There is suggestive evidence that a low status of ascorbic acid in camels enhances their risk for infectious diseases. This study was carried out to disclose the role of reproduction, if any, in affecting ascorbic acid status. The associations between the reproductive cycle and ascorbic acid contents in plasma and leukocytes were studied in Sudanese camels browsing on local vegetation. Ascorbic acid status was found to be lowest during pregnancy and highest during lactation. Estrus versus non-estrus was associated with high vitamin C status. Brucellosis-positive camels showed decreased levels of ascorbic acid in plasma and leukocytes. Possibly, the phases of non-estrus and pregnancy in camels invoke an increased susceptibility to infectious diseases due to a lower ascorbic acid status.  相似文献

Reduction of Phosphate sorption in soils by some organic compounds as dependent on pH 3 soils of pH 4.1, 5.9, and 7.1 were treated with aqueous solutions (at 3 concentrations) of 37 organic compounds (organic acids, phenolics, uronic acids, sugars); following an equilibration with 32P-diammonium phosphate the recovery of 32P was measured in the soil extract. All tested compounds did not show any effects at a concentration of 0.1 mg/g soil. Sugars, uronic acids, 2-keto-D-gluconic acid and most amino acids (with the exception of Glu, Asp, Cys, Phe which raised the recovery of 32P by 2 to 3%) were ineffective even at the highest rate (10 mg/g soil). Aromatic acids and phenolics increased the recovery to a greater extent (highest increases with gallic acid: 8 to 11% depending on the soil). Effects were greatest with aliphatic acids like citric acid (45 to 48%), isocitric acid (8 to 64%), malic acid (12 to 57%), and malonic acid (8 to 38%). Only these four acids as well as ascorbic and isoascorbic acid markedly increased the recovery of 32P even at a concentration of 1 mg/g soil. The effects of these acids (with the exception of malonic acid) decreased with increasing soil pH. By adding HCl to the soil in controls, it could be shown that the increased recovery rates of 32P were not caused by the decrease in pH.  相似文献

Cell-cell contacts are fundamental to multicellular organisms and are subject to exquisite levels of control. Human RPTPmu is a type IIB receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase that both forms an adhesive contact itself and is involved in regulating adhesion by dephosphorylating components of cadherin-catenin complexes. Here we describe a 3.1 angstrom crystal structure of the RPTPmu ectodomain that forms a homophilic trans (antiparallel) dimer with an extended and rigid architecture, matching the dimensions of adherens junctions. Cell surface expression of deletion constructs induces intercellular spacings that correlate with the ectodomain length. These data suggest that the RPTPmu ectodomain acts as a distance gauge and plays a key regulatory function, locking the phosphatase to its appropriate functional location.  相似文献

The physiological processes leading to the expression of the resilient phenotype, which allow animals to maintain a relatively higher production level during infection, have been investigated in lambs from a closed flock selected for 40 generations for high fleece weight (HFW), but with higher FEC and worm burdens than their unselected control (C) flock run in parallel. After recovery from surgery to implant abomasal cannulae, eight parasite-naïve lambs from each flock were infected intraruminally at 4.5 months-of-age with 50,000 Teladorsagia circumcincta L3. Blood, abomasal fluid and faecal samples were collected daily for measurement of serum gastrin and pepsinogen concentrations, blood eosinophils, abomasal pH and FEC. Four lambs from each flock were euthanased on Day 8 post-infection and the other four on Day 28 post-infection. At necropsy, abomasal contents and tissues were collected for worm counts, abomasal lymph nodes and fundic tissue for cytokine gene expression and fundic tissue for histopathology. Expression of resilience appeared to be age-dependent as there were no significant differences in either FEC or worm burden between lambs from the two flocks, unlike older HFW lambs in a previous study. Abomasal secretion did not differ between flocks. Histopathological changes were typical of parasitism: inflammatory cells, mainly eosinophils and lymphocytes, were numerous in nodular areas and there were fewer TGF-α positive parietal cells, many of which were vacuolated. By Day 28 p.i., globule leucocytes were present. Mucosal thickness was significantly greater on Day 8 than Day 28 p.i. (p = 0.000) and in C than HFW lambs. There were fewer parietal cells on Day 28 than on Day 8 p.i. (p = 0.003) for pooled data. Circulating eosinophil counts increased moderately in both groups, significantly less in the HFW lambs. Fewer tissue and blood eosinophils in the HFW than C group on Day 8 p.i. were consistent with cytokine gene expression patterns, particularly lower IL-5 levels. Worm count decreased by 90% by Day 28 p.i., along with declining tissue eosinophil counts and IL-13 gene expression and increasing IL-10 and IL-4 gene expression. Food intake was depressed less in the HFW lambs, suggesting that maintenance of appetite could be an important aspect of the physiological basis for resilience. Although the resilient phenotype was not apparent at the younger age, lesser effects on food intake, differences in ALN cytokine profiles and lower blood and tissue eosinophil numbers in the HFW lambs may lead to the expression of resilience when older.  相似文献

In this experiment, the effects of the Hungarian red mud disaster were studied in a soil column experiment focusing on element solubility. The effect of flooding with the highly alkaline red mud suspension and the effect of the percolation of precipitation water through the 10 cm thick red mud layer were modelled separately. Both scenarios affected the soil pH up to a depth of 80 cm. An increase in the total element concentration was only observed for Na and Mo, probably due to the leaching of red mud particles measuring 0.05?C0.02 and <0.002 mm in the column. At the same time, the water-soluble concentrations of the potentially toxic elements As, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn rose, at least in the top soil layer, but the concentration values remained below the limit values laid down by quality standards. Over a longer period of time, the main environmental risk raised by the disaster is the secondary salinization of the area.  相似文献

Cone‐rod dystrophy is a progressive inherited retinal degenerative disorder that occurs in humans and dogs. The deletion in the nephronophthisis 4 (NPHP4) gene was established as a causative mutation in standard wire‐haired Dachshunds. We analyzed all varieties of Dachshunds from the Czech Republic and five other dog breeds and found that the deletion in the NPHP4 (in heterozygous state) is present not only in standard‐, but also in miniature wire‐haired Dachshunds, but not in other varieties of Dachshunds or in other breeds.  相似文献
