ObjectiveTo evaluate the effects of intravenous lidocaine (L) and ketamine (K) alone and their combination (LK) on the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of sevoflurane (SEVO) in dogs.Study designProspective randomized, Latin-square experimental study.AnimalsSix, healthy, adult Beagles, 2 males, 4 females, weighing 7.8 – 12.8 kg.MethodsAnesthesia was induced with SEVO in oxygen delivered by face mask. The tracheas were intubated and the lungs ventilated to maintain normocapnia. Baseline minimum alveolar concentration of SEVO (MACB) was determined in duplicate for each dog using an electrical stimulus and then the treatment was initiated. Each dog received each of the following treatments, intravenously as a loading dose (LD) followed by a constant rate infusion (CRI): lidocaine (LD 2 mg kg−1, CRI 50 μg kg−1minute−1), lidocaine (LD 2 mg kg−1, CRI 100 μgkg−1 minute−1), lidocaine (LD 2 mg kg−1, CRI 200 μg kg−1 minute−1), ketamine (LD 3 mg kg−1, CRI 50 μg kg−1 minute−1), ketamine (LD 3 mgkg−1, CRI 100 μg kg−1 minute−1), or lidocaine (LD 2 mg kg−1, CRI 100 μg kg−1 minute−1) + ketamine (LD 3 mg kg−1, CRI 100 μg kg−1 minute−1) in combination. Post-treatment MAC (MACT) determination started 30 minutes after initiation of treatment.ResultsLeast squares mean ± SEM MACB of all groups was 1.9 ± 0.2%. Lidocaine infusions of 50, 100, and 200 μg kg−1 minute−1 significantly reduced MACB by 22.6%, 29.0%, and 39.6%, respectively. Ketamine infusions of 50 and 100 μg kg−1 minute−1 significantly reduced MACB by 40.0% and 44.7%, respectively. The combination of K and L significantly reduced MACB by 62.8%.Conclusions and clinical relevanceLidocaine and K, alone and in combination, decrease SEVO MAC in dogs. Their use, at the doses studied, provides a clinically important reduction in the concentration of SEVO during anesthesia in dogs.  相似文献

There are limited criteria for the detection of pulmonary hypertension in dogs undergoing computed tomography (CT) for pulmonary disease. This retrospective analytical exploratory study compared a CT pulmonary trunk to aorta ratio with echocardiographic estimates of pulmonary hypertension. Dogs having both a contrast thoracic CT and echocardiogram were selected and maximal pulmonary trunk and descending aorta diameters were measured by two observers on a single transverse CT image. Computed tomographic diameter ratios were compared with the echocardiographic parameters of tricuspid regurgitation gradient, right ventricular acceleration time‐to‐ejection time ratio, pulmonary insufficiency gradient, and pulmonary artery to aorta diameter. A total of 78 dogs were sampled, with 44 dogs having one or more finding suggestive of pulmonary hypertension. A moderate positive correlation was shown between tricuspid regurgitation gradient and CT pulmonary trunk to aorta ratio (r = 0.61, P‐value < 0.0001). Mean CT pulmonary trunk to aorta ratio of dogs with moderate (P = 0.0132) and severe (P < 0.0003) pulmonary hypertension were significantly higher than normal dogs. There was no significant difference in mean CT pulmonary trunk to aorta ratio between normal and mild pulmonary hypertension dogs (P = 0.4244). The intraclass correlation coefficient (0.72) showed good reproducibility of the ratio. Findings indicated that CT pulmonary trunk to aorta ratio is a reproducible and potentially useful method to predict moderate and severe pulmonary hypertension in dogs, but not mild pulmonary hypertension. In dogs undergoing thoracic CT for pulmonary disease, an increased ratio should prompt follow up echocardiography.  相似文献

Predator-livestock interactions are a major concern for both agriculture and conservation globally. Using retrospective survey data from 274 ranches in Wyoming, United States, we used information theory to model how ranch attributes and large carnivores influenced the timing, duration, and severity of livestock predation. We then used constrained ordination to understand how 1) landscape, weather, and animal features influence predation and 2) how livestock behavior and nonlethal loss relate to ranch attributes and large carnivores. Timing, duration, and severity of livestock predation were generally not explained by ranch size or number of counties but were explained by livestock type, livestock parturition (either timing or duration), and documented large carnivore loss. Addition of the large carnivore loss variable to global models always improved Akaike information criterion scores. Rangelands characterized as rough, forested, shrubby, or a public grazing allotment reportedly increased predation risk, in part, due to large carnivore exposure. Approximately two-thirds of participants noticed livestock nervousness if a predator was nearby, half of participants noted changes in livestock distribution patterns, and a quarter of participants noted a reduction in livestock grazing time. Nonlethal losses such as lower weight gains, lower conception rates, lower birth rates, and delayed birth season were reported by 27%, 19%, 12%, and 11% of participants, respectively. Ordination revealed separation between behavioral changes and nonlethal losses, attributed to large carnivore exposure. Parturition relative to livestock type was also strongly correlated to timing and duration of predation for cattle-only operations but not for operations with sheep. The predictive cattle predation-parturition model suggests that for each additional month of calving, producers should anticipate 21 additional d of predation. Understanding predator-livestock interactions relative to ranch and rangeland features, parturition, large carnivore exposure, and losses that extend beyond mortalities can assist in developing novel strategies to mitigate lethal and nonlethal losses.  相似文献

Attempts to determine the vitality of vegetation and to detect vegetation stress from remotely sensed data have focused on chlorophyll concentration, because it influences the reflectance of vegetation and tends to correlate with vegetation health and stress. Pollution, pathogens and pests can cause localized regions of chlorosis and necrosis across a leaf surface, but the extent to which these patches influence the overall reflectance and spectral signature of the leaf and canopy has not been tested. A conifer leaf model (LIBERTY), which simulates the influence of leaf biochemical concentrations of chlorophyll, water, lignin, cellulose and protein on the reflectance of leaves from 400 to 2500 nm, was used to determine the effect of patches of chlorosis on leaf reflectance. A fraction of the leaf f is assumed to be chlorotic with a chlorophyll concentration C(1). The remainder of the leaf has chlorophyll concentration C(2) such that mean leaf chlorophyll concentration, C(mean) = fC(1) + (1 - f)C(2), is constant for a range of f and C(1) values. LIBERTY can be used to estimate the reflectance of a leaf with a particular chlorophyll concentration at a particular wavelength R(lambda,C) (assuming other leaf properties remain constant), thus we can estimate the reflectance of the chlorotic leaf as fR(lambda,C(1))+ (1 - f)R(lambda,C(2)). The model indicated that small areas of chlorosis have a disproportionately large influence on overall leaf reflectance. For example, a leaf with 25% of its area chlorotic can have the same reflectance (400-700 nm) as a homogeneous leaf with 60% less chlorophyll. Thus, determination of chlorophyll concentration from remotely sensed data is prone to underestimation when chlorophyll is nonuniformly distributed. Hence, attempts to model leaf and canopy reflectance using radiative transfer models will need to consider how to incorporate nonuniform chlorophyll distribution.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Lactoferrin is a colostral glycoprotein with antimicrobial properties. HYPOTHESES: (1) Serum lactoferrin and immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations are correlated and increase in healthy foals after ingestion of colostrum; (2) compared to healthy foals, ill foals will have lower lactoferrin concentrations that correlate with their IgG concentration, neutrophil count, the diagnosis of sepsis, and survival; and (3) plasma concentrations of lactoferrin will be less than serum concentrations. ANIMALS: Healthy foals (n = 16), mature horses (n = 10), and ill foals 1-4 days old (n = 111) that were examined for suspected sepsis were used for blood collection. Colostrum was obtained from 10 healthy mares unrelated to the foals. METHODS: Blood was obtained from the healthy foals at birth and 1-3 days of age and from the ill foals at admission. Serum IgG was quantified by single radial immunodiffusion (SRID). Lactoferrin concentrations in colostrum and blood were determined by an enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay. The sepsis score, blood culture results, neutrophil counts, and survival were obtained on ill foals. RESULTS: The mean colostral lactoferrin concentration was 21.7 microg/mL. Compared to values at birth, serum IgG (18+/-2 versus 2,921+/-245 mg/dL, SEM) and lactoferrin (249+/-39 versus 445+/-63 ng/mL, SEM) concentrations were significantly greater in healthy foals 1-3 days old. Serum lactoferrin concentration in 1-3-day-old healthy foals was not different from mature horses or ill foals. IgG and lactoferrin concentrations were significantly correlated only in healthy foals. Serum lactoferrin concentrations were significantly lower in ill neutropenic foals. The serum IgG concentration was significantly lower in ill foals as compared to healthy foals. Only serum IgG was significantly less in ill foals with a positive sepsis score and in nonsurvivors, Plasma lactoferrin concentrations were lower than serum concentrations, although values were significantly correlated. CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Although both serum IgG and lactoferrin concentrations increase in healthy foals after ingestion of colostrum, only serum IgG is significantly correlated with the sepsis score and outcome.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Ingestion of wilted red maple leaves by horses can result in severe hemolytic anemia and methemoglobinemia. Little is known about what factors influence the outcome of red maple leaf toxicosis in horses. HYPOTHESIS: Our hypothesis was that physical examination findings, clinicopathologic variables or therapeutic modalities may predict outcome in horses with red maple leaf toxicity. ANIMALS: Horses with red maple leaf toxicosis presented to referral hospitals in the southeast region of the United States. METHODS: A multi-institutional retrospective study was designed to identify factors that predict mortality in horses with red maple toxicosis. RESULTS: Thirty-two horses with red maple toxicosis were identified, 19 of which died. Twenty-nine horses presented with anemia and 24 had clinicopathologic evidence of systemic inflammation. Renal insufficiency was identified in 12/30 (41%) horses. Laminitis (9/28) and colic (13/30) also were identified in horses with red maple toxicosis, but development of these 2 conditions did not have a negative effect on short-term survival. Horses with red maple toxicosis that survived to discharge were likely to have developed pyrexia during hospitalization (P = .030). Horses that were treated with a corticosteroid had a significantly increased likelihood of death (P = .045). There was no significant relationship between initial serum hemoglobin concentration, methemoglobin concentration, or percentage methemoglobin and mortality in this horse series. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: This study suggests that information obtained on initial examination cannot be used to accurately predict survival in horses with red maple toxicosis, but horses that receive corticosteroids are unlikely to survive.  相似文献

Experiments to demonstrate the transfer of genes within a natural environment are technically difficult because of the unknown numbers and strains of bacteria present, as well as difficulties designing adequate control experiments. The results of such studies should be viewed within the limits of the experimental design. Most experiments to date have been based on artificial models, which only give approximations of the real-life situation. The current study uses more natural models and provides information about tetracycline resistance as it occurs in wild-type bacteria within the environment of the normal intestinal tract of an animal. Tetracycline sensitive, nalidixic acid resistant Escherichia coli isolates of human origin were administered to mice and chicken animal models. They were monitored for acquisition of tetracycline resistance from indigenous or administered donor E. coli. Five sets of in vivo experiments demonstrated unequivocal transfer of tetracycline resistance to tetracycline sensitive recipients. The addition of tetracycline in the drinking water of the animals increased the probability of transfer between E. coli strains originating from the same animal species. The co-transfer of unselected antibiotic resistance in animal models was also demonstrated.  相似文献
