White tail disease of the farmed freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, is the cause of mortalities in the French West Indies, China and India. Two different sized particles, both developing in the cytoplasm of target cells, are found associated with diseased animals. These two viruses were separated, purified and subsequently characterized. The larger one, called MrNV, is icosahedral in shape and 27 nm in diameter. Its genome is composed of two fragments of linear single-stranded RNA (ss-RNA), of 2.9 and 1.3 kb, respectively and its capsids exhibited a single polypeptide of 43 kDa. These characteristics and the partial sequence of a cloned fragment of RNA-1 suggest this agent is a member of the family Nodaviridae, but with differences from both the genera Alphanodavirus and Betanodavirus. The smaller virus, named XSV, is icosahedral in shape, 15 nm in diameter, possesses a linear ss-RNA genome of about 0.9 kb, and its capsid exhibits two polypeptides of 16 and 17 kDa, respectively. Summary

Chilli plants cv. Pusa Jwala were inoculated in the nursery beds with three mycorrhizal fungi, Gigaspora calospora, G. margarita and Glomus fasciculatum and transplanted to plots supplied with 0, 25 and 50% of a recommended P level (65 kg ha?1). Uninoculated plants were also transplanted at 0 (Control) and 100% of.the recommended P level. Plant growth, height, shoot dry weight, uptake of P, root colonization and yield of green chillies were measured. Chilli responded well to inoculation and P. G. margarita best improved growth and yield. Inoculation plus 25 and 50% P were equally better than the control and equal to uninoculated plants at 100% P. As much as 50–75% P can be dispensed with by inoculation with mycorrhizal fungi and this represents a considerable economic saving in cost.  相似文献

The anatomical characteristics and density of wood were examined in 23-year-old Acacia mangium trees that had been planted in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The seeds had been collected from trees of five different provenances. The distance from the pith of the boundary between juvenile and mature wood was also examined to clarify the maturity of the wood. Lengths of wood fibers near the pith and the distance from the pith of the boundary between juvenile and mature wood differed significantly among provenances. By contrast, other anatomical characteristics of the wood such as fiber wall area, fiber wall thickness, fiber diameter, vessel lumen area, vessel diameter, vessel frequency and wood density did not differ significantly among provenances. Wood density was strongly correlated with the area of fiber walls. Our observations suggest that Sidei and Daintree might be more appropriate provenances among those examined for the Acacia mangium tree-breeding programs in Indonesia that are aimed at improving wood quality, because these provenances are associated with longer initial wood fibers and narrower juvenile areas than the other provenances studied.  相似文献

Soil contaminated by chromium (Cr) is a major concern for sustainable agriculture. Considering this as a basis, the present study was designed to isolate Cr(VI)-reducing and plant growth-promoting bacterial strain from contaminated sampling sources. In this study, Rhizobium strain ND2 was isolated from the root nodules of Phaseolus vulgaris grown in leather industrial effluent contaminated soil. The strain ND2 exhibited strong resistance to different heavy metals and reduced 30 and 50 µg ml?1 concentrations of Cr(VI) completely after 80 and 120 h of incubation, respectively, as well as chromium adsorption and immobilization were confirmed by scanning electron microscopic equipped with energy X-ray spectroscopy. In addition, the strain produced 21.73 and 36.86 µg ml?1 of indole-3-acetic acid at 50 and 100 µg ml?1 of L-tryptophan supplimentations, respectively. Strain ND2 positively affected the exo-polysaccharide, ammonia, protease and catalase production and stimulated root length of various test crops under Cr(VI) stress. Moreover, Rhizobium strain ND2 has the potential to colonize the diverse agricultural crops. Thus, the present findings strongly suggested that the multipotential properties of ND2 could be exploited for bioremediation of contaminated sites with Cr(VI) as well as potential bio fertilizer for enhancing the agricultural productivity.  相似文献

Lignocellulosic material from trees has great potential to form the basis of the second generation for bioethanol production because trees produce most of the biomass on the earth. We modified the wall structure of sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria) through overexpression of poplar cellulase in the cell walls. The overexpression did not decrease cellulose content but caused a decrease in xyloglucan bound to the walls. The level of saccharification and successive ethanol production was increased in the wood of the transgenic sengon overexpressing poplar cellulase compared with that of the wild type plant, and even after delignification of the wood. We propose that a xyloglucan intercalated into cellulose microfibrils could be one of the recalcitrant components in the saccharification of lignocelluloses.  相似文献

Tilapia lake virus (TiLV) is a highly contagious pathogen that has detrimental effects on tilapia farming. This virus was discovered in 2014 and has received tremendous global attention from the aquaculture sector due to its association with high fish mortalities and its strong economic impact on the tilapia aquaculture industry. Currently, TiLV has been reported in 16 countries, and this number is continuing to rise due to improved diagnostic assays and surveillance activities around the world. In this review, we summarize the up-to-date knowledge of TiLV with regard to TiLV host species, the clinical signs of a TiLV infection, the affected tissues, pathogenesis and potential disease risk factors. We also describe the reported information concerning the virus itself: its morphology, genetic make-up and transmission pathways. We review the current methods for virus detection and potential control measures. We close the review of the TiLV story so far, by offering a commentary on the major TiLV research gaps, why these are delaying future TiLV research and why the TiLV field needs to come together and proceed as a more collaborative scientific community if there is any hope limiting the impact of this serious virus.  相似文献

Tree improvement programs for teak (Tectona grandis) have mainly focused on breeding of trees with superior growth characteristics. However, improvement in wood quality should be included in breeding programs for high yield and high quality timber. In the present study, growth characteristics [stem diameter (D), tree height (H), and bole volume (V)], stress-wave velocity (SWV), and Pilodyn penetration (Py) were measured for 15 clones of 12-year-old teak trees planted at two different sites in Indonesia to clarify the variations in tree growth characteristics, SWV, and Py among clones, their repeatability, interaction between genotype and environment, and correlations between measured characteristics. Significant differences of all measured characteristics were found among 15 clones at both sites. Their repeatability showed relatively moderate to high values in both sites. These results indicate that these characteristics are closely related to genetic factors. Significant interaction between genotype and environment was found in all measured characteristics. In addition, SWV and Py showed lower interaction between genotype and environment than growth characteristics. No significant correlation was found between growth characteristics and SWV. These results suggest that wood properties and growth characteristics of teak trees can be improved by application of an appropriate tree breeding program.  相似文献

Recalcitrance to saccharifi cation is a major limiting factor of the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to ethanol. Levels of wood saccharification and subsequent ethanol production were higher in transgenic mangium (Acacia mangium) trees overexpressing xyloglucanase than in wild-type plants, even after delignification of the wood. We propose that a decrease in the quantity of xyloglucan that is intercalated into cellulose microfibrils could facilitate the process of saccharification.  相似文献
