The aim of this retrospective, cross‐sectional, study was to evaluate clinical findings and outcomes for different ultrasonographic patterns of hepatic emphysema in dogs and cats. Dogs and cats with an ultrasonographic diagnosis of hepatic emphysema and a known outcome, from January 2010 to January 2018, were enrolled. The following data were recorded from medical and ultrasonographic records: ultrasonographic patterns of hepatic emphysema (parenchymal, portal venous, biliary), clinical signs, laboratory findings, and outcomes (favorable, poor). A total of 33 dogs and four cats met the inclusion criteria. Among these, 23 cases were classified as hepatic portal venous gas, 10 as parenchymal emphysema, and four as biliary emphysema. Clinical diagnosis categories were as follows: infection/sepsis (9), gastro‐intestinal disease (9), iatrogenic (9), trauma (5), and liver neoplasia (5). An increase in serum liver enzymes was significantly associated with parenchymal emphysema (P = .03). Other clinical and laboratory findings were not associated with the type of hepatic emphysema. Hepatic portal venous gas was mostly transient in patients with ultrasonographic follow‐up. The overall mortality was 40.5%. A significant difference was found between mortality by portal venous gas (21.7%) and mortality by parenchymal emphysema (90%) (P = .003). In conclusion, the ultrasonographic differentiation of hepatic emphysema between hepatic portal venous gas and parenchymal emphysema may be important for the prognosis of hepatic emphysema. The presence of parenchymal emphysema may be a poor prognostic indicator, while hepatic portal venous gas may be more benign. However, ultrasound findings should be carefully evaluated in the context of clinical findings.  相似文献

Different silk substrates in form of spun silk tops, nonwoven web, yarn, and fabric were coated with electrically conducting doped polypyrrole (PPy) by in situ oxidative polymerization from an aqueous solution of pyrrole (Py) at room temperature using FeCl3 as catalyst. PPy-coated silk materials were characterized by optical (OM) and scanning electron (SEM) microscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, and thermal analysis (DSC, TG). OM and SEM showed that PPy completely coated the surface of individual silk fibers and that the polymerization process occurred only at the fiber surface and not in the bulk. Dendrite-like aggregates of PPy adhered to the fiber surface, with the exception of the sample first polymerized in the form of tops and then spun into yarn using conventional industrial machines. FT-IR (ATR mode) showed a mixed spectral pattern with bands typical of silk and PPy overlapping over the entire wavenumbers range. DSC and TG showed that PPy-coated silk fibers attained a significantly higher thermal stability owing to the protective effect of the PPy layer against thermal degradation. The mechanical properties of silk fibers remained unchanged upon polymerization of Py. The different PPy-coated silk materials displayed excellent electrical properties. After exposition to atmospheric oxygen for two years a residual conductivity of 10–20 % was recorded. The conductivity decreased sharply under the conditions of domestic washing with water, while it remained essentially unchanged upon dry cleaning. Abrasion tests caused a limited increase of resistance. PPy-coated silk tops were successfully spun into yarn either pure or in blend with untreated silk fibers. The resulting yarns maintained good electrical properties.  相似文献

A new principle for measuring soil CO2 efflux at constant ambient concentration is introduced. The measuring principle relies on the continuous absorption of CO2 within the system to achieve a constant CO2 concentration inside the soil chamber at ambient level, thus balancing the amount of CO2 entering the soil chamber by diffusion from the soil. We report results that show reliable soil CO2 efflux measurements with the new system. The novel measuring principle does not disturb the natural gradient of CO2 within the soil, while allowing for continuous capture of the CO2 released from the soil. It therefore holds great potential for application in simultaneous measurements of soil CO2 efflux and its δ13C, since both variables show sensitivity to a distortion of the soil CO2 profile commonly found in conventional chamber techniques.  相似文献

The depletion of oxygen and the use of high energy cost electron acceptors for mineralisation processes are considered as one of the main reasons limiting degradation rates in aquatic organic-rich ecosystems. In this research the effect of two different biostimulation oxygen-releasing protocols were investigated using extracellular β-glucosidase activity rates. Organic-rich sediment and water was collected from the harbour of Genoa (Italy, North-Western Mediterranean) and oxygenation was generated either by positioning air tubes into the overlying water, or by placing oxygen release compounds (ORC) directly into the sediment, in laboratory microcosms. The increase in enzymatic activity was significant in the water compartment of the oxygenated microcosms (ANOVA, p<0.05) and greater for the ORC treatment. In particular, in the water, air tubes caused an increase in the β-glucosidase activity during the first 24 h (from 18.1 nmol l−1 h−1 (T=0, before the treatment) to 50.9 nmol l−1 h−1 (T=24 h)), while ORC induced a β-glucosidase activity increase over the whole period (from 12.4 nmol l−1 h−1 (T=0) to 63.7 nmol l−1 h−1 (T=60 d)) together with a reduction in carbohydrate (from 1.91 mg l−1 (T=0) to 0.76 mg l−1 (T=60 d)) and a sedimentary pH increase (from 8.04 (T=0) to 8.22 (T=60 d)). The response to ORC treatment in the overlying water was also evident in the potential carbohydrate turnover rate, decreasing from 0.86 h (T=0) to 0.06 h (T=60 d) and cell specific enzymatic activity, increasing from 3.8 (T=0) to 22.8 nmol l−1 h−1 cell−1 (T=60 d). A less marked change was observed in the sediment.This research shows that the supply of oxygen directly into the sediment rather than water aeration is a better way of naturally enhancing enzymatic degradation rates in organic-rich marine ecosystems. The marked effect observed in the water following the sediment treatment suggests the occurring of a close association of decomposition processes within water and sediment compartments.  相似文献

There is increasing use of networks in ecology and epidemiology, but still relatively little application in phytopathology. Networks are sets of elements (nodes) connected in various ways by links (edges). Network analysis aims to understand system dynamics and outcomes in relation to network characteristics. Many existing natural, social, and technological networks have been shown to have small-world (local connectivity with short-cuts) and scale-free (presence of super-connected nodes) properties. In this review, we discuss how network concepts can be applied in plant pathology from the molecular to the landscape and global level. Wherever disease spread occurs not just because of passive/natural dispersion but also due to artificial movements, it makes sense to superimpose realistic models of the trade in plants on spatially explicit models of epidemic development. We provide an example of an emerging pathosystem (Phytophthora ramorum) where a theoretical network approach has proven particularly fruitful in analyzing the spread of disease in the UK plant trade. These studies can help in assessing the future threat posed by similar emerging pathogens. Networks have much potential in plant epidemiology and should become part of the standard curriculum.  相似文献

The onset of planet formation in protoplanetary disks is marked by the growth and crystallization of sub-micrometer-sized dust grains accompanied by dust settling toward the disk mid-plane. Here, we present infrared spectra of disks around brown dwarfs and brown dwarf candidates. We show that all three processes occur in such cool disks in a way similar or identical to that in disks around low- and intermediate-mass stars. These results indicate that the onset of planet formation extends to disks around brown dwarfs, suggesting that planet formation is a robust process occurring in most young circumstellar disks.  相似文献
