Baseline culture parameters for the cyclopoid copepod Oithona colcarva: a potential new live feed for marine fish larviculture 下载免费PDF全文
Feeding copepods during early larval culture stages of marine fish has proven to be advantageous for growth and survival of marine finfish larvae. However, commercial availability of most copepods is limited; thus, there is an impetus to evaluate promising copepod species to meet the diverse dietary demands of various marine fish. The marine cyclopoid copepod, Oithona colcarva, was isolated out of zooplankton samples taken from waters within Tampa Bay, Florida. Once isolated, trials were conducted to determine the appropriate culture parameters for producing nauplii to feed marine fish larvae. The effects of temperature (22°C, 26°C and 30°C), salinity (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 g L?1), stocking density (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 and 8.0 individuals mL?1) and diet (Nanno 3600 microalgae paste, Colurella adriatica, Rhodomonas lens, Tisochrysis lutea, Chaetoceros gracilis and/or Tetraselmis chuii) on nauplii production during a single life cycle of reproducing individuals were examined. Results of those trials indicated that a culture temperature of 30°C and a salinity of 30 g L?1 were advantageous for maximum nauplii production. Furthermore, a diet containing a 1:1:1 mixture of T. lutea, C. gracilis and T. chuii and a stocking density of at least 8 individuals mL?1 were identified as beneficial. Bait is an integral part of coastal life, but is perceived as a low‐value resource as fisheries are data‐limited, locally focussed and largely unregulated even though the ecological impacts of collection are considerable. An empirical assessment of three UK‐based ragworm fisheries combined with an analysis of published literature has produced the first global assessment of polychaete bait fisheries. The five most expensive (retail price per kg) marine species sold on the global fisheries market are polychaetes (Glycera dibranchiata, Diopatra aciculata, Nereis (Alitta) virens, Arenicola defodiens and Marphysa sanguinea). We estimate that 1600 t of N. virens per annum (worth £52 million) are landed in the UK with approximately 121 000 tonnes of polychaetes collected globally valued at £5.9 billion. Using remote closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras to monitor collectors, activity at local sites is considerable with a mean of 3.14 collectors per tide (day and night) at one site and individuals digging for up to 3 h per tide, although intensity differed seasonally and between sites. Collectors removed on average 1.4 kg of N. virens per person per hour, walking a considerable distance across the intertidal sediment to reach areas that were usually already dug. The implications of these human activity and biomass removal levels are explored in the context of fisheries and conservation management. At local, regional and national scales, polychaete bait fisheries are highly valuable, extract significant biomass and have considerable impacts; therefore, they urgently require governance equivalent to other fisheries. 相似文献

In two 20-week grazing experiments, a rigid rotational system of grazing termed the ‘Wye College’ system was compared with a flexible paddock-grazing system in 1972 and with strip grazing and set-stocking in 1973. Eight spring calved Ayrshire cows were used on each treatment at a stocking rate of 5 cows/ha (2 cows/ac). The mean daily milk yields per cow were 17·7 and 17·0 kg(39·0 and 37·5 Ib) on the Wye College and the paddock systems, respectively, in 1972; and 17·9, 17·7 and 16·4 kg (39·4, 38·9 and 36·2 Ib) on the Wye College, strip, and set-stocking systems in 1973. The average annual output of milk varied from 11,500 kg/ha (1030 gal/ac) on the set-stocking system to 12,500 kg ha (1120 gal/ac) on the Wye College system, but none of the differences was significant. The most rapid decline in daily milk yield occurred on the set-stocking system in August and September as the amount of available herbage declined. This system requires further investigation. It is concluded that the Wye College system, with its rigid and pre-determined grazing cycle was as effective as either a one-day paddock or a daily strip-grazing system in producing high yields of milk. 相似文献

Blanket bog in western Ireland is a wet infertile habitat, heavily grazed by sheep and cattle, and supporting very low densities of Red Grouse and other wild birds and mammals. An experiment using phosphatic fertilizers increased the growth of vegetation and the nutritive value of the Heather. There followed an increase in the population density of Grouse: territories became smaller and the Grouse reared bigger broods. Two silages of contrasting protein content were compared in a 16-week winter-feeding experiment with 12 Ayrshire cows. One silage contained 8.2% DCP in its DM and the other 15.9% DCP. The silages were fed ad lib . with a supplement of either barley or barley plus groundnut cake. The DM digestibilities of the low and high protein silages were 74 and 67%, respectively, and the calculated S.E.s 56 and 47. Silage and total DM intakes were highest in the treatments containing low protein silage and in those containing groundnut. The mean daily milk yields for the treatments with and without groundnut were 35.4 and 32.s5 Ib (16.1 and 14.8 kg), respectively, with the high-protein silage, and 38.1 and 35.0 Ib (17.3 and 15.9 kg) with the low-protein silage. The S.N.F. contents of the milk were low and averaged 8.26 and 8.34% on the high- and low-protein silage treatments, respectively, and were not affected significantly by the supplements. It is concluded that the low-protein silage was superior to the high-protein silage as a feed for cows, and that the digestibility of the silage DM was a truer indication of quality than protein content. 相似文献
