This experiment was carried out in the framework of a project to develop a viable fish polyculture technology under Bangladeshi conditions that allows simultaneous fish production of small indigenous species for the farmers' family consumption and of large carp species as a cash crop. The objectives of this experiment were to assess the effects on fish performance and on the environment of adding 20% large fish to the basic ‘cash crop’ carp–small fish polyculture consisting of 10 000 fish ha?1 of the large carp rohu Labeo rohita (Hamilton), catla Catla catla (Hamilton) and common carp Cyprinus carpio (L.) at a species ratio 1:1:1, and 15 000 fish ha?1 of each small indigenous fish punti Puntius sophore (Hamilton) and mola Amblypharyngodon mola (Hamilton) (control). The treatment ponds were stocked with additional 2000 large fish ha?1, either all rohu, or all catla, or all common carp, or half rohu and half common carp, or half catla and half common carp. The results obtained and the analysis of interactions through the food web that affect food resource availability of the different fish species and account for the trends and differences observed among treatments confirm the positive effect of common carp on rohu reported in previous experiments and show that a 20% increase in large carps stocking neither affect the survival of the large carps nor reduce harvesting biomass of the small fish for the farmer's family consumption. Increased stocking densities of each large carp species did not significantly reduce its own harvesting weight and mean growth rate, while significantly increased rohu and catla (but not common carp) harvesting biomass and yield. The complex relations between species led to inter‐ and intraspecific competition, which in some treatments increased growth or yield of one species and in other treatments of other species, so that the gains on one species and the losses on the other led to no significant total harvested biomass differences between treatments. Yet, the results herein reported may help farmers to select their species stocking ratios. Thus, if the main target of the farmer is rohu, then a stocking density increase of 10% common carp and 10% rohu would improve rohu growth rate (due to common carp) and result in 50% higher rohu harvesting biomass and yield. If the main target of the farmer is catla, then a 20% increase in catla stocking density would lead to 20% higher catla harvesting biomass.  相似文献

The present study aims to assess the impact of improved management practices on productivity, profit, and consumption expenditure of carp farmers. This study was carried out in three of Bangladesh’s top carp-producing districts (administrative units). A total of 300 carp farmers were surveyed through face-to-face interviews. Data were analyzed with propensity score matching (PSM), inverse probability weighting (IPW), and inverse probability weighted regression adjustment (IPWRA). Improved management practices, such as improved fingerling variety, stocking density, feeding, pond water change, lime application, and proper drainage facilities, were considered to achieve the study’s objectives. Improved management practices were classified into simple, intermediate, and complex practices based on their complexity. Adopters of improved management practices achieved significantly higher productivity (248–299 kg ha?1) based on various matching techniques compared to non-adopters. The impact of adoption on profitability and consumption expenditure was 22% and 34% on the basis of IPW. Due to higher productivity and profit, adopters were able to spend more on consumption. Findings also revealed that adopting simple management practice is insufficient to boost productivity and profit. More research is needed to develop and optimize the improved management practices as a package. Improvement in extension services is suggested to improve the adoption.

The amount of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR, 0.4–0.7 μm) absorbed by plants for photosynthesis relative to incident radiation is defined as the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (fAPAR). This is an important variable in both plant biomass production and plant growth modeling. This study investigates the application of a newly developed, linear irradiance sensor (LightScout Quantum Bar Sensor, LightScout, Spectrum Technologies, Inc. USA), to quantify fAPAR for a demonstrator crop, Triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack). A protocol was devised for sensor placement to determine reflected PAR components of fAPAR and to determine the optimal time of day and sensor orientation for data collection. Coincident, top of canopy, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) measurements were also acquired with a CropCircle? ACS-210 sensor and measurements correlated with derived fAPAR values. The optimum height of the linear irradiance sensor above soil or plant canopy was found to be 0.4 m while measuring reflected PAR. Measurement of fAPAR was found to be stable when conducted within 1 h of local solar noon in order to avoid significant bidirectional effects resulting from diurnal changes of leaf orientation relative to the vertically-placed sensor. In the row crop studied, averaging fAPAR readings derived from the linear irradiance sensor orientated across and along the plant row provided an R2 = 0.81 correlation with above-canopy NDVI. Across row sensor orientation also gave a similar correlation of R2 = 0.76 allowing the user to reduce sampling time.  相似文献

Buffalo is an economically important dairy animal in South Asia but mostly ignored in research priorities. In this retrospective study, the effect of management practices and age of animal on the incidence of mastitis in Nili Ravi buffaloes was investigated. A total of 1,560 quarters of buffaloes (n?=?390) were screened by visual examination of the udder and milk (clinical mastitis) and California mastitis test (subclinical mastitis). Household data was collected on a predesigned questionnaire and analyzed. The prevalence of subclinical mastitis, clinical mastitis, and blind quarters was 41.8, 13.6, and 9.7 %, respectively. The highest prevalence was noted in the hind quarters and left side as compared to that in the forequarters and right side. This data significantly (p?p?p?R 2?=?0.772) with mastitis. This study concluded that some factors alone or in combination with other factors influence significantly the occurrence of mastitis, and to minimize the infection, these factors should be considered. The outcome of the study will be valuable for policy-making for positive management practices and implementation of preventive measures.  相似文献

The population abundance of free-living and plant-parasitic nematodes was investigated in a long-term rotation/tillage/stubble management experiment at Wagga Wagga Agricultural Institute, New South Wales (NSW), Australia. The treatments were a combination of two crop rotations: wheat (Triticum aestivum)–wheat and wheat–lupin (Lupinus angustifolius); two tillage systems: conventional cultivation (CC) and direct drill (DD); and two stubble management practices: stubble retention (SR) and stubble burnt (SB). Plots of one of the wheat–wheat treatments received urea at 100 kg N ha−1 during the cropping season. Soil samples from 0–5 and 5–10 cm depths were collected in September (maximum tillering), October (flowering) and December (after harvest), 2001, to analyse nematode abundance. Soil collected in September was also analysed for concentrations of total and labile C, and pH levels.Three nematode trophic groups, namely bacteria-feeders (primarily Rhabditidae), omnivores (primarily Dorylaimidae excluding plant-parasites and predators) and plant-parasites (Pratylenchus spp. and Paratylenchus spp.) were recorded in each soil sample. Of them, bacteria-feeders (53–99%, population range 933–2750 kg−1 soil) dominated in all soil samples. There was no difference in nematode abundance and community composition between the 0–5 cm and 5–10 cm layers of soil. The mean population of free-living and plant-parasitic nematodes varied significantly between the treatments in all sampling months. In most cases, total free-living nematode densities (Rhabditidae and Dorylaimidae) were significantly (P < 0.001) greater in wheat–lupin rotation than the wheat–wheat rotation irrespective of tillage and stubble management practices. In contrast, a greater population of plant-parasitic nematodes was recorded from plots with wheat–wheat than the wheat–lupin rotation. For treatments with wheat–wheat, total plant-parasitic nematode (Pratylenchus spp. and Paratylenchus spp.) densities were greater in plots without N-fertiliser (295–741 kg−1 soil) than the plots with N-fertiliser (14–158 kg−1 soil).Tillage practices had significant (P < 0.05) effects mostly on the population densities of plant-parasitic nematodes while stubble management had significant effects (P < 0.05) on free-living nematodes. However, interaction effects of tillage and stubble were significant (P < 0.01) for the population densities of free-living nematodes only. Population of Rhabditidae was significantly higher in conventional cultivated plots (7244 kg−1 soil) than the direct drilled (3981 kg−1 soil) plots under stubble retention. In contrast, plots with direct drill and stubble burnt had significantly higher populations of Dorylaimidae than the conventional cultivation with similar stubble management practice. No correlations between abundance of free-living nematodes, and concentration of total C and labile C in soil were observed in this study. These results showed that stubble retention contributed for enormous population density of free-living (beneficial) nematodes while conventional cultivation, irrespective of stubble management, contributed for suppressing plant-parasitic nematodes.  相似文献

The potential of encapsulated calcium carbide (ECC) in improving growth, yield and physiology of cotton under salinity was evaluated in pot experiment. Salinity was induced by sodium chloride (NaCl) at 0, 1250 and 2000 ppm. The ECC was applied at the rate of 0, 15, and 30 mg kg?1 soil. The results revealed that ECC improved number of branches, yield, shoot dry biomass, root dry biomass, by 57, 67, 40, 22, and 18% respectively, over control. Similarly, net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (N, P and K) concentration of shoot were enhanced by 38, 34, 7, 25 and 11% over control, respectively. The induction of new set of proteins ranging from 11 to 26 kDa was also observed at various levels of ECC and salinity stress. These results proved the efficacy of very lower concentrations of ethylene produced by ECC and showed the behavior of different parameters of cotton to it under saline stress.  相似文献

A field experiment was carried out to elucidate the effect of chicken manure (CM) and effective microorganisms (EM) on the yield of corn and chemical and microbial properties of acidic wetland soils. A split-split plot experimental design with three replications was used in this research. The main plot consisted of two types of soil. The sub-plot was for the application of CM, while the sub-sub plot was for the application of EM. Sweet corn seeds were planted and cultivated until harvest. Above ground plant biomass and round of the stem of an ear of corn were observed. Soil samples were taken and analyzed for chemical and microbial properties. The results showed that the interaction between soil types and CM application affected the corn yield, while EM had no effect. Similarly, the chemical and microbial characteristics of soils used were affected by soil type and the application of CM, while the effect of EM was not clear.  相似文献

A new method is described for detection of pork and lard as adulterants in processed beef and mutton mixtures. The unsaturated triglycerides in the fat are ozonized and then derivatized. The mixture of derivatized and saturated triglycerides is analyzed by liquid chromatography using a reverse-phase column and a UV detector. Pork fat has larger amounts of triglyceride containing saturated fatty acid at the C-2 position than does the fat of other meat. The ratio of triglyceride containing saturated fatty acid vs triglyceride containing unsaturated fatty acid at the same (C-2) position (SSU/SUS) in a sample is compared with those of pure meats. The presence of pork in the sample causes the ratio to increase compared with ratios for pure beef or mutton. The increase in the SSU/SUS ratio is significant for the addition of 1% pork in beef. In the case of mutton, the addition of 3% pork causes a noticeable change. The method is reliable and is also applicable to samples containing only fat. Processing (heating or cooking) does not affect the ratios.  相似文献

A study was carried out to evaluate the influence of single or dual inoculation with Glomus mosseae and Azorhizobium caulinodans with and without rock phosphate on the growth of and N, P and K accumulation in Sesbania rostrata grown in sterilized soil. Height of plants inoculated with G. mosseae in combination with A. caulinadans and/or rock phosphate was significantly higher than that of uninoculated plants or plants inoculated with A. caulinodans alone before but not after 28 days. However, the oven-dry weight of shoots and roots from all treatments did not vary significantly. Generally, concentration and uptake of N and P but not K in shoots and roots of plants were improved by dual inoculation with G. mosseae and A. caulinodans plus or minus P. Mycorrhizal infection of roots was enhanced significantly by A. caulinodans. Received: 18 March 1996  相似文献
