Purpose

Discharge of untreated domestic and industrial waste in many European rivers resulted in low oxygen concentrations and contamination with trace metals, often concentrated in sediments. Under these anoxic conditions, the formation of insoluble metal sulfides is known to reduce metal availability. Nowadays, implementation of waste water treatment plants results in increasing surface water oxygen concentrations. Under these conditions, sediments can be turned from a trace metal sink into a trace metal source.

Materials and methods

In an ex situ experiment with metal contaminated sediment, we investigated the effect of surface water aeration on sediment metal sulfide (acid volatile sulfides (AVS)) concentrations and sediment metal release to the surface water. These results were compared with long-term field data, where surface water oxygen and metal concentrations, before and after the implementation of a waste water treatment plant, were compared.

Results and discussion

Aeration of surface water in the experimental setup resulted in a decrease of sediment AVS concentrations due to sulfide oxidation. Metals, known to precipitate with these sulfides, became more mobile and increasing dissolved metal (arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu)) concentrations in the surface water were observed. Contrary to As, Cd, or Cu, manganese (Mn) surface water concentrations decreased in the aerated treatment. Mn ions will precipitate and accumulate in the sediment as Mn oxides under the oxic conditions. Field data, however, demonstrated a decrease of all total metal surface water concentrations with increasing oxygen concentrations following the implementation of the waste water treatment plant.

Conclusions

The gradual decrease in surface water metal concentrations in the river before the treatment started and the removal of metals in the waste water treatment process could not be countered by an increase in metal flux from the sediment as observed in the experiment.  相似文献

The integrated relationship in a simple mechanistic model between the critical environmental factors controlling leaf photosynthesis of understory species would be a useful tool to optimize the management of the silvopastoral systems. Individual effect of leaf temperature, water stress and light environment over net maximum photosynthetic rate (Pmax) was evaluated on Festuca pallescens leaves grown in a silvopastoral system of two Pinus ponderosa canopy covers (350 and 500 trees ha−1) and natural grassland. The aim was to integrate individual functions for Pmax against these environmental factors into a multiplicative model. We measured pre-dawn water potential (ψ pd), leaf temperature and net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (gs) and intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) as a function of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). The highest Pmax under non-limiting conditions was 20.4 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 and was defined as standardized dimensionless Pmax s  = 1 for comparison of environmental factors. The leaf temperature function showed an optimum range between 20.2 and 21.8°C where Pmax s  = 1. Then, Pmax s declined by an average 1 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 C−1 from the optimum to 4.7 and 38.5°C. Pmax s decreased at a rate of 9.49 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 MPa−1 as water potential reaches −1.9 MPa and showed a lower slope as water potential decreased down to −4.3 MPa. The light environment was estimated from hemispherical photograph analysis. Pmax s was 20% higher in leaves of open control plants than under the maximum tree canopy cover. The simple multiplicative model accounted for 0.82 of the variation in Pmax. Such a simple mechanistic model is the first step towards a more effective decision support tool.  相似文献

Surveillance of wheat rust pathogens, including assessments of rust incidence and virulence characterization via either trap plots or race (pathotype) surveys, has provided information fundamental in formulating and adopting appropriate national and international policies, investments and strategies in plant protection, plant breeding, seed systems, and in rust pathogen research. Despite many successes from national and regional co-ordination of rust surveillance, few attempts were made to extend rust surveillance to international or even global levels. The Global Cereal Rust Monitoring System was established to address this deficiency. It is underpinned by an information platform that includes standardized protocols for methods and systems used in surveys, preliminary virulence testing, data, sample transmission and management at the field and national and global levels, and includes two web-based visualization tools. While considerable progress has been made towards a global system for monitoring variability in the wheat stem rust pathogen, and linking this to the threat posed by this pathogen to regional wheat production, some challenges remain, including ongoing commitment to support rust surveillance, and the ability to share and compare surveillance data.  相似文献
