Experiments have been carried out in northern Nigeria to study the deposition and drift of the small spray droplets (70–130 μ v.m.d.), utilised in the application of carbaryl plus an indicating dye, to cotton, at very low volume rates (6–12 litre/ha) using water-based formulations and at ultralow volume rates (3 litre/ha) using waterless formulations. The character of the deposition and extent of drift have been shown to relate to spray droplet size, formulation and a combination of meteorological factors. Practical recommendations have been evolved for very low volume and ultralow volume techniques in which the time of application is restricted to those periods of the day which favour high recovery.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this retrospective study was to report the incidence of posterior capsule disruption during routine phacoemulsification and to document the postoperative outcomes and complications in eyes with posterior capsule disruption compared with eyes with intact posterior capsules. PROCEDURES: Records of 143 dogs (244 eyes) were reviewed. Data collected included whether the posterior capsule was disrupted, whether the disruption was planned or accidental, whether an intraocular lens was implanted, and visual outcome. Records were reviewed for postoperative complications. Intraocular lens implantation rates, complication rates, and visual outcomes were compared between intact and disrupted posterior capsule groups using Chi-square analyses. RESULTS: The posterior capsule was disrupted in 33/244 eyes (14%). Planned capsulotomies accounted for 36% of the disruptions. Intraocular lenses were implanted in 76% of eyes without a disruption of the posterior capsule and in 31% of eyes with a posterior capsule disruption. Intraocular lenses were more likely to be implanted in eyes with a planned disruption of the posterior capsule (7/12; 58%) than in eyes with an accidental disruption (3/20; 15%). There were no significant differences in postoperative complications or visual outcome between eyes with posterior capsule disruption and those without. CONCLUSIONS: The most significant complication of posterior capsule disruption during phacoemulsification is the inability to implant an intraocular lens. Intraocular lenses are more likely to be placed in eyes with intentional disruptions of the posterior capsule than those with accidental ruptures.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The first characterization of alterations in whole-plant photosynthetic rate and carbon assimilation of bell peppers associated with infection by Pythium aphanidermatum is described. Relationships of root disease caused by P. aphanidermatum to whole-plant net carbon exchange rate (NCER), total carbon accumulation, dark respiration rates, water loss, and destructive growth parameters were quantified in vegetative, hydroponically grown pepper plants (Capsicum annuum 'Cubico'). Inoculated plants displayed lower whole-plant NCER. This translated into a loss of 28% in cumulative C gain during 7 days after inoculation and occurred before visible shoot symptoms developed. Leaf area and dry weight of shoots and roots were significantly decreased and the shoot/root ratio was higher in inoculated plants than in noninoculated plants. We propose that reduced NCER in inoculated plants was mainly due to restricted development of leaf area, because no differences in NCER and evapotranspiration were observed between control and inoculated plants when expressed based on leaf area and root dry mass, respectively. These findings indicate that Pythium infection did not affect the photosynthetic apparatus directly and that the reductions in photosynthesis and growth were not caused by inefficient water transport by diseased roots. These results enlarge on the understanding of physiological responses of host plants to early stages of root disease.  相似文献

The mammalian sperm membrane undergoes cholesterol efflux during maturation and fertilization. Although ATP‐binding cassette (ABC) transporters are known to transport cholesterol through cell membranes in other organs, their presence in canine testis, epididymis and sperm has not been proven to date. Hence, the aim of the present study was to localize the ABC transporters ABCA1 and ABCG1 in canine testicular and epididymidal tissue as well as in spermatozoa membranes. To this end, semen samples from 12 dogs as well as testicles and epididymides of four young and healthy dogs were prepared for immunohistochemistry, respectively. Capacitation and acrosome reaction (AR) were induced in aliquots of the semen samples before immunostaining to assess changes in the expression of ABCA1 and ABCG1. Evaluation by confocal microscopy revealed the presence of both ABCA1 and ABCG1 in canine testicles and of ABCA1 in the epididymides. In spermatozoa, only ABCA1 immunoreactivity was detected, mainly in the region of the acrosome and midpiece. After induction of capacitation, ABCA1 signal persisted in the acrosome but disappeared after AR, indicating a loss of ABCA1 with the loss of the acrosome. We conclude that ABCA1 and ABCG1 are expressed in canine testis, whereas only ABCA1 is expressed in epididymis and spermatozoa membrane, both transporters probably contributing to the regulation of membrane cholesterol content.  相似文献

There has been a recent increase in the frequency and extent of wildfires in interior Alaska, and this trend is predicted to continue under a warming climate. Although less well documented, corresponding increases in fire severity are expected. Previous research from boreal forests in Alaska and western Canada indicate that severe fire promotes the recruitment of deciduous tree species and decreases the relative abundance of black spruce (Picea mariana) immediately after fire. Here we extend these observations by (1) examining changes in patterns of aspen and spruce density and biomass that occurred during the first two decades of post-fire succession, and (2) comparing patterns of tree composition in relation to variations in post-fire organic layer depth in four burned black spruce forests in interior Alaska after 10-20 years of succession. We found that initial effects of fire severity on recruitment and establishment of aspen and black spruce were maintained by subsequent effects of organic layer depth and initial plant biomass on plant growth during post-fire succession. The proportional contribution of aspen (Populus tremuloides) to total stand biomass remained above 90% during the first and second decades of succession in severely burned sites, while in lightly burned sites the proportional contribution of aspen was reduced due to a 40-fold increase in spruce biomass in these sites. Relationships between organic layer depth and stem density and biomass were consistently negative for aspen, and positive or neutral for black spruce in all four burns. Our results suggest that initial effects of post-fire organic layer depths on deciduous recruitment are likely to translate into a prolonged phase of deciduous dominance during post-fire succession in severely burned stands. This shift in vegetation distribution has important implications for climate-albedo feedbacks, future fire regime, wildlife habitat quality and natural resources for indigenous subsistence activities in interior Alaska.  相似文献
