Fertilizer enhancers can provide economic and environmental benefits but their efficacy needs to be assessed appropriately. This study analyzed available trial results of three different fertilizer enhancer products to determine if the results support product claims. All available trial results were considered for a meta-analysis of each product. Product effect was calculated for each experiment in a manner that could be compared with manufacturer claims. The distribution of trial results was examined and factors that may have influenced results assessed. Previously published assessments of the products were compared. N-Boost biostimulant sprayed with dissolved urea increased pasture nitrogen response by an equivalent of 18.0 kg N/ha compared to urea alone in nitrogen-responsive and label-conditions trials. For SustaiN Green urease-inhibitor-treated urea, pasture nitrogen response was 50% higher than untreated urea if low-ammonia-volatilization-risk trials were excluded. AVAIL phosphate fertilizer enhancer increased crop yields by 4.1% over untreated fertilizer in fertilizer-responsive and non-high-soil-phosphate trials.  相似文献

Spider plant (Gynandropsis gynandra) is a traditional leafy vegetable widespread in sub-Saharan Africa and tropical Asia that is also valued for its medicinal properties. Developing a breeding program for the species requires detailed knowledge of its phenology, floral morphology and pollination system. This study investigates the effects of floral morphology and pollination mechanisms on the reproductive success in G. gynandra. The experiments were conducted in two locations in Benin. A split-plot design was used with four randomized complete blocks. Three accessions were randomly assigned to the whole plots and five treatments including natural self-pollination, hand self-pollination, geitonogamy, open pollination and hand cross-pollination were randomized over the sub-plots. We observed that individual plant exhibited 70% of staminate (male) flowers and 30% of hermaphrodite flowers. G. gynandra was andromonoecious. Open pollination and hand cross-pollination led to higher fruit and seed set. Natural self-pollination and hand self-pollination resulted in lower fruit and seed production. G. gynandra is a self-compatible and predominantly out-crossing species. Cross-pollination resulted in a significant increase in fruit set. This study set the ground for the development of improved cultivars in G. gynandra.  相似文献

Rewetting a dry soil has long been known to cause a burst of respiration (the “Birch Effect”). Hypothesized mechanisms for this involve: (1) release of cellular materials as a result of the rapid increase in water potential stress and (2) stimulating C-supply to microbes via physical processes. The balance of these factors is still not well understood, particularly in the contexts of multiple dry/wet cycles and of how resource and stress patterns vary through the soil profile. We evaluated the effects of multiple dry/wet cycles on surface and subsurface soils from a California annual grassland. Treatments included 4, 6, and 12 cycles that varied the length of the drying period between rewetting events. Respiration was monitored after each wetting event while extractable C and N, microbial biomass, and microbial activity were assayed initially, after the first rewetting event, and at the end of the experiment. Initially, microbial biomass and activity (respiration, dehydrogenase, and N mineralization) in subsurface soils were ca. 10% and 20% of surface soil levels. After multiple cycles, however, subsurface soil microbial biomass and activity were enhanced by up to 8-fold, even in comparison to the constantly moist treatment. By comparison, surface soil microbial biomass and activity were either moderately (i.e. 1.5 times increase) or not affected by wetting and drying. Drying and rewetting led to a cascade of responses (soluble C release, biomass growth, and enhanced activity) that mobilized and metabolized otherwise unavailable soil carbon, particularly in subsurface soils.  相似文献

Impacts of management and land use on soil bacterial diversity have not been well documented. Here we present the application of the bacterial tag encoded FLX amplicon pyrosequencing (bTEFAP) diversity method, which will promote studies in soil microbiomes. Using this modified FLX pyrosequencing approach we evaluated bacterial diversity of a soil (Pullman soil; fine, mixed, thermic Torrertic Paleustolls) with 38% clay and 34% sand (0–5 cm) under four systems. Two non-disturbed grass systems were evaluated including a pasture monoculture (Bothriochloa bladhii (Retz) S.T. Blake) [P] and a diverse mixture of grasses in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). Two agricultural systems were evaluated including a cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) -winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)-corn (Zea mays L.) rotation [Ct–W–Cr] and the typical practice of the region, which is continuous monoculture cotton (Ct–Ct). Differences due to land use and management were observed in soil microbial biomass C (CRP > P = Ct–W–Cr > Ct–Ct). Using three estimators of diversity, the maximum number of unique sequences operational taxonomic units (OTU; roughly corresponding to the species level) never exceeded 4500 in these soils at the 3% dissimilarity level. The following trend was found using the most common estimators of bacterial diversity: Ct–W–Cr > P = CRP > Ct–Ct. Predominant phyla in this soil were Actinobacteria, Bacteriodetes and Fermicutes. Bacteriodetes were more predominant in soil under agricultural systems (Ct–W–Cr and Ct–Ct) compared to the same soil under non-disturbed grass systems (P and CRP). The opposite trend was found for the Actinobacteria, which were more predominant under non-disturbed grass systems (P and CRP). Higher G? bacteria and lower G+ bacteria were found under Ct–W–Cr rotation and highest abundance of actinomycetes under CRP. The bTEFAP technique proved to be a powerful method to characterize the bacterial diversity of the soil studied under different management and land use in terms not only on the presence or absence, but also in terms of distribution.  相似文献

Casein fractions have been shown to act as molecular chaperones and inhibit aggregation of whey proteins in dilute solutions (< or =1% w/v). We evaluated if this approach would stabilize protein solutions at higher concentration and thermal processing temperatures desired for beverage applications. Mixtures of beta-lactoglobulin (BLG) (6% w/v) with either beta-casein (BCN) (0.01-2% w/v) or alpha s-casein (ACN) (2% w/v) were adjusted to pH 6.0 and heated (70-90 degrees C) for 20 min, cooled, and then analyzed to determine the degree of aggregation. Aggregation was determined by solution turbidity as optical density (OD) at 400 or 600 nm. The addition of 0.05% (w/v) BCN or greater caused a drop in turbidity for solutions heated at 70-90 degrees C. In contrast, inhibition was observed in BLG-ACN mixtures at 70 degrees C but not at > or =75 degrees C. Moreover, prolonged heating (90 min) of BLG with 2% (w/v) BCN (pH 6.0) at 90 degrees C produced a clear solution while BLG-ACN solutions formed translucent gels after heating for 15 min. The weight-averaged molar mass and root-mean-square (rms) radius of soluble aggregates were determined by size exclusion chromatography in conjunction with multiangle laser light scattering (SEC-MALS). SEC-MALS confirmed the turbidity results by showing that the BLG-BCN mixture (8% w/v protein) produced aggregates with lower molar mass and smaller rms radius (majority 20-40 nm). These results showed that BCN is a feasible component to stabilize higher concentrations of whey proteins in beverages.  相似文献

Fifty-five fall-born, Simmental-crossbred, male calves were allotted at birth to one of five treatments: bulls castrated at 5 mo and implanted from birth to slaughter (ST); bulls implanted from birth to slaughter (BI-BS); bulls implanted from birth to weaning (BI-BW); bulls implanted from weaning to slaughter (BI-WS) and non-implanted control bulls (CB). Implanted calves received 36 mg of zeranol at approximately 100-d intervals. Calves were fed a high-concentrate diet from 8.1 mo of age to an average slaughter age of 17 mo. Longissimus steaks (LS) were evaluated for palatability traits by both a trained sensory panel (TSP) and a take-home consumer panel (CP). Conclusions from both panels were similar. The TSP found LS from ST to be juicier (P less than .05) than LS from all bull groups, and to be more tender (P less than .05) than LS from BI-BW and BI-WS. The CP found LS from ST to be juicier, more tender and more acceptable (P less than .05) than LS from BI-BW, BI-WS and CB. Steaks from BI-BS were more tender (P less than .05) than LS from BI-WS and CB. Steaks from BI-BS and BI-BW had lower (P less than .05) shear values than LS from CB, but LS from ST had lower (P less than .05) shear values than LS from all bull groups.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A double-isotope single-injection method without urine collection for the estimation of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and effective renal plasma flow (ERPF) in dogs and cats was evaluated. The GFR was determined, using 14C-inulin and ERPF was determined, using [3H]tetraethylammonium bromide. Using a modified single exponential, 1-compartment mathematical model, the renal clearance of these solutes was estimated with a plasma radioactivity disappearance curve constructed from samples collected over a 150-minute time period. In 25 dogs, GFR, ERPF, and filtration fraction were 3.55 +/- 0.14 ml/kg/min, 10.51 +/- 0.72 ml/kg/min, and 0.34 +/- 0.02, respectively. In 25 cats, GFR, ERPF, and filtration fraction were 3.24 +/- 0.14 ml/kg/min, 8.14 +/- 0.53 ml/kg/min, and 0.39 +/- 0.02, respectively. This time-efficient and reliable method, using beta-emitting isotopes, yielded renal functional values well within the normal ranges reported by a variety of other isotopic and nonisotopic procedures. The advantages of the present procedure over previous double-isotope single-injection methods include the use of less costly, lower energy-using, and less penetrating beta emittors, as well as a shortened blood sampling schedule.  相似文献

The rate of gain, carcass measurements and three muscles were evaluated in 65 crossbred boars representing 13 litters that were allotted at 4 wk of age to slaughter weight and treatment groups as follows: 1) 105 kg, castrated; 2) 105 kg, intact; 3) 118 kg, intact; 4) 132 kg, intact and 5) 145 kg, intact. One barrow and four boars within a litter constituted a replicate and each replicate was penned separately. The growth rate of all boars to 105 kg constituted one group and was compared with the growth rate of barrows to 105 kg live body weight. Average daily gain from 4 wk until 105 kg did not differ significantly between boars and barrows. Growth rate of the boars continued at an increasing rate until they reached 87.3 kg live weight, while maximum daily gain of barrows occurred at 76.3 kg live weight or 11 kg less than that of boars. At 105 kg, boars had 31.3% less 10th rib backfat thickness and 2.9% greater carcass length than barrows, but longissimus muscle area did not differ. Barrows had greater backfat thickness at 105 kg than 145-kg boars. As live weight increased from 105 to 145 kg, carcass length, 10th rib backfat thickness and longissimus area of boars increased (P less than .01) linearly. Fat-free muscle weights of the brachialis (BR), semitendinosus (ST) and longissimus (L) did not differ between boars and barrows at 105 kg. Boars at 105 kg had 1.3 and 1.7% more moisture in the BR and ST, respectively, than barrows. Percentage protein, total intramuscular fat and fiber diameter in the BR, ST and L muscles did not differ between boars and barrows at 105 kg or with increasing live weight in boars. Total RNA increased linearly (P less than .05) in the BR and ST as boars increased in live weight from 105 to 145 kg.  相似文献
