Embryos in freshly matured seeds of the facultative winter annual Papaver rhoeas are underdeveloped and physiologically dormant; thus, seeds have morphophysiological dormancy (MPD). Seeds lost physiological dormancy during 12 weeks of burial in moist soil at 12 h/12 h daily alternating temperature regimes of 15/5°C, 20/10 °C and 25/15 °C but not at 1 °C. Physiological dormancy was not broken in seeds stored dry at room temperature for 12 weeks. After physiological dormancy was broken, seeds required light for embryo growth (i.e. for loss of morphological dormancy) and consequently for germination. After a 12-week period of burial in soil at 25/15 °C, seeds that matured in 1997 germinated to 100% in light at 25/15 °C, demonstrating that cold stragification temperatures (≈ 0.5–10 °C) are not required for embryo growth. Thus, seeds have non-deep simple MPD. During exposure to low winter temperatures (5/1 °C, 1 °C), 52% of the seeds with physiologically non-dormant embryos entered conditional dormancy and thus lost the ability to germinate at 25/15 °C but not at 15/5 °C or 20/10 °C. The peak of germination for seeds sown in southern Sweden was in autumn, but some also germinated in spring. A higher percentage of seeds that matured in a relatively warm, dry year (1997) came out of MPD and germinated than did those that matured in a relatively cool, wet year (1998) at the same site.  相似文献

Chronic hypertrophic pyloric gastropathy in 14 dogs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
SUMMARY Ten mate and 4 female dogs with chronic hypertrophic pyloric gastropathy were seen at the Sydney University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in the period 1982–88. The most commonly affected breeds were the Shihtzu and Maltese. The mean age was 8.2 yr and the mean body weight 6.5 kg. The most common clinical signs were vomiting, weight loss, polydipsia and depression. Hypokalaemia was present in 11 of 12 dogs examined and hypochloraemia in 10 of 11 dogs examined. Five of the six dogs that had blood gases measured were found to have a metabolic alkalosis. Surgery was performed on 13 dogs; pyloromyotomy 7, pyloroplasty 4, gastroduodenostomy 2. There was a recurrence of symptoms in one pyloromyotomy dog, and fatal ulceration and perforation of the cardia occurred in one pyloroplasty case. The remaining 11 dogs had a mean known symptom-free survival time of 20 mo. This study confirms the preponderance of affected males, identifies electrolyte and blood gas disturbances as significant complications of chronic hypertrophic pyloric gastropathy, and suggests that relatively minor surgery (pyloromyotomy) may have a place in the treatment of a selected subgroup of cases.  相似文献

Necropsy reports from 28 rhesus monkeys that had been experimentally infected with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) and that were free of cytomegalovirus were reviewed. Lung sections from 24 of these monkeys that had no etiologic agent other than SIV detected in the lung were studied in detail by histopathologic, immunohistochemical, and electron microscopic examination and by in situ hybridization. Fourteen of the monkeys were part of a serial euthanasia study, while others were euthanatized after they became moribund. The following lesions were detected: perivascular inflammation, vasculitis, interstitial pneumonia, syncytial cells, hemorrhage, fibrin exudation, and pleural fibrosis. Perivascular inflammation was the most frequent lesion and occurred as early as 2 weeks after inoculation. Severe pneumonia and numerous syncytial cells were seen only in animals euthanatized because they had become moribund. The lesions appeared to be directly due to SIV infection. SIV antigens, RNA, and virions were detected in syncytial cells and macrophages by immunohistochemical examination, in situ hybridization, and transmission electron microscopic examination, respectively. The amount of virus present was correlated with the severity of the lesions. The SIV-induced lesions were different from those of the lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia, which occurs in human immunodeficiency virus-infected children and in ovine lentivirus-infected sheep and goats.  相似文献

The genetic aspects of inherited, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus of Keeshond dogs were studied retrospectively and in a prospective mating program. The symbol dm was used to designate the gene that causes hypoplasia of the islets of Langerhans. The retrospective study disclosed 4 diabetic dogs; prospective outcross, backcross, and inbred matings disclosed 49 diabetic dogs. Outcrossing demonstrated that the diabetic phenotype was displayed readily against a genetic background of a breed other than the Keeshond. In dogs with the dm/dm genotype, onset of diabetes was most frequent before the dog was 6 months old, but did occur in some older dogs. The dm genotype was best described as autosomal recessive.  相似文献

A vaccine against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) would be highly effective in stopping the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic. A comprehensive evaluation of potential vaccine methodologies can be made by means of the simian model for AIDS, which takes advantage of the similarities in viral composition and disease potential between simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection of rhesus macaques and HIV infection in humans. Immunization with a formalin-inactivated whole SIV vaccine potentiated with either alum and the Syntex adjuvant threonyl muramyl dipeptide (MDP) or MDP alone resulted in the protection of eight of nine rhesus monkeys challenged with ten animal-infectious doses of pathogenic virus. These results demonstrate that a whole virus vaccine is highly effective in inducing immune responses that can protect against lentivirus infection and AIDS-like disease.  相似文献

Eleven mangabey monkeys inoculated with Mycobacterium leprae developed lepromatous-type leprosy. Nine of the mangabeys were inoculated with M. leprae isolated from a mangabey with naturally acquired lepromatous leprosy. Immune function was depressed in some of these animals after dissemination of the disease. Two mangabeys developed lepromatous leprosy after inoculation with human M. leprae passaged in an armadillo. Three rhesus and three African green monkeys inoculated with mangabey-derived M. leprae also developed lepromatous leprosy. Mangabeys may be the first reported nonhuman primate model for the study of leprosy. Rhesus and African green monkeys may also prove to be reproducibly susceptible to the disease.  相似文献
