The recent devastating wildfire on Mt. Carmel provided a unique opportunity to evaluate a fire-risk map constructed for the region, published two years ago in this journal. This largest forest fire in the history of Israel, occurred during December 2010, covering 2180 ha, burning more than half-million trees and causing the loss of life of 45 people.A study of fire risk in this area was conducted between 2007 and 2009 utilizing a combination of Monte Carlo simulation of spatial spread of fire ignition with fire behavior model (FARSITE). The fire risk map produced in 2009 is assessed here with reference to the area burnt during December 2010. The results showed that most of burnt areas corresponded to high risk levels in the risk map. According to a null model, the five lower risk levels taken together would have corresponded to 50% of the burnt area, while in fact they were presented in only 5.6% of the area. In contrast, the three highest risk levels, for which the null model expectation would be a representation of 30%, were represented in 87% of the area. Comparing the fire risk map against the map of the real recent fire provided support to the general approach, and strengthened the confidence of our fire risk model.  相似文献

Ephemeral gully erosion in northwestern Spain   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
This study aimed to describe types of ephemeral gullies and to determine their origin, evolution and importance as sediment sources in A Coruña province (northwest Spain). Ephemeral gullies and/or rills have been measured in a representative sample of medium-textured soils, most prone to crusting, developed over basic schist. This sample consisted of 11 small sites, ranging from 0.63 to 7.34 ha. A case study of concentrated (rill+gully) erosion in a 0.47-ha catchment with coarse-textured soils developed over granite was also reported. The mean slope of the sites studied ranged from 6.1% to 16.8%. Main periods when soil surface was poorly covered were late spring (maize seedbeds) and late autumn–early winter (grassland and winter cereal seedbeds). Case studies where fields were left bare in winter were also investigated. Soil incision and channel formation were observed even with relatively low rainfall intensities when the soil surface was sealed, but also after a single short intense rainfall event on recently tilled surfaces. Concentrated erosion took place mainly on seedbeds and newly tilled soils in late spring and by autumn or early winter, but gullies also appeared in other seasons when the soil surface was left bare. In most of the cases studied, ephemeral gully erosion caused significant soil losses, ranging between 2 and 5 m3/ha for a single season to locally, over 25 m3/ha. Gully development was significantly affected by agricultural operations, such as lineal elements often acting as initial axes of concentrated erosion. Since pristine Atlantic Forest remnants are vanishing, and biological reserves are in short, conservation of biodiversity will largely depend on proper management of the anthropogenic matrix. Here, we test (1) the effectiveness of ecologically-managed tree monocultures in maintaining Araucaria Forest biodiversity, (2) how this effectiveness change among taxa, and (3) we discuss management principles that can be used by the forestry industry in order to contribute positively to biodiversity conservation. The study was conducted in the São Francisco de Paula National Forest, southern Brazil, an environmental mosaic composed mostly of patches of Araucaria Forest and ecologically-managed monocultures of Araucaria, Pinus and Eucalyptus. Using standardized sampling methods in these four main habitats, we have recorded the richness and species composition of small mammals, birds, leaf-litter frogs, butterflies, galling insects, spiders, opiliones, flatworms, woody plants, epiphytic angiosperms, epiphytic ferns, lichens, and fruit-body producing fungi. Overall, we recorded 506 species in Araucaria Forest, 181 (36%) of which were exclusive of this habitat while 325 (64%) could be found in at least one monoculture. Distribution patterns of species richness and number of records across taxonomic groups showed that a large biodiversity can be found inside ecologically-managed plantations of Araucaria, Pinus, and Eucalyptus. For all studied taxa, except for epiphytic angiosperms and fruit-body producing fungi, more than half of the Araucaria Forest species could be found living on monocultures. We discuss how the actual management practices of the forest industry can be improved to contribute positively to the conservation of the Atlantic Forest biodiversity.  相似文献

A liquid chromatography (LC) method with luminescence detection for the determination of eight quinolone antibiotics is reported. The system encompasses three consecutive steps: (a) chromatographic separation using reverse-phase mode (RP-LC), (b) postcolumn derivatization reaction, and (c) luminescence detection by monitoring fluorescence (FL) and time-resolved (TR) signals. The derivatization step is based on the reaction between quinolones and terbium(III) to form luminescent chelates, which were determined at lambda(ex) 340 and lambda(em) 545 nm (FL mode) or at lambda(ex) 281 and lambda(em) 545 nm (TR mode). Dynamic ranges of the calibration graphs, obtained with standard solutions of analytes and FL and TR modes, respectively, were 190-3500 and 316-2000 ng mL-1 for marbofloxacin, 8-3500 and 8.1-1500 ng mL-1 for ciprofloxacin, 6.2-3500 and 13-1500 ng mL-1 for danofloxacin, 7.4-3500 and 8.4-1500 ng mL-1 for enrofloxacin, 14-3500 and 20-2000 ng mL-1 for sarafloxacin, 12.5-3500 and 13.9-1200 ng mL-1 for difloxacin, 7.6-3500 and 13-3000 ng mL-1 for oxolinic acid, and 9-2000 and 130-3000 ng mL-1 for flumequine. Limit of detection values obtained using FL and TR modes, respectively, were 60 and 95 ng mL-1 for marbofloxacin, 2 and 2.4 ng mL-1 for ciprofloxacin, 1.9 and 3.9 ng mL-1 for danofloxacin, 2.2 and 2.5 ng mL-1 for enrofloxacin, 3.8 and 7 ng mL-1 for sarafloxacin, 4 and 4.2 ng mL-1 for difloxacin, 2.3 and 4 ng mL-1 for oxolinic acid, and 2.7 and 40 ng mL-1 for flumequine. The precision was established at two concentration levels of each analyte and expressed as the percentage of relative standard deviation with values ranging between 1.9 and 7.8%. The validation procedure for the analysis of samples was carried out using European Community recommendations, and the decision limit and detection capability were calculated for bovine whole milk. The method was applied to whole, semiskimmed, and skimmed milk samples spiked with the target analytes, and the recoveries ranged between 93.3 and 106.0%.  相似文献
