The use of a stress-wave timer as a minimally destructive device for detecting decay or defect in living trees was evaluated.
Measurements were conducted on five tree species (Picea jezoensis, P.glehnii, Betula platyphylla var.japonica, Abies sachalinensis, andLarix kaempferi) with or without decay. Except in sap-rottedA. sachalinensis, the apparent stress-wave velocity in most decayed trees was considerably lower than the value obtained from healthy trees.
Our results showed that defect or decay in the trees was detectable more effectively by the method used in the field survey,
although the device occasionally failed to detect decay that was incipient, of small extent or confined to sapwood. Other

In 2004, Corynesopra cassiicola was isolated from dark brown spots on leaves and fruits and from black blights on stems of sweet pepper plants in Kochi Prefecture,

A 22-month-old male Japanese mongrel cat with a history of dysuria and recurrent generalised tonic-clonic seizure was examined by neuro-opthalmological testing and computed tomography (CT). Vision testing revealed narrowing of the visual field in the right eye, and complete visual deficits in the left eye. Pupillary reactions, and motor and sensory function in the eyelids and the eyes were normal. The cat was diagnosed as hydrocephalus by CT examination, because dilation of the right lateral ventricle, and compression of the right temporal and occipital cortices was shown. The etiology of the hydrocephalus was unclear. Although a unilateral lesion of the upper visual pathway was suspected, a complete homonymous hemianopsia was not shown. 相似文献

In teleosts, a considerable part of the body calcium is found in the scales. Associated with the scales are osteoblasts and osteoclasts, and during periods of high calcium demand such as during sexual maturation or starvation, the scales can be resorbed and thereby act as an internal calcium reservoir. In mammalian bone tissue, the activity of an acid phosphatase (ACP) isoenzyme, tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRACP), can be used as a marker for osteoclastic activity. In the present study, an evaluation of TRACP as a marker for osteoclastic activity in teleost scales has been performed. ACP and TRACP was histologically localized at resorption sites around the edge of the scales as well as at resorption holes in the scales. The optimal conditions for biochemical measurements of ACP and TRACP activity were found to be pH 5.3, 10 mM paranitrophenylphosphate, incubated for 30 min at room temperature, and 10 mM tartrate added when required. Using TRACP as a marker, estradiol-17 (E2) was found to increase the proportion of scales being resorbed, as well as the number and size of resorption sites per scale. Also, the scales of E2-treated fish showed weaker staining for calcium. Together, the obtained data indicate that estradiol-17 induces osteoclastic activity in teleost scales, resulting in increased resorption of the scales. A period of refeeding following a period of starvation did not have detectable effects on the scale osteoclastic activity and scale resorption. 相似文献
