Globally, the prevalence of chronic, noncommunicable diseases is increasing at an alarming rate and diabetes is one of them. If diabetes is not controlled then a lot of complication like coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy arise in diabetic patients and causes morbidity and/or mortality. Diabetes is increasing at an epidemic form and in near future the largest increases will take place in the regions dominated by developing economies. So, it will be a great social and economical burden to developing countries as well as the developed. But if we be aware about our diet and lifestyle and take proper medication we may prevent and reduce the prevalence of diabetes. Oral medicine plays an important role in management of diabetes. But most of the oral drugs are costly and have a lot of side effects. For this it is also necessary to take medicines with fewer or no side effects. And antidiabetic medicinal plants may play an important role in this case. In this article we have tried to describe how diet and lifestyle with using medicinal plants may help to prevent or maintain diabetes and help to reduce the mortality and morbidity due to diabetes or complication related to it.  相似文献

Abstract

Enhancing rice yield is a great challenge for rice growers in the tidal flooded ecosystem, where poor agronomic management is one of the major constrains. Improve management practice (IMP) was compared with traditional farmers’ practice (TFP) in evaluating rice productivity, nutrient uptake, translocation and farm income in tidal flooded ecosystem. Results revealed that, IMP significantly produced higher number of panicles m?2, more grain panicle?1 and better grain filling. The rice cultivars produced 2.0 to 2.5 t grain ha?1 with TFP, while 3.0 to 4.0 t ha?1 with IMP. In different rice cultivars, the grain yield in IMP increased 12 to 60% over TFP. Similarly, the grains in IMP treatment absorbed 21.41 to 57.03?kg N ha?1 whereas only 15.85 to 46.94?kg N ha?1 in TFP plot. However, higher nitrogen (N) transfer from shoot to grain in IMP also suggests that the amount of N in soil was too low to meet the plant demand in TFP. Although, the IMP involved additional cost, but it gave significantly higher gross return (438 to 954?US$ha?1) and margin (397 to 913?US$ha?1) which added farm income upto 225?US$ha?1 over TFP. Hence, it could be concluded that IMP is a potential option for increasing grain yield and farm income during aman season in the tidal flooded ecosystem.  相似文献

The high cost of conventional, water‐soluble phosphorus (P) fertilizers limits their use by resource‐poor farmers in sub‐Saharan Africa. Phosphate rocks are a low‐cost alternative. We evaluated the effectiveness and residual effects of Egyptian phosphate rock (EPR) and Togo phosphate rock (TPR) relative to triple superphosphate (TSP) applied at 0, 20, 40, 80, and 160 kg P ha‐1 to annual Trifolium species grown in a P‐deficient Vertisol. The fertilizers were applied once and their effects were followed on seven consecutive annual clover crops. Clover responded to P at all the rates used. Significant (P<0.05) responses to P at the low 20–40 kg P ha‐1 rates were registered up to the fifth crop after application of P, and responses to higher rates of 80–160 kg P ha‐1 were significant up to the seventh crop. Critical evaluation of residual effects by comparing the response of clover to these fertilizers with response to fresh applications of TSP in the second and third crops confirmed these observations. Over all the seven crops, EPR was 82% as effective as TSP in increasing clover DM and 83% as effective in increasing P uptake. Its substitution rates were 67% for DM yields and 69% for P uptake. For TPR, the relative responses were 54% and 52% for DM yield and P uptake, respectively, and the corresponding substitution rates were 29% and 27%. In separate experiments, the effects of mixing these phosphate rocks with triple superphosphate (TSP) in various proportions (at 60 kg P ha‐1) were also investigated. The highest response of clover was observed with TSP applied alone, but the phosphate rocks applied alone also significantly increased yields compared with the controls without applied P. Mixtures of TPR and TSP increased yields only slightly over pure TPR, and mixtures of EPR and TSP had no effect on yields compared with pure EPR, presumably because EPR is more reactive than TPR. It was concluded that EPR is highly effective in these soils, but the effectiveness of TPR is low. The highly reactive EPR could be used to elevate the P status of the P‐deficient Vertisols and increase feed availability and livestock productivity in the Ethiopian highlands. Mixing of these phosphate rocks with TSP cannot be recommended.  相似文献

The combined seeding and cropping of non-leguminous and leguminous cover crops during the cold fallow season is recommended as an important agronomic practice to improve total biomass productivity and soil fertility in mono-rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivation system. However, application of plant residues as green manure can increase methane (CH4) emission during rice cultivation and affect rice quality and productivity, but its effects are not well examined. In this field study, the mixture of barley (Hordeum vulgare R.) and hairy vetch (Vicia villosa R., hereafter, vetch) seeds with 75 % recommended dose (RD 140 kg ha?1) and 25 % RD (90 kg ha?1), respectively, were seeded after rice harvesting in late November, 2010, and harvested before rice transplanting in early June 2011. Total aboveground biomass was 36 Mg ha?1 (fresh weight basis with 68 % moisture content), which was composed with 12 Mg ha?1 of barley and 24 Mg ha?1 of vetch. In order to determine the optimum recycling ratio of biomass application that can minimize CH4 emission without affecting rice productivity, different recycling ratios of 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 % of the total harvested biomass were incorporated as green manure 1 week before rice transplanting in a typical temperate paddy soil. The same rates of chemical fertilizers (N–P2O5–K2O?=?90–45–58 kg ha?1) were applied in all treatments. Daily mean CH4 emission rates and total CH4 fluxes were significantly (p?<?0.05) increased with increasing application rates of cover crop biomass. Rice productivity also significantly (p?<?0.05) increased with biomass application, but the highest grain yield (53 % increase over the control) was observed for 25 % recycling. However, grain quality significantly (p?<?0.05) decreased with increasing cover crop application rates above 25 % recycling ratio, mainly due to extended vegetative growth periods of rice plants. Total CH4 flux per unit grain yield, an indicator used to simultaneously compare CH4 emission impact with rice production, was not statistically different between 25 % biomass recycling ratio and the control but significantly increased with increasing application rates. Conclusively, the biomass recycling ratio at 25 % of combined barley and vetch cover crops as green manure might be suitable to sustain rice productivity without increasing CH4 emission impact in mono-rice cultivation system.  相似文献

The successful outcome of an insemination is a combination of both male and female fertility‐linked factors. We investigated the first service conception rate of cows at artificial insemination (AI) in the smallholder dairy farms in Bangladesh. Frozen straws were prepared from ejaculates of Bos indicus (n = 7) and Bos indicus × Bos taurus (n = 7) AI bulls. Fertility was determined from 6101 first services in cows that were performed by 18 technicians in four regions between April 2004 and March 2005. Pregnancy was diagnosed by rectal palpation between 60 and 90 days post‐insemination. The Asian version of Artificial Insemination Database Application (AIDA ASIA) was used for bulls‐, cows‐ and AI‐related data recording, and later retrieved for analysis. The mean ± SD number of inseminations performed from individual bulls and their conception rates were 436.0 ± 21.6 and 50.7 ± 1.9%, respectively. Logistic regression demonstrated body condition scores (BCS), heat detection signs, months of AI and their interactions had greatest effects (odds ratios: 1.24–16.65, p < 0.04–0.001) on first service conception rate in cows. Fertility differed (p < 0.02–0.001) between the regions, previous calving months, months of AI, BCS, parity and heat detection signs of cows. Inseminations based on mounting activity (n = 2352), genital discharge (n = 3263) and restlessness and/or other signs (n = 486) yielded a conception rate of 53.6%, 48.8% and 50.1%, respectively (p < 0.05). Conception rate between technicians ranged between 43.4% and 58.6% (p < 0.05). The days interval from calving to first service (overall mean ± SD = 153.4 ± 80.6) had relationship (p < 0.001) with BCS, months of previous calving and parity of the cows. Fertility at AI in smallholder farms can be improved by training farmers on nutrition and reproductive management of the cows.  相似文献

Abstract

A study of simulated rat damage was done to determine the loss of wheat yield when O (control). 10, 30 and 50% ot the wheat stems were cut at tillering, booting, dough and mature crop stages. The yields at harvest from each of 128 1‐m2 plots were compared by analysis of variance and least significant difference tests. Yield at the tillering stages was not significantly different from the controls but yields at all other stages differed significantly. Yield losses in tillering and booting stages were not significant for the different damage levels except for 50% stem cutting at the booting stage. The yields from dough and mature crop stages at all damage levels were significantly lower than yields from controls. No significant differences in yield at all growth stages were observed between control plots and those receiving 10% damage, but 30 and 50% damage gave significant losses.  相似文献

Farming of the striped catfish, Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, is a major aquaculture activity in Bangladesh, particularly in the district of Mymensingh. However, pangasius farm management practices and the socio‐economic impacts of pangasius farming systems in Mymensingh have not yet been adequately described in the literature. This article provides an overview of the present status and characteristics of pangasius culture in Bangladesh based on data from a study conducted in Mymensingh district during 2009. The mean productivity of pangasius was 36.9 MT ha?1, where 87.9% of the farms produced between 15 and 65 MT ha?1 of pangasius, with an additional 10–20% Indian major and Chinese carps and Nile tilapia. Pangasius aquaculture in Bangladesh has improved the economic and social status of a variety of stakeholders in communities where the fish is farmed.  相似文献

Seaweed has a great potential to be used as an important ingredient in food processing, as it contains a significant content of soluble polysaccharides and has a potential function as a dietary fiber. In this study, seaweed powder (Kappaphycus alvarezii) was incorporated (2–10%) with wheat flour for the production of muffins. The effect of seaweed composite flour on the quality of muffins was investigated using various techniques, such as texture profile and proximate analyses, as well as sensory evaluation. Modification of the muffin formulation to include seaweed powder improved the composition of ash, crude fiber, and moisture content, while the protein and carbohydrate levels decreased, compared to the control sample. An increase in the seaweed component reduced the muffin height, volume, and specific volume. According to the experimental texture profile analysis data, the seaweed affected the textural characteristics of the muffins, increasing the hardness and decreasing the springiness. Sensory evaluation revealed that seaweed powder could be used in the muffin formulation up to 6%, without significantly impacting the color, aroma, and taste attributes relative to the control sample. For overall acceptability, however, the panelists preferred muffins without seaweed powder.  相似文献

Kaempferia angustifolia is an aromatic, essential oil-yielding plant of the Zingiberaceae family with an ethno-medicinal repute. We standardized an effective system for micropropagation of K. angustifolia, and this is probably the very first report of in vitro culture of this species. Axillary buds were cultured on a Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with various concentrations and combinations of plant growth regulators (PGRs) and spermidine. Highest multiplication occurred when the MS medium was supplemented with a combination of 2.0 mg L?1 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP), 2.0 mg L?1 kinetin (KIN) and 1.0 mg L?1 α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). Addition of spermidine (2.0 mM) along with optimum PGRs had further improved the multiplication rate with a maximum of 6.6 ± 0.36 shoots per explant within 60 days of implantation. The number of multiplied shoots per explant increased with each subsequent regeneration cycle; and the shoots per explant increased from 6.6 ± 0.36 on the 1st regeneration cycle to 10.3 ± 0.42 on the 2nd regeneration cycle and further increased to 13.7 ± 0.37 on the 3rd regeneration cycle on the same medium composition. The best result for in vitro root induction of multiplied shoot was achieved on a half-strength MS medium fortified with 2.0 mg L?1 IBA, with a maximum of 18.5 ± 0.28 roots per shoot. Regenerated plantlets were acclimatized with 88.9 % survival rate. After 9 months of field-transfer, all these plants were harvested and rhizomes were collected. However, the present protocol can definitely be applied for large-scale propagation and commercial cultivation of K. angustifolia.  相似文献
