alkalinity generation rates.
This experiment showed that simple bioreactors can neutralise acidic waters and remove metals for short durations and show
capacity for sustained reduction in acidity and metal concentrations over several years despite low alkalinity generation. 相似文献

Inflammatory airway disease has been linked to exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH), and consequently, we hypothesized that immunomodulation via concentrated equine serum (CES) treatment would reduce EIPH as evidenced by red blood cell (RBC) concentrations in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). Separate trials were conducted on Thoroughbred horses treated with either CES (n = 6) or placebo (0.9% saline; n = 4). All horses completed pre-treatment and post-treatment (2 and 4 weeks after initiating treatment) maximal exercise tests on a 10% inclined treadmill (1 m/s/min increments to fatigue) over a 10-week period (2−3 weeks between tests), with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) performed 30 minutes after exercise. Treatment ensued 10 days after the pre-treatment exercise test, with horses receiving a series of five CES or placebo injections 24 hours apart (20 mL intratracheal and 10 mL intravenously), with subsequent weekly injections for 5 weeks thereafter. After CES treatment, both EIPH (RBC in BALF) and inflammation (white blood cell concentration [WBC] in BALF) were significantly diminished by the 4-week posttreatment run, demonstrating 46 ± 12% and 24 ± 11% decreases, respectively (P < 0.05). In contrast, EIPH was elevated significantly at the 4-week time point, and inflammation remained constant in the placebo trial. In conclusion, these preliminary data suggest that therapeutic intervention involving immunomodulation may represent a viable approach to reducing the severity of EIPH. 相似文献
