The impact of Euspira fortunei as an alien predator on fluctuations in population densities of prey mollusks between 2001 and 2010 on the Tona coast, northern Japan, was investigated. This species increased dramatically from 2002 to 2004. In contrast, prey species such as Ruditapes philippinarum and Macoma incongrua decreased rapidly from 2001 to 2004, whereas Pillucina pisidium and Batillaria cumingii did not show a significant decrease during this period. Using a laboratory experiment, we were able to show that these decreases in the population densities of some species of mollusks but not other species were the result of species-selective predation by E. fortunei, as the experiment revealed that E. fortunei preferred to attack R. philippinarum and M. incongrua rather than P. pisidium, although the predator did expand its diet to include P. pisidium after it had consumed 16 of the 20 preferred prey available (i.e., R. philippinarum and M. incongrua). This case study suggests that invasive naticid predators have the potential to affect the population density and community structure of prey mollusks in recipient coastal ecosystems through predation.  相似文献

To clarify the socioeconomic factors influencing global paper and paperboard demand, a panel data analysis was conducted covering the period 1961–2014. This study used paper and paperboard demand as the dependent variable, and a country’s economic level, Internet usage rate, plastic packaging demand, and time trend as the explanatory variables. An inverse U-shaped quadratic relationship, such as an environmental Kuznets curve, was found between economic level and paper and paperboard demand, which saturates and begins to decline as economic level increases. The economic level representing the turning point differs significantly with the use, ranging from around 37,000 US$/person for newsprint paper to around 66,000 US$/person for printing and writing paper. For both newsprint paper and printing and writing paper, demand declines owing to the spread of the Internet as the economic level rises, although this reductive effect is greater for printing and writing paper than for newsprint paper. A substitution relationship is not found between wrapping paper and corrugated cardboard on the one hand and plastic packaging on the other hand as the economic level becomes higher.  相似文献

Changes in serum concentrations of estradiol-17β, testosterone, 17α,20βdihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one, and vitellogenin were investigated during ovarian development induced by injection of a salmon pituitary extract in cultured European eel Anguilla anguilla . Vitellogenesis was induced with a weekly dose of 50 mg pituitary extract/kg body weight. In eels receiving that dose, gonadsomatic indices ranged from 20–43% after the 10th–11th weekly injection. Body weights were relatively stable during vitellogenesis, but increased dramatically during final maturation. Serum estradiol-17β levels increased slightly during vitellogenesis and peaked at an average of 6.95 ng/mL at final maturation. The profile of serum vitellogenin followed that of estradiol-17β which increased markedly from an average of 0.36 to 20.72 mg/mL. Control levels of vitellogenin were undetectable throughout the study. Average serum levels of testosterone increased to a peak of 17.74 ng/mL in the early stage of vitellogenesis, followed by a sharp drop to initial levels (3.86 ng/mL) in the late stage of vitellogenesis, and then increased again to an average of 8.84 ng/mL at the final maturation stage. Serum 17α,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one was not detected (<50 pg/mL) throughout the experiment. Profiles of serum estradiol-17β, testosterone, and vitellogenin observed during ovarian development appear different from those found in salmonids and other teleosts. This study indicates, however, that cultured European eels are a useful model for study of gonadal maturation in the eel.  相似文献

Methoxychlor (MXC) is a non-steroidal pesticide that is known to possess estrogenic activity, and therefore may be potentially hazardous to the development and/or reproduction. The present study assessed the effects of perinatal exposure to MXC on reproductive function after maturation in both male and female rats. Pregnant rats were fed a phytoestrogen-free diet containing different doses of MXC (24, 240, and 1200 ppm) from day 15 of gestation to day 10 after parturition, and reproductive functions of offspring were examined after maturation. In males, MXC exposure during the perinatal period decreased serum LH and FSH, but not testosterone levels, but it did not affect copulatory behavior. In females, MXC exposure prolonged the days exhibiting cornified vaginal smears during the estrous cycle. In addition, both the lordosis reflex and preovulatory LH surge on the presumptive proestrous evening were suppressed in MXC-exposed females. These results suggest that perinatal exposure to MXC exerts permanent effects on several aspects of the reproductive function in both male and female rats.  相似文献

A study was conducted to evaluate the mineral content of pork tissue with particular emphasis on Se between various states (regions) having different diet (grain) indigenous Se concentrations. The study involved 19 states in the north, central, and southern regions of the United States, with committee members of NCR-42 and S-1012 (formerly S-288). A total of 62 pigs were used, with collaborators sending 100-g samples each of loin, heart, and liver, and a 3- to 4-g sample of hair (collected along the topline) from two to five market-weight pigs to a common laboratory for analysis. Diets at each station were formulated with locally purchased soybean meal and grain that was either grown or normally fed to pigs within their state. Tissues were analyzed for Se, but only the loin was analyzed for the macro- and micromineral elements. Correlation of dietary minerals to the tissue element was determined. The results demonstrated differences in tissue Se among states (P < 0.01), with high correlations of dietary Se to loin (r = 0.84; P < 0.01), heart (r = 0.84; P < 0.01), liver (r = 0.83; P < 0.01), and hair Se (r = 0.90; P < 0.01) concentrations. The correlation of hair Se to the Se concentration of loin, heart, and liver tissues was high (r > 0.90; P < 0.01). States in the west-central region of the United States and west of the Mississippi river had higher dietary Se and tissue Se concentrations than states in the eastern section of the Corn Belt, east of the Mississippi river, and along the East Coast. Generally, states did not differ greatly in their loin macro- and micromineral concentrations. The simple correlation of dietary minerals to their corresponding loin mineral concentration was generally non-significant, but most macrominerals had decreasing mineral concentrations when the dietary mineral level was higher. These results indicate that regional differences in tissue Se were influenced more by the indigenous Se content of the diet (grain) fed to the pigs than from sodium selenite.  相似文献

In the temperate zone of Japan, Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. bears needles of up to three age classes in the upper crown and up to five age classes in the lower crown. To elucidate the effects of leaf age on photosynthetic parameters and its relationships with leaf mass per unit area (LMA) and leaf nitrogen (N(l)) concentration on an area (N(a)) and mass (N(m)) basis, we measured seasonal variations in LMA, N(l), light-saturated photosynthetic rate (A(max)), stomatal conductance (g(s)), maximum rate of carboxylation (V(cmax)) and maximum rate of electron transport (J(max)) in leaves of all age classes in the upper and lower crown. Leaf mass per unit area increased by 27% with increasing leaf age in the lower crown, but LMA did not depend on age in the upper crown. Leaf age had a significant effect on N(m) but not on N(a) in both crown positions, indicating that decreases in N(m) resulted from dilution. Photosynthetic parameters decreased significantly with leaf age in the lower crown (39% for A(max) and 43% for V(cmax)), but the effect of leaf age was not as great in the upper crown, although these parameters exhibited seasonal variation in both crown positions. Regression analysis indicated a close relationship between LMA and N(a), regardless of age class or when each age class was pooled (r(2) = 0.57-0.86). Relationships between LMA and N(a) and among A(max), V(cmax) and J(max) were weak or not significant when all age classes were examined by regression analysis. However, compared with older leaves, relationships among LMA, N(a) and A(max) were stronger in younger leaves. These results indicate that changes in LMA and N(l) mainly reflect light acclimation during leaf development, but they are only slightly affected by irradiance in mature leaves. In conclusion, LMA and N(l) are useful parameters for estimating photosynthetic capacity, but age-related effects need to be taken into account, especially in evergreen conifers.  相似文献

Sixty-four individually housed pigs were used to investigate the effect of amino acid content of finisher diets on growth performance of pigs subjected to marginal dietary amino acid restrictions (80% of the 1988 NRC lysine recommendation) during the grower phase. In each of the two trials, low- and high-amino-acid grower diets (.421 and .765 g lysine/MJ DE, respectively) and four finisher diets (.421, .516, .612, and .707 g lysine/MJ DE) were randomly assigned within sex to 16 gilts and 16 castrated males weighing 23.0 +/- 2.0 kg in a 2 x 4 factorial arrangement of treatments. The average weight of pigs after a completion of diet change was 50.4 +/- 2.1 kg. All pigs were slaughtered at an average weight of 105.2 +/- 4.1 kg. Ultrasound backfat thickness was measured at the time of diet change and before slaughter. Pigs were allowed ad libitum access to feed and water. During the grower phase, pigs fed the high-amino-acid diet grew faster (P < .001) and more efficiently (P < .001) and had less ultrasound backfat (P < .001) than those fed the low-amino-acid diet. The grower diet had no effect on weight gain during the finisher phase. Consequently, pigs fed the high-amino-acid grower diet had better overall weight gain (P < .01) than those fed the low-amino-acid diet. The rate of lean accretion was, however, similar between the two groups of pigs. Furthermore, pigs fed the low-amino-acid grower diet seemed to have better carcass quality, as indicated by less ultrasound backfat (P < .01) and larger carcass longissimus muscle area (P < .05). Average and 10th rib carcass backfat decreased linearly (P < or = .05) and lean accretion rate improved linearly (P < .05) as the amino acid content of finisher diets increased, but there was no grower x finisher diet interaction in these and other response criteria. Although no evidence of compensatory weight gain was observed, it is possible that compensatory lean tissue growth may have occurred in pigs subjected to early amino acid restrictions at the expense of fatty tissue growth.  相似文献

The Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture, Japan, which is inhabited by Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata), is the northernmost habitat for wild primates in the world. This study was the first to determine the conception dates of specific individuals and estimate the pregnancy rate of wild populations in this region. The pregnancy rate of animals aged 5 years or more at delivery was estimated to be 40.9% (27/66). Conception dates of each fetus were also estimated using a regression line of Pig-tail monkeys (Macaca nemestrina), which are taxonomically related to Japanese monkeys and have a similar physique. The conception dates were distributed across 90 days between September 24th and December 23rd, with a mean conception date of November 4th (SD=22.3 days, n=53). Using these findings, the mean birth date was estimated as April 25th, more than two weeks earlier than the mean birth date in previous research determined using direct observations carried out over the past 20 years ago. Global warming due to climate change is thought to be one of the main causes of this difference.  相似文献

Brown leaf spot caused by Mycochaetophora gentianae is a serious disease on gentian in Japan. Previous studies revealed that Gentiana triflora cultivars were susceptible to M. gentianae and that G. scabra cultivars and their interspecific hybrid cultivars were resistant. We subsequently analyzed the mode of inheritance of resistance to M. gentianae in gentians using several populations derived from crosses between G. scabra and G. triflora. Parental G. scabra and G. triflora lines, F1 and BC1 plants were inoculated with a conidial suspension and assessed for susceptibility to M. gentianae. All tested F1 plants were resistant to M. gentianae, indicating that the resistance of G. scabra was inherited dominantly. Segregation ratios in backcross progenies using G. scabra line OK fit the Mendelian ratio of 1:1, showing the involvement of a single dominant locus. These results indicate that the resistance to M. gentianae in G. scabra line OK is controlled by a single dominant allele designated as gentian brown leaf spot resistance (GBLS-1). Finding this allele should facilitate future breeding efforts to develop resistant gentian cultivars.  相似文献
