Atmospheric nitrogen oxides (NOx =NO+ NO2) play a pivotal role in the cycling of reactive nitrogen (ultimately deposited as nitrate) and the oxidative capacity of the atmosphere. Combined measurements of nitrogen and oxygen stable isotope ratios of nitrate collected in the Arctic atmosphere were used to infer the origin and fate of NOx and nitrate on a seasonal basis. In spring, photochemically driven emissions of reactive nitrogen from the snowpack into the atmosphere make local oxidation of NOx by bromine oxide the major contributor to the nitrate budget. The comprehensive isotopic composition of nitrate provides strong constraints on the relative importance of the key atmospheric oxidants in the present atmosphere, with the potential for extension into the past using ice cores. 相似文献

The selective fermentation by human gut bacteria of gluco-oligosaccharides obtained from the reaction between the glucosyl group of sucrose and cellobiose, catalyzed by dextransucrases (DSR) from Leuconostoc mesenteroides , has been evaluated. Oligosaccharides were fractionated according to their molecular weight, and their effect on the growth of different bacterial groups was studied. To determine the structure (position and configuration of glycosidic linkages)-function relationship, their properties were compared to those of DSR maltose acceptor products (DSRMal) and of recognized prebiotic carbohydrates (fructo-oligosaccharides, FOS). Cellobiose acceptor products (DSRCel) showed bifidogenic properties similar to those of FOS. We studied the relative value of natural habitats, river and coastal wetlands, and artificial habitats, irrigation canal and ponds, for the conservation of an endangered fish, Iberian toothcarp, in its southernmost area of distribution, characterised by agricultural intensification. Our results show that the bulk of the population of the Iberian toothcarp is concentrated in irrigation ponds. Natural habitats sustained null or impoverished subpopulations, and individuals showed signs of low metabolic activity. This coincided with the relatively high habitat quality observed in ponds, particularly those with submerged aquatic vegetation, in contrast with the chronic eutrophication of the coastal lagoons. In spite of a generalised aggressive management in the irrigation system, featured by periodic vegetation clearance, desiccation and biocide treatment, the subpopulation of the Iberian toothcarp thrives in it probably thanks to adequate water quality and to an active path dynamics maintained by connectivity through the canal. Agro-environmental measures are discussed for the improvement of this species conservation in natural and artificial habitats. 相似文献

Trichogramma spp. are major parasitoids of lepidopteran pest eggs, but there is large variation in efficacy toward a given pest among
the numerous described Trichogramma species. It is important to select the Trichogramma species that most effectively parasitize and develop in target pest eggs for biological control. In this context, Trichogramma pretiosum, T. exiguum, T. atopovirilia and T. acacioi were studied in Heliothis virescens eggs under different thermal conditions. The parasitoids were reared at constant temperatures of 20, 25 and 30°C and tested
at these respective temperatures, while parasitoids reared at 25°C were also tested at 20 and 30°C, for a total of 20 species–temperature
combinations. About 30 H. virescens eggs were offered to the parasitoids for 24 h. Among the four species, parasitism rate by T. atopovirilia was highest at all temperature conditions, whereas T. acacioi had the lowest rates of parasitism at 25°C and 25/30°C. Parasitism ranged from 13.8 to 43.8% among all species–temperature
combinations. Viability (emerged parasitoids) ranged from 80.8 to 98.4%, and was deemed satisfactory. The emergence rates
of T. exiguum and T. acacioi were affected by temperature. Temperature also affected the sex ratio of T. exiguum at 25/30°C, whereas T. pretiosum and T. acacioi produced females predominantly independent of temperature. Overall, the parasitoid T. atopovirilia was the most efficient in parasitizing H. virescens eggs, though the levels of parasitism obtained might not ensure its successful use in biological control programs. Feline parotid salivary duct sialocele is an uncommon disorder that has been previously reported in association with traumatic rupture of the duct in only two cats. Both cases were successfully treated by proximal duct ligation. We describe the successful surgical treatment of a parotid duct sialocele, secondary to spontaneous salivary duct stenosis, in an adult domestic shorthair cat. The cat was referred for assessment of a recurrent fluid-filled swelling on the left side of the face. Cytology of the aspirated fluid was consistent with serous saliva. The anatomical localisation of the lesion and the nature of the fluid were indicative of parotid gland/duct involvement. Retrograde sialography by parotid duct cannulation was unsuccessful because the left parotid duct opening was stenosed and obstructed by scar tissue. Surgical exploration revealed a parotid salivary duct sialocele, which was completely removed along with the parotid gland without complications. 相似文献

The emergence of virulent root-knot nematode populations, able to overcome the resistance conferred by some of the resistance
genes (R-genes) in Solanaceous crops, i.e., Mi(s) in tomato, Me(s) in pepper, may constitute a severe limitation to their use in the field. Research has been conducted to evaluate the durability
of these R-genes, by comparing the reproduction of several laboratory-selected and wild virulent Meloidogyne incognita isolates, on both susceptible and resistant tomatoes and peppers. We first show that the Me1 R-gene in pepper behaves as a robust R-gene controlling avirulent and virulent Me3, Me7 or Mi-1 isolates. Although the reproductive potential of the virulent isolates was highly variable on susceptible and resistant plants,
we also confirm that virulence is highly specific to a determined R-gene on which selection has occurred. Another significant
experimental result is the observation that a reproductive fitness cost is associated with nematode virulence against Mi-1 in tomato and Me3 and Me7 in pepper. The adaptative significance of trade-offs between selected characters and fitness-related traits, suggests that,
although the resistance can be broken, it may be preserved in some conditions if the virulent nematodes are counter-selected

Determination of taurine in infant formulas using ultrafiltration and cation-exchange chromatography

A fast and simple method for determination of taurine in infant formulas has been developed. The sample preparation uses disposable ultrafiltration cartridges to remove protein and clarify the sample. Hydrolysis is avoided, simplifying the procedure and increasing efficiency. One mL sample is centrifuged in a cartridge for 45 min. The filtrate is diluted with pH 2.2 citrate buffer and injected into a high performance amino acid analyzer. A cation-exchange column (sodium phase) is used with a single buffer eluant and an isocratic chromatographic program. Colorimetric detection is performed following post-column ninhydrin reaction. Chromatographic resolution from other ninhydrin-positive compounds is excellent. Average recoveries for 3 levels of spike for various products were 100-102%. Precision is 1-3% RSD, depending on product. Linearity, specificity, and ruggedness are excellent. The method is applicable to quality control testing of milk-based, soy-based, and prehydrolyzed protein-based infant formulas in the ready-to-use, concentrate, and powder forms. A variety of commercially available infant formulas from different manufacturers were analyzed and all were found to contain taurine levels comparable to human milk. To obtain structure-function information of a range of carbohydrates, which are available only in very small quantities, an in vitro fermentation method using 7 mg of carbohydrate, 0.7 mL of basal medium, and 1% (w/v) of fecal bacteria was validated against a pH-controlled batch culture with 150 mL of basal medium and 1.5 g of test carbohydrate. This method was used to determine the influence of different glycosidic linkages and monosaccharide compositions of disaccharides on the selectivity of microbial fermentation. A prebiotic index (PI) was calculated for each disaccharide. Generally, disaccharides with linkages of 1-2, 1-4, and 1-6 generated a high PI score, with kojibiose and sophorose showing the greatest values (21.62 and 18.63, respectively). Apart from 6alpha-mannobiose, mannose-containing disaccharides gave a low PI due to low numbers of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli and an increase in bacteroides. The structure-function information obtained in this study may lead to a predictive understanding of how specific structures are fermented by the human gut microflora. 相似文献

Determination of changes in 2-furoylmethyl amino acids and hydroxymethylfurfural during the storage of four honey samples at 25 and 35 degrees C during 12 months was achieved to assess the potential use of both parameters, singly or in combination, as quality indicators. 2-Furoylmethyl amino acids increased during storage at both temperatures, whereas hydroxymethylfurfural only presented slight variations during storage at 25 degrees C but increased noticeably at 35 degrees C. The study of 2-furoylmethyl amino acids in 49 commercial honeys revealed that 2-furoylmethyl lysine (furosine) was present in all samples, whereas 2-furoylmethyl derivatives of arginine, GABA, and proline were only present in seven samples. Hydroxymethylfurfural can be considered as a good indicator of heat treatments applied to honey samples, whereas 2-furoylmethyl amino acids can be used as suitable markers of the storage period. The use of both parameters can be useful to detect adulteration with invert syrups, excessive heat treatments, or prolonged storage of honey samples. 相似文献
