To test the acidifying ability of the distal portion of the nephrons in healthy dogs, 0.2 g of NH4Cl/kg of body weight was given PO. Samples for venous blood gas analysis and urine pH were taken hourly for 6 hours. Systemic acidemia developed, as evidenced by a statistically significant (P less than 0.05) decrease in blood pH 1 hour after NH4Cl administration. Four hours after administration, mean urine pH decreased to a low of 5.16 +/- 0.1 and was less than 5.5 3 hours after administration. Changes in urine pH 2 hours after administration were statistically significant (P less than 0.05). In human beings, NH4Cl loading is used to detect patients with distal renal tubular acidosis (defective hydrogen ion secretion by the distal nephrons) and normal acid/base values. Distal renal tubular acidosis is diagnosed if urine pH fails to decrease to less than 5.5 after NH4Cl administration. On the basis of the findings of this study, a similar value would be valid for dogs. 相似文献

The developing embryo/fetus bears antigens which are foreign to the mother and it could be expected that immune rejection of the conceptus would occur. One of the reasons why the fetus is not rejected is because a depression of the maternal immune response takes place during pregnancy. Serum from pregnant animals of several species has been shown to contain a factor, early pregnancy factor (EPF), which is immunosuppressive. Average daily core body temperature and behavioural patterns of pregnant mares were studied, in search of definitive signs of parturition within 24 h of the event. Nineteen pony mares were sampled twice daily for core body temperature. A significant temperature drop, averaging 0.1 degrees C (0.2 degrees F) was observed during the day prior to parturition. Between 18.00 h and 06.00 h, during the two weeks before parturition, Thoroughbred and Standardbred mares (n = 52) spent an average 66.8 per cent of their time standing, 27.0 per cent eating, 4.9 per cent lying in sternal recumbency, 1.0 per cent lying in lateral recumbency, and 0.3 per cent walking. On the night before parturition, mares spent significantly less time lying in sternal recumbency than on previous nights and on the night of parturition all behaviour patterns except eating were significantly different from the nights of the two weeks before parturition. There was an increase in walking (5.3 per cent), lying in sternal recumbency (8 per cent) and lying in lateral recumbency (5.3 per cent) whereas standing (53.3 per cent) was decreased. In 58 observed pregnancies, 54 mares (97 per cent) foaled in a recumbent position and 50 mares (86 per cent) foaled between 18.00 h and 06.00 h. 相似文献

Latent infection by Botrytis cinerea was frequently detected in young Primula × polyantha (horticultural hybrid polyanthus) plants. Genetically marked isolates were used to demonstrate that conidial inocula applied to young plants generally did not result in disease appearing on the leaves until plants flowered, regardless of when plants were inoculated. The severity of disease was proportional to the length of each day spent at 100% relative humidity during the latent period, regardless of time or form of inoculum. Plants with a prior B. cinerea infection were more susceptible to further infection and also showed symptoms of B. cinerea infection more quickly. An eleven‐year‐old, female spayed Boxer dog was diagnosed with a uveal schwannoma (formerly known as the spindle cell tumor of the blue‐eyed dog or SCTBED) despite having a uniformly brown iris. The patient presented to emergency for ocular discomfort, and the right globe was subsequently enucleated due to glaucoma and submitted for histopathology. Upon histopathologic evaluation, a uveal schwannoma was diagnosed and confirmed with immunohistochemical staining. Complete metastatic evaluation 1 and 6 months after initial presentation did not reveal evidence of metastasis, and the dog remains systemically healthy. This case represents a unique variant of uveal schwannoma and is relevant because although the vast majority of these tumors occur in blue‐eyed dogs, clinicians should not completely rule out this tumor as a differential based on the iris color. 相似文献

Measurements of primary, regular and irregular secondary dentine and pulp dimensions were made on transverse, sub-occlusal and mid-tooth sections, of 40 maxillary and 42 mandibular control equine cheek teeth (CT) of different ages. Maxillary and mandibular CT primary dentine in different age groups had a mean thickness of 922–1065 μm and 1099–1179 μm, respectively, on the lateral aspects, and 1574–2035 μm and 1155–1330 μm, respectively, on the medial aspects of pulp horns. Surprisingly, some increase in thickness was found in some mandibular CT primary enamel in the first few years following eruption.Regular secondary dentine thickness increased with age, for example at mid-tooth level in mandibular CT from 124 μm at 3 years dental age to 290 μm at >7 years dental age on the lateral aspect of pulp horns, and from 166 μm to 509 μm on the medial aspects of pulp horns, indicating a deposition rate of 0.5–10 μm/day. This type of dentine was thicker sub-occlusally than in the mid-tooth region. Maxillary dentinal dimensions showed a similar age-related increase in thickness. Maxillary CT dentine was significantly thicker (72% in primary, 43% in regular secondary dentine) on the medial compared to the lateral aspects of pulp horns, but mandibular CT dentine was just 15% and 14% thicker in primary and regular secondary dentine thickness, respectively, on the their medial as compared to their lateral aspects. Dentinal and pulp dimensions varied between individual pulp horns, Triadan tooth position, and dental age, with complex interactions between these variables for some parameters. 相似文献
