To understand the environmental factors affecting the density of foraging seabirds across the cold-water belt in the southwestern Okhotsk Sea, we conducted a 1-day (180-km transect length) shipboard seabird survey off the northeastern coast of Hokkaido during summer in 2019, along with acoustic observations of potential prey (zooplankton and fish) biomass, thermosalinograph measurements, and CTD observations. Planktivorous short-tailed shearwaters Ardenna tenuirostris (66% of total seabirds) and piscivorous rhinoceros auklets Cerorhinca monocerata (28%) were predominant, but foraged in contrasting habitats. A large foraging flock of shearwaters was observed in the cold-water belt zone, including its front with coastal Soya Warm Current Water and the offshore Fresh Surface Okhotsk Sea Water, where surface chlorophyll a concentrations were the highest but not related to their prey (zooplankton) biomass at any spatial scale between 4.6 and 9.2 km. In contrast, the density of auklets was high in the coastal Soya Warm Current Water, where the acoustically determined fish biomass was large, and showed a positive relationship with the fish biomass especially in the lower layer (29–104 m depth) at any spatial scale. This species-specific difference in response to prey biomass might be related to prey-searching behaviors; i.e., rhinoceros auklets search prey underwater visually, but short-tailed shearwater can use both visual and olfactory cues to locate zooplankton patches from the air.

The objective of the current study is to evaluate the association between fatty acid composition and fatty acid synthase gene polymorphisms as responsible mutations. For this purpose, we selected seven previously reported single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in FASN gene, including one within promoter region (g.841G>C) and six non‐synonymous SNPs (g.8805C>T, g.13126C>T, g.15532A>C, g.16024A>G, g.16039C>T, g.17924A>G), and genotyped them in Japanese Black cattle. Genotyping results revealed that g.8805 C>T and g.17924 A>G were monomorphic loci. Genome‐wide association analysis including the other five SNPs revealed that only g.841G>C showed significant associations with the percentages of C14:0, C14:1, C16:1 and C18:1 at 5% genome‐wide significance level. In order to further evaluate the effect, we genotyped g.841G>C using additional three populations, including two Japanese Black populations and a Holstein cattle population. g.16024A>G was also genotyped and included in the analysis because it has been reported to be associated with fatty acid composition in Japanese Black cattle. In the result of analysis of variance, g.841G>C showed stronger effects on fatty acid percentage than those of g.16024A>G in all populations. These results suggested that g.841G>C would be a responsible mutation for fatty acid composition and contribute to production of high‐grade beef as a selection marker in beef cattle.  相似文献

Vertnin (VRTN) is involved in the variation of vertebral number in pigs and it is located on Sus scrofa chromosome 7. Vertebral number is related to body size in pigs, and many reports have suggested presence of an association between body length (BL) and meat production traits. Therefore, we analyzed the relationship between the VRTN genotype and the production and body composition traits in purebred Duroc pigs. Intramuscular fat content (IMF) in the Longissimus muscle was significantly associated with the VRTN genotype. The mean IMF of individuals with the wild‐type genotype (Wt/Wt) (5.22%) was greater than that of individuals with the Wt/Q (4.99%) and Q/Q genotypes (4.79%). In addition, a best linear unbiased predictor of multiple traits animal model showed that the Wt allele had a positive effect on the IMF breeding value. No associations were observed between the VRTN genotype and other production traits. The VRTN genotype was related to BL. The Q/Q genotype individuals (100.0 cm) were longer than individuals with the Wt/Q (99.5 cm) and Wt/Wt genotypes (98.9 cm). These results suggest that in addition to the maintenance of an appropriate backfat thickness value, VRTN has the potential to act as a genetic marker of IMF.  相似文献

Some indica rice varieties are potential phytoextractors for paddy fields polluted with Cd because of their high biomass and because they can accumulate Cd to moderate levels in their shoots. To establish a practical phytoextraction system, phytoextraction using two indica rice cultivars (MORETSU and IR-8) was carried out in a paddy field polluted with moderate Cd levels (2.91 and 2.52 mg kg−1, respectively). The Cd concentration and Cd uptake of MORETSU increased when irrigation water was drained at the maximum tillering stage, and the paddy soil was under oxidative conditions until harvesting. The Cd uptake of MORETSU and IR-8 increased and reached 516 and 657 g ha−1, respectively, at the beginning of October. After phytoextraction using these high Cd accumulating rice varieties for 2 years, the Cd concentration in the paddy field decreased by 18% compared with the initial Cd concentration. The Cd concentration in the rice grains of a japonica ordinary rice variety (HINOHIKARI) subsequently grown on the field after the phytoextraction was lower than the concentration in rice grown on a non-phytoextracted field. These results suggest that phytoextraction using high Cd accumulating rice varieties with early drainage of irrigation water is a practical remediation system for moderate Cd polluted paddy fields in southwest Japan.  相似文献

Rats were orally dosed with a 1:1 diastereomixture of N-[(R)-1-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)ethyl]-2-cyano-3,3-dimethylbutanamide (Delaus, S-2900) and N-[(S)-1-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)ethyl]-2-cyano-3,3-dimethylbutanamide (S-2900S), both labeled with 14C, at 200 mg/kg/day for 5 consecutive days, and 16 metabolites in urine and feces were purified by a combination of several chromatographic techniques. The chemical structures of all isolated metabolites were identified by spectroanalyses (NMR and MS). Several of them were unique decyanated and/or cyclic compounds (lactone, imide, cyclic amide, cyclic imino ether forms). Major biotransformation reactions of the mixture of S-2900 and S-2900S in rats are proposed on the basis of the metabolites identified in this study.  相似文献

Renal tubular dysplasia is an autosomal recessively inherited disorder in Japanese black cattle that is due to deletion mutations in the claudin-16 gene and causes chronic renal failure and death of affected animals. Here, we report a multiplex-PCR procedure to determine the genotype for claudin-16 deficiency in preimplantation embryos. The presence or absence of the wild-type and mutant allele(s) was precisely detected with the multiplex-PCR using as little as 5 pg of genomic DNA from leukocytes. When biopsied embryo cells were examined for claudin-16 deficiency, 97.2% of genotypes were consistent with the PCR results obtained for the corresponding embryos. In addition, sexing of embryos by PCR was performed using an aliquot of DNA extracted from biopsied embryo cells, and determination of claudin-16 genotype and sex was successfully achieved with an efficiency of 91.7% for claudin-16 genotyping and 83.3% for sexing. The production of a 100-day fetus that was male and homozygous for claudin-16 deficiency, as expected from the analysis of biopsied embryo cells, gave evidence of the reliability and applicability of this procedure for preventing the transmission of this disease and for enabling advances in animal breeding.  相似文献

Here, we report the variability in the KIT tyrosine kinase receptor and its ligand KITLG genes by determining single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 384 individuals including 11 pig breeds, two synthetic-line cross pigs, two cross breeds, and one Japanese wild boar. SNPs and indels within the coding sequence regions of KITLG and KIT and their 5'-flanking regions were detected by aligning sequences from eight pigs, and subsequently the SNPs were genotyped using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI TOF-MS). Principal component analysis using allele frequencies in the SNP locus showed a distant relationship between Asian and Euro-American pig groups, except for Berkshire and Tokyo X breeds. These breeds were located within the mid-portion of the distribution in the first principal component. The Hampshire breed was distant from the other pig groups on the axis of the second principal component. Haplotype frequencies that were deduced using non-synonymous substitutions of the KIT gene revealed the uniqueness of Landrace, Large White, Middle White, and three-way cross pigs (LWD) and of the Hampshire breed. On the other hand, the haplotypes of KITLG and KIT detected in the Berkshire breed were prevalent in Asian pig groups. This tendency is different from that observed in other Euro-American pig breeds.  相似文献

Synthetic oligodeoxynucleotides with CpG motifs (CpG-ODNs) have gained attention because it elicits strong innate immune responses. CpG-ODNs promote the production of T-helper 1(T(H)1) and pro-inflammatory cytokines. In fish, knowledge of the effects of CpG-ODNs on the expression of cytokine genes is scarce. In this study, we report that CpG-ODNs induce the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in common carp head kidney leucocytes in vitro. Evidence of a T(H)1 type immune stimulation was observed as the fish homologs of IP-10 (interferon gamma-inducible protein 10; CXCL10) and MCP (monocyte chemotactic protein a CC-chemokine) were induced by CpG. Interleukin 10, a cytokine inhibitory factor, failed to be induced by CpG. These results suggest a robust immune stimulation can be achieved by CpGs and has a potential as an immunostimulant in aquaculture.  相似文献

Hyperlipemia in horses is a disorder of lipid metabolism peculiar to ponies. This study reports changes of blood biochemical values from the acute to the postconvalescent phases in 3 Shetland ponies with hyperlipemia in Japan. Diseased ponies (all 7 to 9 years old, in late pregnancy, and obese) were fed in the same farm. The periods of their hospitalizations ranged from 30 to 45 days. Twelve well-conditioned ponies (3 to 13 years old) around parturition were used to establish baseline values for blood test results. Main clinical findings in the affected ponies were depression, dysphagia, anorexia, ventral edema and milky-appearing plasma. Hypertriglyceridemia (40- to 70-fold rise of controls) was found in the acute phase of the disease in the affected ponies, and was derived from increased very-low density lipoproteins. Aspartate transaminase and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase activities, blood urea nitrogen, and creatinin concentrations were increased in acute ponies compared to controls, suggesting impairment of liver and kidney functions. However, these values gradually recovered until the end of postconvalescent phase. Hyperinsulinemia was observed in the acute phase of the hyperlipemia of all affected ponies. And an exaggerated insulin response to intravenous glucose was observed in the 2 ponies given intravenous glucose tolerance tests. These findings suggest decreased insulin sensitivity in hyperlipemic ponies.  相似文献
