Use of pulsatile intravenous administration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone to induce fertile estrus in bitches

The pulsatile IV administration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) was evaluated as a method to induce fertile estrus in 8 anestrous Beagle bitches. Bitches received 1.25 micrograms of GnRH every 90 minutes for 11 to 13 days. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone was delivered by use of an automatic pump. Reproductive history was known for all bitches, 4 of which, on the basis of 3 or 4 preceding cycles, had an interestrous interval of 219 +/- 14 days (mean +/- SEM). Estrus induction was attempted during early anestrus in 6 bitches (ie, 148 +/- 10 days since the preceding estrus) and late anestrus in 1 bitch (ie, 260 days since the preceding estrus); another bitch had not had an estrous cycle for nearly 2 years before GnRH administration. Signs of estrus were seen within 16 days after the start of GnRH administration in the bitches with regular estrous cycles (group 1, n = 7), and within 23 days in the bitch (group 2) with prolonged anestrus. All bitches were bred, and 7 of 8 (87.5%) became pregnant, with a mean litter size of 4.5 +/- 0.75. A normal hormonal response pattern was observed in group-1 bitches--a peak increase in plasma estrogen concentration of 22.3 +/- 2 pg/ml immediately before the onset of estrus. Peak plasma progesterone concentration (17.3 +/- 3 ng/ml) was observed 1 to 14 days after the onset of diestrus in the group-1 bitches that ovulated, and adequate plasma progesterone concentration was maintained throughout gestation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

In a case of megakaryoblastic leukemia in a dog, definitive diagnosis was made through use of specific cytochemical stains of circulating and bone marrow blast cells. Use of adrenocorticotropin challenges to indicate chronic stress responses of laying hens in several housing alternatives

The use of adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) challenges was tested as an indicator of the level of physiological stress response of laying hens in several housing alternatives. Single Comb White Leghorn (SCWL) hens were challenged with intravenous ACTH injections (either .33, 1.0 or 3.0 IU/kg body weight). Plasma corticosterone (CORT) concentrations taken at intervals from 10 to 180 min following ACTH challenges revealed CORT response curves which peaked within 30 min at 34-, 54- and 60-fold increases over pre-challenge CORT levels with doses of .33, 1.0 and 3.0 IU/kg ACTH, respectively. Peak CORT levels for 1.0 and 3.0 IU/kg of ACTH did not differ; however, CORT levels for 1.0 IU/kg ACTH were significantly elevated above the peak for .33 IU/kg ACTH. Laying hens housed in cage and floor management alternatives were challenged with .33 and 1.0 IU/kg of ACTH after 10 months of lay. Cage management treatments were 3, 4 or 5 hens per cage and floor treatments with hens kept at 2 densities. Significant differences in the ACTH-induced CORT response between management alternatives could be detected following injection of .33 IU/kg ACTH, but not with the higher ACTH dose (1.0 IU/kg). These studies demonstrated that the CORT response to the lower dose of ACTH seemed to be more effective in assessing management differences, but further clarification may be necessary before ACTH challenges can be accurately used to evaluate physiological stress responses of laying hens housed in different conditions.  相似文献

Assessment of the value of the vertebral heart scale in the radiographic diagnosis of cardiac disease in dogs

In order to assess the influence of the vertebral heart scale (VHS) on the accuracy of the radiographic diagnosis of cardiac disease, thoracic radiographs of 50 dogs with proven cardiac disease, 26 with other thoracic diseases, and 50 with no clinical signs of cardiovascular or respiratory disease were mixed and examined by three independent, blinded observers chosen to represent a range of radiographic abilities. They first examined all the radiographs without making measurements of VHS and made a diagnosis. They then re-examined the radiographs, and measured VHS on both lateral and dorsoventral or ventrodorsal radiographs before again recording a diagnosis without reference to their original diagnoses. For all the observers, the dogs with cardiac disease had a higher mean VHS than the normal dogs. A VHS over 10.7 on the lateral radiograph was a moderately accurate sign of cardiac disease. The observers' accuracy of diagnosis did not change significantly as a result of using VHS as an adjunct to a subjective assessment of the radiographs.  相似文献
