A pilot program to evaluate the feasibility of collecting juvenile (seed) scallops using Japanese technology was carried out from October 2001 to April 2002 in the Marine Reserve at La Rinconada, Antofagasta, Chile. The continuous presence of larvae in waters in the reserve allowed for collection of 400–15,340 spat per collector and showed the high reproductive capability of local scallops and the relationship between numbers of larvae in the water and amount of spatfall. Highest rates of settlement were proportional to high numbers of umbone larvae in the water at >5000 larvae m−3 when collectors were first immersed. Absence of a relationship between larval numbers and postlarval settlement with trophic factors such as chlorophyll and particulate organic matter in the water suggests that productivity was not limited by these factors. Harvest of spat from collectors immersed for four and five months had recovery efficiencies of 5.5% and 59.4% compared with settlement in collectors after immersion for one month. Cohort analyses of recovered spat suggested that settlement occurred over the lengthy immersion period and was due to the continuous presence of larvae in the water. The loss of a high percentage of spat over the 4–5 immersion period compared with settlement in the first month can be attributed to intraspecific competition of spat density and growth as well as clogging of the collectors by sediment and marine fouling that impeded a flow of water through the nets.  相似文献

The effect of six isocaloric diets with different protein (10%, 20% and 30%) and lipids (6% and 12%) contents was evaluated on growth and maturation of male and female juvenile P. llamasi crayfish. The experiment was carried out using individual plastic chambers within a closed, recirculating system with constant temperature. After 90 days, specific growth rate (SGR) values were generally low for both sexes. Lowest SGR for females was 0.4 with diet D1 (10/6) and highest was 0.7 with diet D4 (20/12). The lowest SGR for males was 0.3 with diet D1 (10/6) and the highest was 0.6 with diet D4 (20/12). Feed conversion ratio (FCR) varied from 1.1 to 1.8, and survival was generally high (> 80%) for both sexes. The Maturation Index (MI) behaved in a similar way to the Gonadosomatic Index (GI), manifesting a close relationship with dietary protein and lipids contents. Diet had a significant effect on maturation in females. The effect of protein and lipids content was significant with a direct relationship between these values and the MI and GI. Diets with the highest protein content had the best GI and MI values and all diets with 12% lipids had better MI and GI values than diets with 6%. Unlike the growth performance, the best maturation results were produced by the 30/12 diet. Based on the different observed effects of the diets on growth and maturation, it is recommended the use of a 20/12 diet for growth and a 30/12 diet for maturation.  相似文献

  1. The knowledge and awareness that the general public has about aquatic invertebrates is often poor, even when they are highly threatened. The frequent lack of popular names and the unattractiveness of the scientific ones may be among the factors hindering the knowledge of these organisms and, consequently, the awareness of their conservation status and the willingness to conserve them.
  2. Linderiella baetica (Crustacea, Branchiopoda, Anostraca) was discovered in 2007 in southern Spain and is considered a critically endangered species. However, being a small invertebrate inhabiting generally unappreciated temporary ponds, this species was completely unknown by the general public, even in the area in which it occurs.
  3. To increase the knowledge and awareness of L. baetica, 1,347 children from five schools within its distribution area participated in a contest to select a common name for this newly described taxon. The winning name, gambilusa (Andalusian shrimp), will be used in the future by the Spanish Ministry of Environment and hopefully by the general public to identify the species.
  4. The contest was found to have increased the knowledge about the target species in a sustained manner, as 1 year later, 93% of the children recognized gambilusa as a crustacean, 75% remembered its typical habitat, and 89% broadly identified its geographical distribution.
  5. This kind of name-choosing contest is applicable for different regions and taxa to raise awareness on the conservation of threatened but poorly known biota.

Twenty Katahdin?×?Pelibuey crossbreed male lambs, 3 to 4 months of age and 24?±?0.3 kg of body weight, were used to study the anthelmintic effects of administering extracts of Salix babylonica L. (SB) and Leucaena leucocephala Lam. (LL). Lambs had not been treated with anthelmintics previously and were randomly allocated into four groups of five lambs each in a completely randomized design. Treatments were as follows: control (lambs fed on total mixed ration without extracts), SB (as control plus S. babylonica L. extract at 30 ml/day), LL (as control plus L. leucocephala Lam. extract at 30 ml/day), and SBLL (as control plus 30 ml/day of S. babylonica L. and L. leucocephala Lam. extracts in a 1:1 (v/v) mixture) for 63 days. Extracts were orally administered before the 8:00 a.m. feeding to each lamb. Rectal fecal samples were collected from each lamb at day 22 (P1), day 43 (P2), and day 63 (P3) of the experiment. Adult worm and egg counts were determined in each fecal sample immediately after collection. Plant secondary metabolites of total phenolics, saponins, and the aqueous fraction were 50 % lower in the SB versus LL extracts. Overall, the oral administration of extracts has improved the egg and worm count reductions in lamb feces by 54, 47, and 40 % for LL, SB, and SBLL, respectively, versus the control lambs. Reductions of worm egg counts in lamb feces were higher (P?<?0.05) in P2 and P3 versus P1. Extracts of SB and LL or possibly isolated bioactive compounds could be a promising alternative to conventional anthelmintics to treat gastrointestinal parasites of small ruminants. Such treatments could be used in control strategies against gastrointestinal nematodes in organic and conventional production systems.  相似文献

Native species show adaptive traits that are difficult to find in introduced species. The Pampas region in Argentina is a valuable nature reserve of grasses and Paspalum dilatatum Poir. is one of the most important grasses found there. Based on ploidy level and on morphological traits, five biotypes of P. dilatatum have been described. Two of them were included in this study: a tetraploid biotype with sexual reproduction and a pentaploid biotype with apomictic reproduction. We analyzed the genetic diversity in eight native populations from the Salado basin, Argentina, using both quantitative traits and molecular data (RAPD) with these aims: to obtain information of the degree of phenotypic variation in that area, to know which the pattern of distribution of this variation is and to look for association between molecular markers with populational or biotypic differentiation. Cluster analysis based on morphological data grouped the individuals of the different populations by ploidy level. Molecular markers showed the inverse situation because individuals were grouped by geographic origin as opposed to biotype. Moreover, since RAPD did not discriminate between biotypes with sexual or apomictic reproduction, they are probably not associated with mating system. The results let us conclude that polygenic traits such as LP, LBSR, NRT and NSP can discriminate between biotypes and molecular markers such as bands 12, 40, 19 and 46 can be used to discriminate among populations, probably because they detect neutral variation. The sediments of the Tagus estuary North Channel arecharacterised by high concentrations of trace metals andmonosulphides. During dredging operations Cd, Cu and Pb wereanalysed in water and suspended sediments collected 50 to 100 m around the dredging point. Concentrations in bothfractions fluctuated randomly: 2–3 fold for Cd and Cu and 10 for Pb. Since sampling in the dredging point reflectsintegration of rapid chemical reactions, a short-termlaboratory experiment was conducted to follow the geochemicalalterations occurring in the highest turbidity sites. Theexperiment was monitored as a function of time over a period of4 hr in short time intervals. Dissolved oxygen, pH, EH,AVS, SO4 2-, Cl- and metals were monitored in theslurry samples. Iron, Mn, Cd, Pb and Cu were determined in thedissolved fraction (<0.45 μm), in the reactive solid phaseand in the total fraction. Resuspension resulted in asignificant release of Fe, Mn, Cd, Cu and Pb from the solids.Following the release Pb and Cu were almost totally scavengedin the 4 hr by the newly precipitated Fe oxyhydroxides, while more than 50% of the mobilised Cd remained in the dissolved fraction. The less efficient removal of Cd from solution implies a prolonged availability of this metal in the environment.  相似文献

Melanoma is one of the most frequently metastasizing malignant neoplasias. This study examines an experimental model of pulmonary metastasis and the B16F10 cell subline, highly metastatic in the lung. Antimetastatic effects of the flavonoids tangeretin, rutin, and diosmin were analyzed, and at the same time an analysis of the metastatic activity of ethanol was performed, considered to be necessary because it is used as a vehicle for administering the flavonoids. Lentini's model, which complements the macroscopic evaluation of nodule numbers by using a stereoscopic microscope and image analysis at the microscopic level, was used. The greatest reduction in the number of metastatic nodules (52%) was obtained with diosmin; similarly, the percentages of implantation, growth index, and invasion index (79.40, 67.44, and 45.23%, respectively), were all compared with those of the ethanol group, considered to be an effective control group. Rutin- and tangeretin-treated groups also showed reductions of the same index compared with the ethanol group. It would seem that structural factors would better explain these results and the antimetastatic activity of each flavonoid and the respective metabolites.  相似文献

Organochlorine pesticides still generate public health concerns because of their unresolved health impact and their persistence in living beings, which is demanding appropriate analytical techniques for their monitoring. In this study, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay based on monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) for the detection of an important group of organochlorine pesticides, the cyclodiene group, has been developed. With this aim, several hapten-protein conjugates, characterized by exposure of the common hexachlorinated bicyclic (norbornene) moiety and differing in the linking structure to the carrier protein, were prepared. From mice immunized with these conjugates, several MAbs with the ability to sensitively bind the majority of cyclodienes were obtained. Among them CCD2.2 MAb displaying the broadest recognition to cyclodiene compounds (endosulfan, dieldrin, endrin, chlordane, heptachlor, aldrin, toxaphene: I(50) values in the 6-25 nM range) was selected for the assay. Interestingly, this MAb showed certain stereospecificity toward other polychlorinated cycloalkanes because the gamma-isomer of hexachlorocyclohexane (lindane) was also very well recognized (I(50) value of 22 nM). This immunoassay is potentially a very valuable analytical tool for the rapid and sensitive determination of cyclodiene insecticides and related compounds, which in turn may contribute to the understanding of the biological activities and of the overall environmental impact of these persistent organic pollutants.  相似文献

A PCR-ELISA technique was developed for the semiquantitative detection of Nile perch (Lates niloticus) in experimentally sterilized fish muscle mixtures. Specific oligonucleotides derived from the 5S rDNA gene of Nile perch were selected. A forward primer, together with a reverse digoxigenin-labeled primer, permitted the amplification of specific 185 bp DNA fragments showing DNA intensities proportional to the contents of Nile perch muscle tissue in the fish mixtures. A biotinylated probe immobilized onto streptavidin-coated microplates was used to capture the digoxigenin-labeled fragments that were detected with peroxidase antidigoxigenin conjugate. Subsequent enzymatic conversion of substrate gave distinct absorbance differences when assaying fish binary mixtures containing different percentages of Nile perch muscle.  相似文献
