We compared heat production (HP) and plasma lipid metabolites between meat‐ and egg‐types of Nagoya breed chickens during embryonic development. To investigate HP and respiratory quotient, oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production were measured using an open‐circuit calorimeter system. HP was significantly lower in meat‐ than in egg‐type chickens during embryonic development, and HP gradually decreased with developmental stage in both types. The respiratory quotient was constant at approximately 0.68 at every embryonic stage investigated, and the value was similar in both types. Plasma concentrations of triacylglycerol, nonesterified fatty acid, glycerol and D‐3‐hydroxybutyrate, which are associated with lipid metabolism, were similar in both types during embryonic development. These results demonstrate that chicken embryos selected for rapid growth of Nagoya breed have characteristic lower HP, and that when selecting chickens for rapid growth, HP is an important parameter during embryonic stages. 相似文献

A Bengal tiger was presented for evaluation of weakness, ataxia and inappetance. Computed
tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a mass extending from the
T7-8 vertebral body to the left rib and compressing the spinal cord. On CT, the bone
destruction and sequestrum were shown. On MRI, the multilobulated mass appeared hypo- to
isointense in T1-weighted and hyperintense in T2-weighted images. The tiger died after
imaging, most likely from renal failure. Chordoma without metastasis was diagnosed on
necropsy. The imaging characteristics were similar to those found in chordoma in humans.
This report describes the use of CT and MRI in an exotic species. 相似文献

The Exaltation of Newcastle disease virus (END) phenomenon is induced by the
inhibition of type I interferon in pestivirus-infected cells in vitro,
via proteasomal degradation of cellular interferon regulatory factor (IRF)-3 with the
property of the viral autoprotease protein Npro. Reportedly, the amino acid
residues in the zinc-binding TRASH motif of Npro determine the difference in
characteristics between END-phenomenon-positive (END+) and
END-phenomenon-negative (END−) classical swine fever viruses (CSFVs). However,
the basic mechanism underlying this function in bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) has not
been elucidated from the genomic differences between END+ and END−
viruses using reverse genetics till date. In the present study, comparison of complete
genome sequences of a pair of END+ and END− viruses isolated from
the same virus stock revealed that there were only four amino acid substitutions (D136G,
I2623V, D3148G and D3502Y) between two viruses. Based on these differences, viruses with
and without mutations at these positions were generated using reverse genetics. The END
assay, measurements of induced type I interferon and IRF-3 detection in cells infected
with these viruses revealed that the aspartic acid at position 136 in the zinc-binding
TRASH motif of Npro was required to inhibit the production of type I interferon
via the degradation of cellular IRF-3, consistently with CSFV. 相似文献

A three-dimensional internal structure microscopy (3D-ISM) can clarify the anatomical
arrangement of internal structures of equine ovaries. In this study, morphological changes
of the equine ovary over the first 12 months of life were investigated by 3D-ISM in 59
fillies and by histological analysis in 2 fillies. The weight and volume of the paired
ovaries initially decreased from 0 to 1 months to 2 to 3 months of age and then
significantly increased at 8 to 12 months of age. The ovulation fossa was first observed
around the 3rd month and became evident after the 6th month. The number of follicles with
a diameter of ≥10 mm and the diameter of the largest follicle increased gradually after 6
months of age. On a volume basis, the medulla accounted for nearly 90% of the whole ovary
at 0 to 1 months of age, but significantly decreased from 2 to 3 months of age. The volume
of the cortex increased progressively after birth and reached approximately 60% of the
total volume at 8 to 12 months of age. This significant development of the cortex
coincided with the increased number and size of large follicles observed from 6 months of
age. These results suggest that the development of the cortex plays a role in the
maturation of the follicles and the equine ovary undergoes substantial morphological

Redflower ragleaf (Crassocephalum crepidioides) is a weed, as well as a minor vegetable, in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The influence of environmental factors and seed conditions on the germination and emergence of redflower ragleaf have been evaluated in order to help understand its distribution and to develop effective management strategies. The seeds germinated at a constant temperature in the range of 10–30°C and reached a maximum at 15–20°C. The highest germination rate was recorded at an alternating temperature of 20/15°C (day/night). The seeds germinated over a wide pH range (2–12), with the highest germination rate at between 4 and 10. Germination under saturated and flooded conditions was also high. The germination of seeds from opened (mature) capitula was significantly higher than from partially opened or unopened capitula. The germination of seeds without a pappus was significantly higher than for seeds with a pappus. The germination rate of 1 year old seeds decreased drastically when compared to that of freshly harvested seeds. The seedling emergence rate was ~63% for those seeds placed on the soil surface, but no seedling emerged from a depth of ≥1 cm. These results indicate that redflower ragleaf seeds can germinate in various environmental conditions, but that the percentage that germinates will be different in different environments. Regeneration could be effectively prevented by at least a 1 cm soil covering or by destroying the plant before the capitula open. In contrast, freshly harvested seeds from opened capitula should be sown on the soil surface when redflower ragleaf is to be cultivated as a vegetable. 相似文献

Immunohistochemical localization of orexin/hypocretin in the brain of a pleuronectiform fish, the barfin flounder Verasper moseri was examined as the first step in unraveling the possible function of the hormone in the brain. Orexin-A-like immunoreactive
(ir) cell bodies were found to be located in the nucleus posterioris periventricularis (NPPv) of the hypothalamus, and orexin-A-like-ir
fibers were detected not only in the hypothalamus but also extensively throughout the brain. The orexin-A-like-ir cell bodies
did not project their fibers to the pituitary gland. Since melaninconcentrating hormone (MCH) and α-melanocyte-stimulating
hormone (α-MSH) are suggested to regulate food intake in addition to orexin/hypocretin in the teleost fish, it was examined
whether neural connections exist between orexin neurons and the MCH and α-MSH neurons in the barfin flounder brain by using
double-staining immunohistochemistry. Some orexin-A-like-ir fibers were in close contact with the MCH-ir and α-MSH-ir cell
bodies in the hypothalamus. Moreover, a few MCH-ir and α-MSH-ir fibers were in close contact with the orexin-A-like-ir cell
bodies in the hypothalamus. These results suggest that reciprocal connections exist between the orexin and MCH neurons and

Although feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) distresses of many cats, its pathogenesis is unknown and the diagnosis is challenging. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are metabolized into various lipid mediators. Lipid mediators such as prostaglandins (PGs) modulate inflammation and many of them are excreted into the urine. Thus, the investigation of the urinary lipid profile may reveal pathogenesis and help diagnosis of FIC. We collected urine samples from five FIC cats by spontaneous urination and analyzed 158 types of lipid mediators in urines using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The urinary levels of PUFAs were higher in FIC compared to those of the healthy group. The excretions of a major inflammatory mediator, PGD2, were less in FIC. Other well-known inflammatory mediators such as PGE2, PGI2, and their metabolites did not show a difference. In contrast, the levels of PGF2α and its 2 metabolites and PGF3α were higher in FIC. Slit, a secreted protein, functions as a chemorepellent factor in axon guidance and neuronal migration and as an inhibitor in leukocyte chemotaxis. In humans, slit2 protein attracts endothelial cells and promotes tube formation in the tumor angiogenic mechanism. In this study, we cloned a part of the canine slit subfamily and examined the expression of slit subfamily mRNAs in 3 normal canine mammary glands and 11 mammary tumor samples by RT-PCR. The cloned part of the slit gene sequences showed high similarity to those of the human, mouse, and rat. The mRNAs were expressed at low levels in the normal mammary gland. The expression levels of slit1 mRNA were low in both the normal and tumor tissues. In contrast, the expression of slit2 mRNA increased in most of the malignant mammary tumors, and an increase in slit3 mRNA expression was observed in 2 of the malignant mixed tumors. These results suggest that the expression of slit2 plays an important role in tumor angiogenesis in canine mammary gland tumors and that slit2 can be a putative marker for malignancy diagnosis of these tumors. 相似文献

A 5-month-old male Abyssinian presented with right hemiplegia. Cervical radiographs, haematology and serum biochemistry were normal. A foreign body was identified on computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Removal of the foreign body was carried out via a dorsal approach between the occipital bone and the C1 vertebral body using intra-operative CT. No complications were encountered.
