Twenty-nine of 200 (14.5%) ewes on a farm in Cobleskill, NY aborted or had dead lambs during the lambing seasons of 1985 and 1986. Thirteen of 15 ewes that aborted had high Toxoplasma gondii antibody titers (1,024), via the modified agglutination test, and T gondii was isolated from the tissues of 1 fetus. In the 1987 lambing season, 5 ewes aborted, but not because of T gondii infection. Toxoplasma gondii antibodies were detected in 73.8% of sera obtained from 592 ewes in January 1987, indicating enzootic toxoplasmosis on this farm. Seropositivity increased with age; 40.2% of 1-year-old ewes had detectable antibody vs 89.2% of 2-year-old ewes.  相似文献

The passage of non-Toxoplasma antibodies from dam to fetus through damaged placenta was studied in sheep inoculated with Toxoplasma gondii. Six ewes were inoculated with chicken globulins and Leptospira bacterins 2 months before oral inoculation with Toxoplasma gondii oocysts. Ewes were euthanatized between 42 and 62 days after T gondii inoculation. Antibody titers against chicken globulins, Leptospira spp, Haemonchus contortus, Sarcocystis spp, and T gondii were measured in the maternal and fetal sera. All ewes became infected with T gondii and had grossly visible necrotic foci in the placentas, and T gondii antibodies were found in the fetuses and the ewes. Appreciable amounts of antibodies to Haemonchus contortus, Sarcocystis sp, Leptospira spp, and chicken globulins did not cross the placental barrier. Seemingly, serologic examination of the fetus was reliable for the diagnosis of ovine congential toxoplasmosis.  相似文献

The life cycle of Paragonimus kellicotti was studied in dogs fed 25 or 50 metacercariae obtained from the hearts of naturally infected crayfish. Young flukes excysted in the intestines and appeared in the peritoneal cavity within 7–14 days after inoculation (DAI) and in the pleural cavity from 7 to 43 DAI. Immature flukes penetrated the pulmonary parenchyma between 7 and 10 DAI and became sexually mature between 28 and 35 DAI. Virtually all growth of the flukes occurred in the lungs. Eggs first appeared in feces 30 DAI. Pulmonary lesions were caused by the penetration and growth of flukes and the lesions were first detected by thoracic radiography 3 weeks after inoculation. Clinical signs were generally mild and consisted of an intermittent cough. Two dogs died suddenly of pneumothorax due to the rupture of cysts 32 and 35 DAI, respectively.  相似文献

The effect of fenbendazole therapy was studied in 9 dogs with pulmonary paragonimiasis induced by inoculation of metacercariae (25/dog) of Paragonimus kellicotti. At 42 to 47 days after 6 dogs were inoculated, they were given fenbendazole in 2 divided doses totaling 50 mg (4 dogs) or 100 mg (2 dogs)/kg of body weight each day for 10 to 14 days. Three dogs were not treated. The passage of Paragonimus eggs in the feces ceased after 3 days at the high dosage and after 3 to 8 days at the low dosage. All dogs were euthanatized and necropsied on day 14. Live flukes were not recovered from the lungs of any treated dog, but 15, 19, and 23 live flukes were recovered from the untreated dogs.  相似文献

Sera collected from 507 hunter-killed wild pigs (Sus scrofa) between 1993 and 2004 from five geographic regions in northern Spain and seven regions in southern Spain were assayed for antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii by the modified agglutination test (MAT). Antibodies to T. gondii were detected in 185 (38.4%) of 507 pigs with titers of 1:25 in 71, 1:50 in 111 and > or =1:500 in 3; seroprevalence was significantly higher (P<0.05) in pigs from southern regions. Seroprevalence was density dependent; it was higher in pigs from high stocking per hectare and availability of forage. Statistically significant differences were not observed between T. gondii seroprevalence and hunting estates (open versus fenced), sex or age. Serological results indicate a widespread exposure to T. gondii among Spanish wild boars, suggesting that this population could represent a public health risk for persons that handle or consume raw or undercooked infected wild pig meat.  相似文献

Attempts were made to isolate Neospora caninum from naturally infected white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). A total of 110 deer killed during the 2003 hunting season in Virginia region were used for the isolation of N. caninum. Of these, brains from 28 deer that had NAT titer of 1:200 were inoculated into interferon-gamma gene knock out (KO) mice. N. caninum was isolated from the tissues of three deer and all three isolates were mildly virulent to KO mice. Only one of the isolates could be adapted to in vitro growth. Protozoa in the tissues of KO mice reacted with N. caninum-specific polyclonal antibodies and N. caninum DNA was demonstrated in infected tissues by PCR assays; sequences of portions of the ITS-1 and gene 5 loci were identical to those in the public database. This is the first record of in vitro isolation of N. caninum from white-tailed deer and lends credence to the white-tailed deer as an intermediate host for this parasite.  相似文献

Several species of free-living amoebae can cause encephalomyelitis in animals and humans. Disseminated acanthamoebiasis was diagnosed in pyogranulomatous lesions in brain, thyroid, pancreas, heart, lymph nodes, and kidney of a one-year-old dog. Acanthamoeba sp. was identified in canine tissues by conventional histology, by immunofluorescence, by cultivation of the parasite from the brain of the dog that had been stored at -70 degrees C for two months, and by PCR. The sequence obtained from the PCR product from the amoeba from the dog was compared to other sequences in the Acanthamoeba sp. ribosomal DNA database and was determined to be genotype T1, associated with other isolates of Acanthamoeba obtained from granulomatous amebic encephalitis infections in humans.  相似文献
