Some species of the genus Erythrina have considerable potential as forage, but information on their nutritional value is scanty. The objective of the study was
to define groups of Erythrina provenances based on rumen degradation parameters for dry matter and nitrogen which would be useful in the selection of provenances
for detailed nutritional or tree improvement studies. Degradation parameters (i.e. soluble fraction (a), slowly degradable fraction (b), rate of degradation (c) and extent of degradation (a + b) were estimated for twenty Erythrina provenances belonging to seven species (E. abyssinica, E. bentipoeme, E. brucei, E. burana, E. melanacantha, E. poeppigiana and E. variegata)). The data were subjected to principal component and cluster analyses for grouping, and the 20 provenances were placed into
four distinct cluster groups. Provenances of E. brucei and E. abyssinica belonged to three clusters, whereas provenances of E. burana and E. variegata were confined to one cluster. Using extent of dry matter and nitrogen degradation values of 71 and 86% respectively, as a
forage quality index, members of clusters 1 and 2 (i.e. E. abyssinica, ILCA 10606; E. brucei, ILCA 10579, 10625, 10628, 10637, 10643; E. burana 10575, 10641, 12157; E. melanacantha ILCA 10574 and E. variegata ILCA 14991 and 14994), appeared to be superior in quality to their counterparts in clusters 3 and 4. In hatcheries, meagre Argyrosomus regius larvae still depend on an adequate supply of rotifers and Artemia, as no artificial diet can totally fulfil their nutritional requirements. However, production of live feed is highly expensive and demands intensive labour and specific facilities. This study investigated the effect of a dietary regime without the use of rotifers, to simplify the meagre larval rearing protocol. Two feeding treatments (T1 & T2) are compared to investigate their effects on survival and growth of meagre larvae. In T1, larvae were fed rotifers from 2 to 5 days post hatch (dph), and Artemia from 4 to 15 dph. In T2, larvae were kept under dark conditions and fed Artemia from 6 to 15 dph. Standard larval length (SL) was significantly higher in T1 (p < .01) until 8 dph in comparison with larvae reared initially without rotifers. No significant difference in SL was found among treatments (p = .187) at 15 dph. Significant difference was found among treatments in survival rate at 15 dph (p < .003). The survival rate observed at 15 dph in T2 (30 ± 4.2%) represents an important finding, although the highest survival rate was observed in T1 (45.0 ± 3.4%). This study showed that it is possible to conduct larval rearing of meagre without using rotifers. Nevertheless, further research efforts are still needed to improve these results in comparison with the common larval rearing protocol. 相似文献

This study was conducted in Ethiopia to determine the use of mobile phones in agriculture. The study included 320 household heads who owned mobile phones. Data were collected using an interview schedule. The results revealed that the majority (90.6%) of household heads made phone calls for agricultural purposes. Over three quarters (85.9%) of the household heads received phone calls related to agriculture. Short message service (SMS) was poorly used. It is concluded that mobile phones are playing an important role as an informational medium. Therefore, the Ministry of Agriculture in Ethiopia needs to develop a mobile-based agricultural information dissemination system to enhance information delivery to rural farming households. 相似文献

‘Orphan’ zoonotic diseases attract disproportionately low scientific and public health attention for the impact that they can have. This article pulls together information on their health burden in the UK from routine and enhanced data sources. These diseases are heterogeneous in nature; some have very low case numbers (e.g. hydatid disease), whilst others affect hundreds of patients each year (e.g. toxoplasmosis). The number of deaths attributed to orphan zoonoses is relatively low, and the majority recorded in this article were caused by toxoplasmosis. There is a clear issue of under‐reporting and under‐diagnosis in the data sets presented, and further work should be carried out to obtain more accurate estimates of the prevalence of zoonotic infections. Joint human and veterinary studies are especially important for these diseases. 相似文献

A study was carried out to determine the impact of Leptocybe invasa infestation on growth and biomass production of Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden and E. saligna Smith seedlings in Tanzania. Three- month old seedlings were infested with L. invasa. Twenty two weeks post infestation, heights of infested E. grandis seedlings were reduced by 39.6%, while diameters were reduced by 11.3% compared to uninfested seedlings. On the other hand, the heights of infested E. saligna seedlings were reduced by 38.2% and diameters were reduced 7.7% compared to uninfested seedlings. Dry weight biomass reduction of infested seedlings was significantly higher on stem and leaves than roots and branches of both E. grandis and E. saligna. The impact of L. invasa infestation on growth and biomass production was higher in E. grandis than E. saligna. Prevention and control of L. invasa infestation should be given priority. Similar future trials should examine other commercially grown Eucalyptus species in Tanzania. 相似文献

High performance fibers have distinguished properties such as high tensile strength, good thermal and chemical resistance, dimensional stability, lightweight, and high electrical conductivity. Due to these superior properties, high performance fibers made it to the scene of broad range of applications such as aerospace, automotive, windmill, fiber reinforced composites, high strength tethers, tendons for scientific balloon, tension structures, protective clothing, and marine. Examples of such fibers are Zylon®, Kevlar®, and Vectran®. However, the fibers lose their strength significantly upon exposure to Ultraviolet (UV) and visible light. In this research, UV protective films from extruded low density polyethylene (LDPE) loaded with different content of UV stabilizers (TiO2 nanoparticles and White PE CC®) were investigated. To assess the degree of UV blockage of each extruded protective film, their transmittance to UV and visible (UV-VIS) light was measured. Additionally, Zylon® braids were sheathed with the protective films and the strength of the braids and yarns raveled from braids was measured before and after UV exposure for different number of days. LDPE loaded with White PE CC® and 10 % TiO2 showed the least transmittance to UV-VIS and their yarns and braids exhibited highest strength retention after exposure to artificial UV. The present study was conducted to evaluate the adverse effects of an interaction between low levels of dietary aflatoxins
(AF) and Eimeria tenella infection on broiler chicks. A set of 1-day-old chicks were raised for 35 days in the following groups: a control group,
a group fed AF, a group fed AF and inoculated with E. tenella (AF + E.ten), and a group inoculated with E. tenella alone. AF in the contaminated diet were given at 200 ppb starting from the seventh day after hatching while E. tenella was inoculated at a dose of 5 × 104 sporulated oocysts per chick at the 14th day after hatching. Worsened performance traits and high mortality were all observed
in the treated birds, particularly the AF + E.ten group. Lesion scores and oocyst outputs were not different within groups. Chickens fed with AF had significantly increased
serum ALT and ALP activities as well as decreased albumin content. They also showed hepatomegaly, hepatocytic vacuolation
and necrosis, an atrophied bursa of Fabricius, and a thymus with tissue depletion. E. tenella-infected broilers displayed a significant reduction in packed cell volume, hemoglobin content and lymphocyte percentage,
and showed hemorrhagic typhlitis. The deficits in hepatic function and hematologic parameters as well as the gross pathological,
and histopathological changes, were more common and more severe in the group that was exposed to both aflatoxicosis and coccidiosis
than in the groups exposed to either treatment alone. Thus, the combination of aflatoxicosis and E. tenella infection may influence the course of coccidial infection due to additive effects. 相似文献

In 2009, a novel swine-origin H1N1 influenza A virus (S-OIV), antigenically and genetically divergent from seasonal H1N1, caused a flu pandemic in humans. Development of an effective vaccine to limit transmission of S-OIV in animal reservoir hosts and from reservoir hosts to humans and animals is necessary. In the present study, we constructed and evaluated a vectored vaccine expressing the H1 hemagglutinin of a recent S-OIV isolate using equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) as the delivery vehicle. Expression of the recombinant protein was demonstrated by immunofluorescence and western blotting and the in vitro growth properties of the modified live vector were found to be comparable to those of the parental virus. The EHV-1-H1 vaccine induced an influenza virus-specific antibody response when inoculated into mice by both the intranasal and subcutaneous routes. Upon challenge infection, protection of vaccinated mice could be demonstrated by reduction of clinical signs and faster virus clearance. Our study shows that an EHV-1-based influenza H1N1 vaccine may be a promising alternative for protection against S-OIV infection. 相似文献
