Summary The biomass of newborn snails was higher in paddy soil without rice plants than in the soil with rice plants. There was an inverse correlation between shell width and concentratins of Zn and Cu in snail flesh. The Zn and Cu concentrations in snail flesh were extremely high compared with those in the paddy soil surrounding the snails, possibly because snails ingest sludge, one of the main components of the composts. These results suggest that this type of snail may be used to eliminate Zn and Cu from paddy soil when composted sewage sludge has been applied. 相似文献

A seven-year-old, female, domestic short hair cat was presented with a history of chronic anorexia. Radiographic examination revealed a large space-occupying calcified mass in the abdominal cavity. The mass was located in pylorus and did not extend into the duodenum and surrounding tissues. Billroth I gastroduodenostomy was conducted to remove the mass. Histopathological examination of the mass showed a lymphoma. Although Recovery following the operation was excellent, the patient showed intermittent vomiting unrelated to feeding. Radiographical examination revealed a megaesophagus, which was assumed to be a complication of the Billroth I procedure, since the condition was not observed before the procedure. 相似文献

Recently, it has been reported that intermittent administration of nitrate, with a nitrate-free interval of 10 to 12 hr eliminated expression of tolerance, and maintained its hypotensive effect. In the present study, we evaluated whether nitrate tolerance developed or not with an intermittent administration of sr-ISDN (5 mg/kg/ once a day) in Wistar rats. The effect of this administration protocol for sr-ISDN on the volume overload heart model, aortovenous fistula, was also examined. Furthermore, blood pressure was monitored by radio telemetry during sr-ISDN (5 mg/kg/once a day) administration. Nitrate tolerance did not develop, and eccentric hypertrophy due to volume overload was moderated by sr-ISDN administration. Sr-ISDN administration maintained blood pressure lower level than the placebo group. In conclusion, prolonged intermittent administration of sr-ISDN maintained its hypotensive effect during the entire experiment period, without developing tolerance, and moderated efferent hypertrophy with attenuated volume overload. 相似文献

It has been reported that cardiac chymase has an effect on cardiac fibrosis through the Angiotensin (Ang) II formation and an Ang II-independent mechanism. In the present study, Ang II type 1 (AT1) receptor blocker (candesartan cilexetil) was administered to dilated cardiomyopathic (DCM; Bio TO2) hamsters for 4 weeks to study the effect of AT1 receptor blocker on cardiac chymase-like activity and cardiac fibrosis. Echocardiography, histological examination, and assessment of cardiac angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)/chymase-like activities were conducted. Hamsters showed cardiac dysfunction due to increased left ventricular dimensions and decreased ventricular wall thickness, significant increase in cardiac chymase-like activity, and fibrosis. This result indicates that the cardiac chymase-like activity is responsible for cardiac fibrosis. When candesartan cilexetil was administered to Bio TO2 hamsters, cardiac chymase-like activity increased significantly, whereas cardiac fibrosis decreased significantly. Cardiac ACE and chymase-like activities were unchanged in non-DCM hamsters with candesartan cilexetil. This suggests that the cardiac Ang II formation mechanism was stimulated by suppressing the effect of cardiac Ang II, and cardiac chymase-like activity could be increased. Moreover, this mechanism may be more highly activated if cardiac Ang II is activated in the heart. In conclusion, we demonstrated that AT1 receptor blocker reduced cardiac fibrosis, although cardiac chymase-like activity increased. Because the Ang II-forming pathway and the effect of chymase in hamsters is similar to that in dogs, the results of the present study may supplement the available information for dogs. 相似文献

We investigated chronological changes in immunohistochemical phenotyping in the thymus and spleen in Crl:CD rats up to the age of about one year. In the thymus, T cells increased markedly from 3 to 4 weeks of age. Proliferating cells also increased markedly at these points. B cells tended towards an increase with age. In the spleen, white pulp increased until 9 weeks of age and remained fairly stable thereafter. In the periarteriolar lymphoid sheath and marginal zone, T cells gradually increased until 9 weeks of age and became almost flat thereafter. In the lymph follicle, T cells increased with age. B cells tended towards an increase with age in all areas of the spleen. It was concluded that development of the thymus was most marked from 3 to 4 weeks of age and that both the thymus and spleen had matured by 9 weeks of age. 相似文献

To reveal the relationship between tolerance to submergence and the distribution ranges of riparian tree species in the floodplains
of the warm-temperate regions in Japan, we assessed the response and tolerance of current-year seedlings of two Salix and three Ulmaceae species to submergence treatments for 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks. We investigated shoot elongation, number of
leaves, and survival rate of seedlings during the experiment, and biomass allocation was determined at the end of the experiment.
Shoot elongation and leaf production of seedlings were suppressed in all the species during the submergence treatments. However,
the seedlings of Salix chaenomeloides and S. pierotii elongated shoots rapidly and produced leaves after the treatments. All the underground biomass in these two species was larger
than aboveground biomass. These results are considered as typical responses of flood-tolerant species. In contrast, the underground
biomass of Ulmaceae seedlings (Celtis sinensis var. japonica, Aphananthe aspera, and Ulmus parvifolia) decreased more rapidly than aboveground biomass during prolonged submergence. Furthermore, A. aspera seedlings also showed suppression of shoot elongation and leaf production after the treatments. Our results indicate that
the three Ulmaceae species are less tolerant to submergence than the two Salix species. In conclusion, we suggest that submergence stress is one of the important factors determining the distribution of

The Ppd-A1 genotype of 240 Japanese wheat cultivars and 40 foreign cultivars was determined using a PCR-based method. Among Japanese cultivars, only 12 cultivars, all of which were Hokkaido winter wheat, carried the Ppd-A1a allele, while this allele was not found in Hokkaido spring wheat cultivars or Tohoku-Kyushu cultivars. Cultivars with a photoperiod-insensitive allele headed 6.9–9.8 days earlier in Kanto and 2.5 days earlier in Hokkaido than photoperiod-sensitive cultivars. The lower effect of photoperiod-insensitive alleles observed in Hokkaido could be due to the longer day-length at the spike formation stage compared with that in Kanto. Pedigree analysis showed that ‘Purple Straw’ and ‘Tohoku 118’ were donors of Ppd-A1a and Ppd-D1a in Hokkaido wheat cultivars, respectively. Wheat cultivars recently developed in Hokkaido carry photoperiod-insensitive alleles at a high frequency. For efficient utilization of Ppd-1 alleles in the Hokkaido wheat-breeding program, the effect of Ppd-1 on growth pattern and grain yield should be investigated. Ppd-A1a may be useful as a unique gene source for fine tuning the heading time in the Tohoku-Kyushu region since the effect of Ppd-A1a on photoperiod insensitivity appears to differ from the effect of Ppd-B1a and Ppd-D1a. 相似文献

Sakura-cha (salted cherry blossom tea) is a Japanese tea that is traditionally served at celebrations such as wedding ceremonies. The production of Sakura-cha includes the immersion of cherry blossom flowers in Japanese plum vinegar, and through this process, the byproduct (plum vinegar extract of cherry blossom) is obtained. In this study, the antioxidant activity of the plum vinegar extract of cherry blossom was examined. The plum vinegar extract of cherry blossom had a greater superoxide anion scavenging activity compared with red wine, which is a well-known strong antioxidant. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis showed that cyanidin-3-glucoside, cyanidin-3-rutinoside, and caffeic acid were the major components in the phenolic extract prepared from plum vinegar extract of cherry blossom, and they possessed superoxide anion scavenging activity. Caffeic acid is mainly responsible for the scavenging activity of phenolic extract; the contributions of cyanidin-3-glucoside and cyanidin-3-rutinoside were minor. 相似文献

A feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of fermented soybean meal and scallop by-product blend (3:2) (FP) on
the performance of juvenile red sea bream. Five isocaloric diets were prepared by replacing 0% (FP0), 15% (FP15), 30% (FP30),
45% (FP45), and 60% (FP60) fishmeal (FM) protein with FP, respectively. Triplicate groups of fish (initial mean weight 2.83 g)
were fed the test diets for 45 days in a flowthrough seawater system. The results demonstrated that growth rates of fish fed
FP0, FP15, and FP30 were similar, and significantly higher (P < 0.05) than those of FP45 and FP60. Nutrient utilization was significantly lower in FP60, with no differences found among
the other groups. Dietary heavy-metal contents were affected by inclusion of FP, impacting on whole-body heavy-metal contents.
In terms of oxidative stress, fish fed the FP30 diet were in the best condition, since this fish group showed the least oxidative-stressed
condition as well as the highest tolerance against oxidation. In conclusion, the approach of utilizing this fermented mixture
is promising and it could replace at least 30% FM protein in red sea bream diet without negative effects on performance, body
