Fungi from the soil of public areas in La Plata, Argentina were isolated and evaluated for their biological interaction with Toxocara canis eggs in vitro. We isolated and identified two fungal species: Fusarium pallidoroseum and Mucor hiemalis. Each species was co-cultured with T. canis eggs in sterile distilled water. The samples were observed by light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at days 4, 7 and 14 post-inoculation. Under the conditions of our experiments, F. pallidoroseum exhibited a high ovicidal activity on T. canis eggs, whereas M. hiemalis exhibited no such effects. 相似文献

Identifying the genetic variants that increase the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in humans has been a formidable challenge. Adopting a genome-wide association strategy, we genotyped 1161 Finnish T2D cases and 1174 Finnish normal glucose-tolerant (NGT) controls with >315,000 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and imputed genotypes for an additional >2 million autosomal SNPs. We carried out association analysis with these SNPs to identify genetic variants that predispose to T2D, compared our T2D association results with the results of two similar studies, and genotyped 80 SNPs in an additional 1215 Finnish T2D cases and 1258 Finnish NGT controls. We identify T2D-associated variants in an intergenic region of chromosome 11p12, contribute to the identification of T2D-associated variants near the genes IGF2BP2 and CDKAL1 and the region of CDKN2A and CDKN2B, and confirm that variants near TCF7L2, SLC30A8, HHEX, FTO, PPARG, and KCNJ11 are associated with T2D risk. Many carnivores require large ranges to meet their ecological and energetic needs; however, anthropogenic changes threaten species and their habitats. Camera traps have been used to effectively collect data on carnivores in a variety of habitat types; however, a single survey effort is typically limited to species that have similar body size, habitat use and movement patterns, and individual identification of animals is not always possible. We evaluated whether scat detection dogs could effectively survey for 4 wide‐ranging felids that vary in these characteristics: jaguars (Panthera onca), pumas (Puma concolor), ocelots (Leopardus pardalis) and oncillas (Leopardus tigrinus). From June to October 2009 and May to August 2011, a detection dog‐handler team detected 588 scats, from which 176 unique genotypes were detected. We assigned sex to 84.7% of the genotyped scats and identified 55 individuals multiple times. The effectiveness of these noninvasive techniques (detection dogs and genetic analyses of scat) not only opens the door for additional studies in areas that were previously difficult or impossible with standard survey techniques, but also provides conservationists with a set of tools that overcome some of the limitations associated with the use of camera traps alone. 相似文献

Supplementing diets with l-Arginine (Arg) improves female reproductive performance and reproductive blood flow in other species. The objectives of this study were to investigate uterine artery blood flow changes before and after parturition, and evaluate blood flow in Arg supplemented and control mares by Doppler ultrasonography. Sixteen light-horse mares began Doppler ultrasonography evaluation, 21 days before expected foaling date (EFD) and continued until day 7 postparturition. The mares under treatment (n = 8) were supplemented with 100 g Arg, once daily, beginning with 21 days before EFD. Blood flow measurements were calculated as pulsatility index (PI) and resistance index (RI) for both uterine arteries, either ipsilateral or contralateral; to uterine horn of established pregnancy; defined gravid uterine artery (GUA) and non-gravid uterine artery (NGUA), respectively. The mares under treatment had a shorter gestation length (337 ± 1.7 days) as compared to control (345 ± 2.1 days; P ≤ .05). No differences in gestation length were observed between groups when examined by age, parity, EFD, or sex of foal. Both GUA and NGUA uterine artery diameter decreased from the day before parturition to day 7 after parturition (P ≤ .001). During this time period, both PI and RI increased (P ≤ .01); indicating less blood flow. A treatment effect was observed with Arginine-treated mares having greater blood flow prepartum in the NGUA (P ≤ .001) and postpartum in the GUA (P ≤ .05), for both indices. Understanding how comets work--what drives their activity--is crucial to the use of comets in studying the early solar system. EPOXI (Extrasolar Planet Observation and Deep Impact Extended Investigation) flew past comet 103P/Hartley 2, one with an unusually small but very active nucleus, taking both images and spectra. Unlike large, relatively inactive nuclei, this nucleus is outgassing primarily because of CO(2), which drags chunks of ice out of the nucleus. The use of participatory methods has become increasingly popular in agricultural research and development and natural resource management. A range of approaches are being used at the grassroots level in order to involve local citizens and groups in projects. Many of these activities remain peripheral and isolated from conventional development agencies and policies. However, recent efforts are evolving to link participatory approaches into wider planning and policy-making processes and to increase the influence of such methods in resource management initiatives. Median survival times (STs) for doxorubicin‐treated canine lymphoma range from 5.7 to 9 months. Because dogs treated with multi‐agent protocols have longer STs, we sought to evaluate whether adding cyclophosphamide would improve outcome in canine lymphoma patients while maintaining an acceptable level of toxicity. Thirty‐two dogs with stage III–V multicentric lymphoma were treated with doxorubicin every 3 weeks for five total cycles and prednisone at a tapering dose for the first 4 weeks. Dogs were randomized to receive either cyclophosphamide or placebo concurrently. Seventeen dogs received doxorubicin and placebo, while 15 dogs received doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide. Response, toxicity, progression‐free interval (PFI) and ST were evaluated. The combination of doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide was well tolerated, causing no increase in adverse events over doxorubicin alone. Despite a numeric improvement in outcome in cyclophosphamide treated dogs, the addition of cyclophosphamide did not result in statistically improved response rate, PFI or ST. 相似文献
