Background: Sheep is important in the socio-economic lives of people around the world. It is estimated that more than half of our once common livestock breeds are now endangered. Since genetic characterization of Nigerian sheep is still lacking, we analyzed ten morphological traits on 402 animals and 15 microsatellite DNA markers in 384 animals of the 4 Nigerian sheep breeds to better understand genetic diversity for breeding management and germplasm conservation. Results: Morphological traits of Uda and Balami were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than Yankasa, which were both higher than West African Dwarf (WAD) sheep. Stepwise discriminant analysis showed tail length, rump height, chest girth, ear length and chest depth as the most discriminating variables for classification. Mahalanobis distances show the least differentiation between Uda and Balami and the largest between WAD and Balami sheep. While 93.3% of WAD sheep were correctly assigned to their source genetic group, 63.9% of Yankasa, 61.2% of Balami and 45.2% of Uda were classified correctly by nearest neighbour discriminant analysis. The overall high Polymorphism Information Content (PIC) of all microsatellite markers ranged from 0.751 to 0.927 supporting their use in genetic characterization. Expected heterozygosity was high for all loci (0.783 to 0.93). Mean heterozygote deficiency across all populations (0.171 to 0.534) possibly indicate significant inbreeding (P < 0.05). Mean values for FST , FIT and FIS statistics across all loci were 0.088, 0.394 and 0.336 respectively. Yankasa and Balami are the most closely related breeds (DA = 0.184) while WAD and Balami are the farthest apart breeds (DA = 0.665), which is coincident with distance based on morphological analysis and population structure assessed by STRUCTURE. Conclusions: These results suggest that within-breed genetic variation in Nigerian sheep is higher than between-breeds and may be a valuable tool for genetic improvement and conservation. The higher genetic variability in Yankasa suggests the presence of unique ancestral alleles reflecting the presence of certain functional genes which may result in better adaptability in more agro-ecological zones of Nigeria. One of the threats in the diversity loss of the primary gene pool of Vanilla planifolia is the lack of information on existing level of polymorphism in cultivated germplasm, and the different expressions of this polymorphism. For this reason, it is proposed to study the chemical polymorphism of the four phytochemicals that define the vanilla aroma quality in fruits (vanillin, vanillic acid, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, p-hydroxybenzoic acid) by HPLC analysis (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) of 25 collections of unknown genotype, grown in the region Totonacapan Puebla-Veracruz, Mexico. The results identified a selection process, domestication in fruit aroma of vanilla, during which increased the participation of vanillin and reduced the presence of three minor compounds (vanillic acid, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde and p-hydroxybenzoic acid) in the global aroma. We distinguished a total of six chemotypes of V. planifolia in the Totonacapan region, some chemotypes with wild aromatic characteristics (low participation of vanillin) related to the material less cultivated in the region and domesticated chemotypes with high participation of vanillin, for the most cultivated material. The results show that the diversification of the chemotypes of V. planifolia is not related to environmental variation. The data indicate that in the possible center of origin of vanilla, there is phytochemical polymorphism, which indirectly suggests the existence of genetic polymorphism, essential for the design of a breeding program for optimizing the use and conservation of diversity of the primary gene pool of Vanilla planifolia. 相似文献

The inclusion of peas (Pisum sativum L.) as the source of protein in the diet of growing rats brings about a reduction in growth rate as well as the impairment in the liver, muscle and spleen weights as compared with casein fed controls. Also, a fall in plasma glucose, triglycerides and protein was observed in the legume fed animals, while no changes in cholesterol levels were found. Furthermore, the rats fed on the diet containing peas showed lower levels of plasma insulin, corticosterone, IGF-I and T4 as compared with casein controls. Liver and muscle total protein (mg) and total DNA (mg) were markedly decreased in the legume fed animals, but DNA/g, protein/DNA and RNA/protein ratios were similar in both dietary groups. Likewise, liver and muscle fractional synthesis rates were similar in the casein and legume groups, while the whole body protein synthesis is assumed to be lower in the legume fed animals due to differences in body weights. It is concluded that animals fed on a diet containing peas (Pisum sativum L.) as the only source of protein showed less adverse effects than those found with other legumes such asVicia faba L. orPhaseolus vulgaris L., in which protein quality, antinutritional factors and nutrient availability could be involved. 相似文献

Wild Arachis germplasm includes potential forage species, such as the rhizomatous Arachis glabrata and the stoloniferous A. pinto and A. repens. Commercial cultivars of A. pintoi have already been released in Australia and in several Latin American countries, and most of these cultivars were derived from a single accession of A. pintoi (GK 12787). Arachis repens is less productive as a forage plant than is A. pintoi. However, it can be crossed with A. pintoi, and thus has good potential as germplasm for the improvement of A. pintoi. Arachis repens is also used as an ornamental plant and ground cover. Many new accessions of these two stoloniferous species are now available, and they harbor significant genetic variability beyond that available in the few older accessions, previously available. Therefore, these new accessions need to be conserved, documented and considered in terms of their potential for crop improvement and direct commercial use. Sixty-four accessions of this new germplasm were analyzed using RAPD analysis. Most of the accessions of A. repens grouped together into a clearly distinct group. In general, the accessions from the distinct valleys of the Jequitinhonha, São Francisco and Paranã rivers did not group together, suggesting there is not a tight relation between dispersion by rivers and the geographic distribution of genetic variation in these species. 相似文献

One of the current challenges of global fish farming is developing plant‐based proteins as a feasible substitute for fishmeal in the formulation of aquafeeds. Substitution levels of fishmeal with hydrolyzed soybean meal (HSM) in diets for silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) were evaluated for growth, protein metabolism and antioxidant activity. The experiment was carried out in a recirculation system of 20 tanks of 250 L. A total of 300 silver catfish juveniles were used to compose five treatments and four replicates per treatment. Levels of soybean hydrolysate (0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%) were tested in diets (39% protein and 3,500 Kcal) for 60 days. Silver catfish growth was higher at all inclusion levels of HSM when compared to the control diet. No change was shown for body protein deposition. The production of nitrogenous compounds in the liver and muscle was also unaffected by any of the diets. The diet containing 20% HSM promoted an increase in the amounts of non‐protein thiols in the gills and brain. The HSM substitution levels of up to 20% of fishmeal in the diet increases growth and contributes to silver catfish antioxidant activity. 相似文献

This research was focused on the lipid fraction of an undervalued crustacean (lobster krill; Munida spp.) and the comparative study of individuals captured at winter and summer seasons. For this purpose, seasonal variations were analyzed in the muscle (i.e., tail meat) for proximate composition, lipid class distribution, and fatty acid (FA) profile. Mean total lipids ranged from 0.75 ± 0.08% (summer) to 0.92 ± 0.06% (winter), moisture from 77.94 ± 0.25% (winter) to 78.62 ± 0.38% (summer), and protein from 17.93 ± 0.46% (summer) to 18.22 ± 0.46% (winter). Regarding lipid class content (% of total lipids), phospholipids ranged from 64.85 ± 1.29 (summer) to 67.85 ± 2.56 (winter), sterols from 12.15 ± 0.35 (winter) to 13.54 ± 0.54 (summer), triacylglycerols from 0.04 ± 0.02 (summer) to 1.25 ± 0.88 (winter), and free FA from 1.14 ± 0.72 (winter) to 2.19 ± 0.34 (summer). In both seasons, the most abundant FA were C22:6ω3, C16:0, C18:1ω9, and C20:5ω3. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were found to be the most abundant group in samples from both seasons (50.4–55.3%). Higher PUFA values were determined in summer samples, while a highly valuable ω3/ω6 ratio (from 9.11 ± 1.12 in summer to 10.40 ± 1.39 in winter) was observed. Recently, the eastern region of the Maranhão state (Northeastern Brazil) became a hotspot of land-use change (LUC) directly from native vegetation to soybean cultivation, but due to the soil characteristics, LUC has caused substantial soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen depletion. Therefore, we quantified these impacts arising from two factors: (i) different timeframes after LUC and (ii) contrasting soil management practices. For the first study, soil samples (0–30 cm; six replicates) were taken on soybean fields year one, year eight and 15 years after LUC. It the second study, another area was sampled, of which part was managed under no-tillage (NT) and the other using a mouldboard plough (MP). For both studies, native vegetation (NV) was sampled as the control. NV stored about 50 Mg of carbon (C) ha−1; but LUC reduced C stocks by 35% (after 8 and 15 years); moreover, labile-C decreased between 20% and 45%, while, microbial-C decreased between 20% and 60%, considering the interval between year one and 15 years. Regarding soil management, the MP did not cause differences on C stock (24 Mg C ha−1) in comparison to NT; however, both labile-C and microbial-C decreased by 15% to NT, while, decreased by 40% to MP. These results lead us to believe that, since LUC is inevitable, we suggested the adoption of the best agricultural management practices, in order to preserve/increase the SOC, reducing the impacts on GHG emissions and, thus, achieving sustainability and profitability. 相似文献
