Beer induced the response of the ionotropic gamma-aminobutyric acid receptors (GABA(A) receptors) expressed in Xenopus oocytes, indicating the presence of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-like activity. Furthermore, the pentane extract of the beer, hop (Humulus lupulus L.) oil, and myrcenol potentiated the GABA(A) receptor response elicited by GABA. The GABA(A) receptor responses were also potentiated by the addition of aliphatic esters, most of which are reported to be present in beer flavor. Aliphatic esters showed the tendency to decrease in the potentiation of the GABA(A) receptor response with an increase in their carbon chain length. When myrcenol was injected to mice prior to intraperitoneal administration of pentobarbital, the pentobarbital-induced sleeping time of mice increased additionally. Therefore, the beer contained not only GABA-like activity but also the modulator(s) of the GABA(A) receptor response. 相似文献

To investigate whether supplementation with iodine-reduced kelp (Laminaria japonica) powder decreases body fat composition in overweight Japanese subjects, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled intervention study was conducted in 50 Japanese subjects with body mass index (BMI) ≥25 and <30 kg/m2. Subjects were randomly assigned to consume thirty tablets/d (10 tablets orally, 3 times/d) containing either iodine-reduced kelp powder (test, 6 g kelp powder corresponding to 3 g alginate/d) or kelp-free powder (placebo) for 8 weeks. Anthropometric measurements, blood lipids, and serum thyroid hormone levels were obtained before and after the trial. Body fat percentage was significantly decreased in male subjects from the test group compared with the placebo group. The same tendency was observed for body weight (p = 0.065) and BMI (p = 0.072) in male subjects. No significant changes in anthropometric measurements or visceral fat area were observed in female subjects. Serum thyroid hormone concentrations did not increase after 1.03 mg/d of iodine supplementation through kelp intake. The intake of iodine-reduced kelp powder led to significant and safe reductions in body fat percentage in overweight male subjects. The consumption of kelp high in alginate may contribute to preventing obesity without influencing thyroid function in Japanese subjects with a relatively high intake of iodine from seaweed. 相似文献

Reversible decrease in CO2 fixation has been reported in rice plants exposed to low concentrations of SO2 (Matsuoka et al., 1969). Alpha hydroxy sulfonate is thought to form in leaves by an addition-reaction between plant aldehyde and SO2, and to inhibit the process of the photosynthesis. However, the identification of this compound in the leaves has not been successful. This report deals with the results of the radiochemical experiments to examine the occurrence of glyoxylate bisulfite, a-hydroxy sulfonate forms of glyoxylic acid in rice plant leaves exposed to radioactive sulfur dioxide. In plants exposed to SO2, sufficient amounts of glyoxylate bisulfite could be formed and thereby inhibit the progress of the path from glicolic to glyoxylic acid. 相似文献

1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity of Japanese whiskey after various aging periods in oak barrels was measured to evaluate the antioxidative effects of whiskey. The activity of the whiskey increased with the aging period with high correlation. The activity of various types of whiskey was measured and shown to be correlated to the potentiation of the GABAA receptor response measured in a previous paper. However, the fragrant compounds in the whiskey which potentiated the GABAA receptor response had low DPPH radical scavenging activity, while phenol derivatives had high radical scavenging activity. The whiskey was extracted by pentane. The aqueous part showed the scavenging activity, whereas the pentane part did not. Thus, both the DPPH radical scavenging activity and the potentiation of the GABAA receptor response increased during whiskey aging in oak barrels, but were due to different components. The whiskey protected the H2O2-induced death of E. coli more than ethanol at the same concentration as that of the whiskey. The changes that occurred in the whiskey during aging may be the reason aged whiskies are so highly valued. 相似文献

Recent climatic changes have enhanced plant growth in northern mid-latitudes and high latitudes. However, a comprehensive analysis of the impact of global climatic changes on vegetation productivity has not before been expressed in the context of variable limiting factors to plant growth. We present a global investigation of vegetation responses to climatic changes by analyzing 18 years (1982 to 1999) of both climatic data and satellite observations of vegetation activity. Our results indicate that global changes in climate have eased several critical climatic constraints to plant growth, such that net primary production increased 6% (3.4 petagrams of carbon over 18 years) globally. The largest increase was in tropical ecosystems. Amazon rain forests accounted for 42% of the global increase in net primary production, owing mainly to decreased cloud cover and the resulting increase in solar radiation. 相似文献

This paper presents the levels of available amounts of zinc, copper, and molybdenum as measured by Asp. niger (Mulder strain) in soils of Japan with special regard to their threshold values. Results obtained are as follow: 1) Levels of available zinc in soils examined ranged from 0.4 to 27 ppm. The threshold value for available zinc is adequelty represented as a function of the soil pH value, and was estimated to be around “0.5 × (soil pH value)-0.5” ppm (soil pH value >1). 2) Levels of available copper in soils examined ranged from 0.3 to 5 ppm, and the threshold value for available copper lies near 0.5 ppm. However, the value is more suitably represented as a function of the soil carbon content. This value was shown to be around “0.1 × (carbon % in the soil)” ppm. 3) Levels of available molybdenum in soils examined ranged from 0.01 to 0.13 ppm with the average about 0.10 ppm. The threshold value for available molybdenum is well expressed as a function of the soil pH. The value was estimated to be around “-0.04 × (soil pH value)+0.30” ppm (soil pH value <7.5). 相似文献
