In order to investigate the pathogenesis of neosporosis following a primary infection in late pregnancy, cattle were subcutaneously challenged with 5 × 108Neospora caninum (NC1 isolate) tachyzoites at day 210 of gestation and serial necropsies were then carried out at 14, 28, 42 and 56 days post-infection (dpi). No abortions occurred and all the foetuses were viable at the time of euthanasia. There was a high rate of vertical transmission, as parasites were detected by immunohistochemical labelling and PCR in all the foetuses from 28 dpi. Focal necrotic lesions were observed in the placentomes of the placenta from 28 dpi and showed resolution during later time points, denoted by infiltration of inflammatory cells at 42 dpi and fibrosis at 56 dpi. Foetuses at 28 and 42 dpi showed scarce and isolated lesions which are unlikely to represent a threat to foetal viability. No lesions were observed in the foetuses at 14 or 56 dpi suggesting control of the infection and resolution of the lesions by maternal and foetal immune responses. Once infection was established, it could not be cleared from the host and vertical transmission of the parasite occurred in all infected hosts. Parasite was detected in the placenta at 28 dpi, while in previous experimental infections of cattle at day 70 and 140 of gestation using the same challenge model, it was already present at day 14 post infection. This suggests that a change in the maternal immune response plays a crucial role in limiting the initial infection during the last term of pregnancy.  相似文献

Tuberculosis in goats, mainly caused by Mycobacterium bovis and M. caprae, is a zoonotic disease with implications for public health, as well as having an economic impact due to decreased goat production, increased mortality rates and costs of diagnosis. There is an increasing need for surveillance of tuberculosis-infected goat herds, particularly in countries that are not officially free of bovine tuberculosis, and goats sharing farms with cattle should be subjected to the official tuberculin test. In Spain, some regions have programmes for the control of tuberculosis in goats, applying the same diagnostic assays that are used for cattle. The objective of tuberculosis eradication in livestock requires adaptation of existing control strategies to include goats. As such, it is necessary to determine whether current diagnostic assays for tuberculosis in cattle will work as efficiently in the goat. This review provides an overview of current in vivo tools for diagnosis of caprine tuberculosis, including estimates of the sensitivity and specificity of tests performed in this species. The number of tested animals and co-infection with Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis are also addressed, with the aim of demonstrating the limitations of current assays and the need for further research.  相似文献

Juniperus thurifera L. is an endemic conifer of the western Mediterranean Basin where it is subjected to a severe climatic stress characterized by low winter temperatures and summer drought. Given the trend of increased warming-induced drought stress in this area and the climatic sensitivity of this species, we expect a negative impact of climate change on growth and ecophysiological performance of J. thurifera in the harsh environments where it dominates. To evaluate this, we measured long- and short-term radial growth using dendrochronology, photosynthesis and water-use efficiency in males, females and juveniles in three sites in Central Spain. Climate was monitored and completed with historical records. Mean annual temperature has increased +0.2?°C per decade in the study area, and the main warming trends corresponded to spring (+0.2?°C per decade) and summer (+0.3?°C per decade). Radial growth and maximum photosynthesis peaked in spring and autumn. Positive photosynthetic rates were maintained all year long, albeit at reduced rates in winter and summer. Radial growth was enhanced by wet conditions in the previous autumn and by warm springs and high precipitation in summer of the year of tree-ring formation. Cloud cover during the summer increased growth, while cloudy winters led to impaired carbon gain and reduced growth in the long term. We argue that maintenance of carbon gain under harsh conditions (low winter temperatures and dry summer months) and plastic xylogenesis underlie J. thurifera's ability to profit from changing climatic conditions such as earlier spring onset and erratic summer rainfall. Our results highlight that not only the magnitude but also the sign of the impact of climate change on growth and persistence of Mediterranean trees is species specific.  相似文献

Summary European cattle breeds are being introduced into Ethiopia in an effort to improve the productivity of indigenous breeds. The Ethiopian cattle breeds Horro and Boran were compared for tick burdens with their crosses with Friesian, Jersey and Simmental. Horro animals had the lowest tick burdens and the Horro × Friesian the highest. Adaptation to their environment and long-term natural selection for tick resistance in Horro cattle is the most likely explanation.Repeatability of tick burdens in all animals considered as one herd were only statistically significant forBoophilus decoloratus, the most abundant tick species. Statistically significant correlations between burdens of femaleB. decoloratus, Amblyomma cohaerens andRhipicephalus praetextatus were observed and the addition of the males resulted in all inter-species correlations becoming significant.Care should be taken when crossing Ethiopian with more productive European cattle breeds in order not to lower their tick and disease resistance.
Resistencia En Diferentes Razas De Ganado Vacuno A Garrapatas (ACARI: Ixodidae) En Bako Ethiopia
Resumen Ganado de raza europea estan siendo introducidos en Etiopia en un esfuerzo de mejorar la produccion de las razas indigenas. Las razas etiopes Horro y Boran fueron comparadas por sus cargas de garrapatas con sus cruzas con Friesian, Jersey y Simmental. El ganado Horro mostró las cargas mas bajas y las cruzas con Friesian las mas altas. La adaptacion al medio ambiente y la seleccion a largo plazo de este tipo de ganado es la explicacion mas probable de los resultados.La repitabilidad de las cargas de garrapatas en todos los animales agrupados en un rebaño fueron estadistícamente significativas paraB. decoloratus, la garrapata mas abundante. Correlaciones estadísticamente significativas entre las cargas de hembras deBoophilus decoloratus, Amblyomma cohaerens y Rhipicephalus praetextatus fueron observadas y la adicion de los machos resulto en que todas las correlaciones entre especies se volvieron significativas.Se debe tener cuidado cuando las razas de ganado etiopes se cruzan con las mas productivas razas europeas para no reducir su resistencia a las garrapatas y enfermedades.

Resistance De L'hote Aux Tiques (ACARI: Ixodidae) Chez Differentes Races De Betail A Bako, Ethiopie
Résumé Des races bovines européennes sont actuellement introduites en Éthiopie dans le but d'accroître la productivité des races indigènes. Ainsi, les races Horro et Boran ont été comparées du point de vue du taux d'infestation par les tiques avec les produits de levi croisement avec les races Frisonne, Jersiaise et Simmenthal. Les animaux de race Horro avaient le taux d'infestation le plus bas et le croisement Horro × Frisonne le taux le plus elevé. L'explication la plus vraisemblable de ces résultats est l'adaptation du bétail Horro à son environnement en meme temps qu'une sélection naturelle de longue date à la résistance aux tiques. La répétabilité de la pression ixodienne chez tous les animaux considérés comme formant un troupeau unique, n'a été statistiquement significative que pourBoophilus decoloratus, espèce la plus abondante. Les auteurs ont observé des corrélations statistiquement significatives entre les taux de charge relatifs aux femelles deBoophilus decoloratus, Amblyomma cohaerens etRhipicephalus praetextatus. La prise en compte des mâles a eu pour effet de rendre significative toutes les corrélations inter-espèces. Il faut donc prendre des précautions lors de croisement du bétail éthiopien avec des races européennes plus productives afin de ne pas diminuer leur résistance aux tiques et aux maladies.

BACKGROUND: The activity of the major digestive cysteine proteinase detected in the intestinal tract of larvae of the bean weevil, Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say), was efficiently inhibited by the well-characterized cysteine proteinase synthetic inhibitor E-64 and also by a recombinant form of chagasin (r-chagasin), a tight-binding cysteine proteinase inhibitor protein from Trypanosoma cruzi. RESULTS: Incorporation of r-chagasin into an artificial diet system at 0.1 g kg(-1) retarded growth rate, decreased larval survival and led to complete mortality of A. obtectus at the end of the trial. The observed differences in growth rates occurred particularly in the first and second development stages. Artificial seeds containing high levels of r-chagasin (0.5-30 g kg(-1)) completely inhibited larval penetration. CONCLUSION: Together, the results reported in this paper support the hypothesis that the inhibitory activity of r-chagasin towards the major insect gut cysteine proteinase in vitro and in vivo is an accurate prediction of its insecticidal effects. The selectivity of this inhibitor against insect digestive proteinases supports the key role in parasite virulence by affecting the endogenous proteinase activity in its natural host.  相似文献

Contrasting responses of Eucalyptus trees to K fertilizer applications have been reported on soils with low K contents. A complete randomized block experiment was set up in Brazil to test the hypothesis that large atmospheric deposits of NaCl in coastal regions might lead to a partial substitution of K by Na in Eucalyptus physiology and enhance tree growth. Treatments with application of 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 kmol K ha−1 (K1.5, K3.0, K4.5, respectively) as KCl, 3.0 kmol K ha−1 applied as K2SO4, 3.0 kmol Na ha−1 (Na3.0) as NaCl commercialized for cattle feeding, and a mixture of 1.5 kmol K + 1.5 kmol Na ha−1 (K1.5 + Na1.5) were compared to a control treatment (C) with no K and Na applications. All the plots were fertilized with large amounts of the other nutrients.  相似文献

Leaf rust(LR) and stripe rust(YR) are important diseases in wheat producing areas worldwide and cause severe yield losses under favorable environmental conditions when susceptible varieties are grown. We determined the genetic basis of resistance to LR and YR in variety Borlaug 100 by developing and phenotyping a population of 198 F6 recombinant inbred lines derived from a cross with the susceptible parent Apav#1. LR and YR phenotyping were conducted for 4 and 3 seasons, respectively, at CIMMYT research stations in Mexico under artificial epidemics. Mendelian segregation analyses indicated that 3–5 LR and 2 YR genes conferred resistance in Borlaug 100. Lr46/Yr29(1 BL), Yr17(2 AS) and Yr30(3 BS) were present in the resistant parent and segregated in the RIL population based on characterization by molecular markers linked to these genes. When present alone, Lr46/Yr29 caused average 13% and 16% reductions in LR and YR severities, respectively, in RILs. Similarly, Yr17 and Yr30 reduced YR severities by 57% and 11%, respectively. The Yr30 and the Yr17 translocation were also associated with 27% and 14% reductions, respectively, in LR severity, indicating that the 3 BS and 2 AS chromosomal regions likely carry new slow rusting LR resistance genes, temporarily designated as Lr B1 and Lr B2, respectively. Additive effects of Yr30*Yr17, Yr29*Yr17 and Yr29*Yr30 on YR and LR were significant and reduced YR severities by 56%,55%, and 45%, respectively, and LR severities by 34%, 40%, and 45%, respectively. Furthermore, interaction between the three genes was also significant, with mean reductions of 70% for YR and 54% for LR severities. Borlaug 100, or any one of the 21 lines with variable agronomic traits but carrying all three colocated resistance loci, can be used as resistance sources in wheat breeding programs.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the protein quality of organic and genetically modified soy by feeding specific diets to rats. Three groups of Wistar rats (n = 10) were used, and each group was named according to the food that they ate. There was an organic soy group (OG), a genetically modified soy group (GG), and a control group (CG). All animals received water and diet ad libitum for 455 days. At the end of this period, the weight of the GG group was the same as that of the OG, and both were higher than CG. Protein intake was similar for the OG and GG, which were significantly lower (p < 0.0005) than the CG. The growth rate (GR) of the rats, albumin levels, and total levels of serum protein were comparable for all groups. Hematocrit (p < 0.04) and hemoglobin (p < 0.03) for the OG and GG were less than the CG. Although the OG and GG demonstrated reduced hematocrit and hemoglobin, both types of soy were utilized in a way similar to casein. This result suggests that the protein quality of soy is parallel to the standard protein casein in terms of growth promotion but not hematological indicators.  相似文献
