The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of the supplementation of two extra‐virgin olive oils (EVOO) having different polyphenols content, on canine spermatozoa kinetic parameters and seminal plasma oxidative status. The study was conducted on 12 clinically healthy dogs of different breeds (2–7 years, 5–48 kg of body weight) divided into two groups: an experimental group supplemented with EVOO (Coratina cultivar) high in polyphenols (H‐P) and a control group fed EVOO (Cima di Bitonto cultivar) low in polyphenols (L‐P). The oil was daily administered per os (1 ml/3 kg BW) before meal. Semen collection was made twice at 15 days distance (D01 and D02) and then at 30 (D30), 60 (D60) and 90 (D90) days. Semen concentration and kinetic parameters were measured using computer‐assisted sperm analysis (CASA) system to evaluate: sperm total count, sperm motile (MOT%), progressive motility (PROGR%) and its fractions, straight‐line velocity (VSL, μm/s), curvilinear velocity (VCL, μm/s), average path velocity (VAP, μm/s), amplitude of lateral head displacement (ALH, μm), beat cross frequency (BCF, Hz), straightness (STR%) and linearity (LIN%). On seminal plasma, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and biological antioxidant potential (BAP) were tested. From findings, no differences were found for sperm MOT, VSL, VCL, VAP, ALH, BCF, STR, LIN and BAP. A gradual enhancement of PROGR% was observed in H‐P group (< .01). The ROS levels were higher in dogs H‐P compared to the other group (< .05). In conclusion, our results highlight the positive effects of EVOO polyphenols on sperm PROGR% in healthy dogs.  相似文献

This study had the aim of investigating the efficiency of timed artificial insemination (TAI) through the progesterone‐releasing intravaginal device (PRID), used in new condition and for the second and third times in Nelore cows. The effects of device reuse and body condition score (BCS) on the conception rate (CR) were evaluated in 1,122 multiparous Nelore cows (mean BCS of 2.7 ± 0.4), which were randomly distributed into three groups that received new (n = 330), once (n = 439) and twice used (n = 353) PRID. Among the 1,122 females that underwent TAI, 573 became pregnant, thus representing an overall CR of 51.06%. Cows with BCS between 2.75 and 4.0 had greater (p < .0001) CR (69.75%) than cows with BSC of 2.0–2.5 (32.98%). It was observed that the CR through using PRID was 60.00%, 51.71% and 41.93% for new, once and twice used PRID, respectively, with difference between all groups (p < .0001). Under tropical conditions, animals with BCS greater than 2.5 had a higher CR, and the CR decreased proportionally with the number of times that the PRID had been used.  相似文献

The μ-opioid receptor (MOR) is expressed in bovine, human, equine and canine oocytes, and in seasonal breeders, it is expressed with higher intensity during the anoestrous phase. Supplementation of in vitro maturation (IVM) medium with opioid agents, agonists or antagonists, was shown to affect oocyte maturation in several species such as rat, bovine and equine. This study reports the effects of supplementing IVM medium with naloxone (Nx), an opioid antagonist, on nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation rate of oocytes recovered from anoestrous bitches. Cytoplasmic maturation was examined in terms of mitochondrial (mt) distribution. In order to confirm the receptor-mediated action of Nx, in oocytes of anoestrous bitches, MOR expression was analyzed by Western blot. Cumulus–oocyte complexes, recovered from the ovaries of bitches in anoestrous, were cultured in vitro and Nx was added at the concentrations of 1 × 10−6, 1 × 10−8 and 1 × 10−10  m . The rate of oocytes resuming meiosis after culture in presence of 1 × 10−6  m Nx (29%) was significantly higher than that of oocytes of control group (12%; p < 0.05). However, treatment with Nx did not affect mt distribution pattern. In denuded oocytes and in corresponding cumulus cells, a doublet of 65 and 50 kDa was observed. We conclude that, in oocytes of anoestrous bitches, MOR is expressed and Nx significantly improves nuclear maturation rate. Further studies should be performed to elucidate the expression of other opioid receptors, such as δ and κ, and possible interactive effects of their antagonists on canine oocyte maturation.  相似文献

Introduction   Dietary pectin vs cellulose has been shown to enhance apparent magnesium absorption in rats (unpublished data). This observation supports that of V ahouny et al. (1987), indicating that pectin feeding produced a more positive balance of magnesium in young, growing rats than did cellulose feeding. Pectin is a soluble, viscous and readily fermentable non-starch polysaccharide, but is not digested by animal enzymes. Pectin feeding raises the viscosity of small intestinal digesta in rats (J udd and T ruswell 1985). The increase in magnesium absorption seen after pectin feeding could relate to its fermentation, which may lower the pH of the small intestinal digesta, which in turn raises the solubility of minerals, rendering them more available for absorption. Both dietary lactulose and lactose, which are not digestible but highly fermentable, lower the pH of small intestinal digesta and increase mineral absorption in rats (H eijnen et al. 1993). The influence of viscosity per se on mineral absorption is unknown. In contrast to the above-mentioned mechanism, the observed stimulatory effect of pectin feeding on magnesium absorption (unpublished data) could relate to viscosity of small intestinal contents. To provide clues as to this possibility, the model compound carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) may be used. This compound is not digested by animal enzymes, is non-fermentable, but is highly viscous and has been shown to raise the viscosity of small intestinal contents in broiler chickens (S mits et al. 1997). Thus we fed rats on diets with different levels of CMC to study the influence of digesta viscosity on apparent absorption of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus.  相似文献

A retrospective study was carried out on the efficacy of seven commercial diets designed to be fed to cats with chronic renal failure. The median survival time of 175 cats that received conventional diets was seven months, whereas the median survival time of 146 cats given one of the seven diets was 16 months. The cats on the most effective of the diets had a median survival time of 23 months and those on the least effective diet had a median survival time of 12 months. The composition of the seven diets was comparable, except that the most effective diet had a particularly high content of eicosapentaenoic acid.  相似文献

The intake of linoleic acid (LA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) in relation to average daily weight gain (ADG) was studied in growing-finishing pigs kept on smallholdings in Central Vietnam. Groups of three piglets each were assigned randomly to 12 farms, where they were fed on local feedstuffs according to the farmer's choice but were given a restricted amount of dry matter according to a preset feeding regimen. On arrival at the farms, the pigs weighed 10.4 +/- 0.9 kg (mean +/- SD, n = 36) and at 130 days of age they weighed 45.4 +/- 9.6 kg. Dietary LA concentration ranged from 1.34 to 2.41 g/MJ metabolizable energy (ME) and ALA from 0.06 to 0.33 g/MJ ME. On a farm level, dietary LA and ALA concentrations were significantly correlated with their concentrations in adipose tissue, both correlation coefficients being 0.63. Dietary protein concentration and protein:energy ratio were significantly correlated with ADG, the correlation coefficients being 0.68 and 0.64. For individual piglets there were significant correlations between either LA or ALA in adipose tissue and ADG, the correlation coefficients being 0.37 and 0.45. Dietary protein concentration or protein:energy ratio was correlated with the dietary contents of LA and ALA. It is uncertain whether LA and ALA intake had a causal relationship with ADG. Since dietary LA levels were above the LA requirement, LA intake may not have limited growth. It is suggested tentatively that, through enhanced disease resistance, supplementation with ALA of the diets on the farms studied might have a positive influence on ADG.  相似文献

A study was carried out to assess the qualitative risk of development of chronic renal failure (CRF) in young healthy, female cats as based on the content of arachidonic acid (AA) in plasma cholesteryl esters (CE) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in adipose tissue. It has been suggested that the content of AA in CE should be <10% of total fatty acids (TFA) and of EPA in adipose tissue be >1.4% of TFA. Subcutaneous adipose tissue and blood samples were obtained from 48 female cats. There was a statistically significant correlation between linoleic acid content of adipose tissue and that of plasma CE. In all cats the EPA content of adipose tissue was lower than 1.4% of TFA and in 30 cats that of AA in plasma CE was higher than 10% of TFA. The EPA content of adipose tissue and the AA content of plasma CE are determined by the contents of these fatty acids in the diet. It is concluded that the fatty acid composition of cat foods should be determined and that, if deemed necessary, the ingredient composition should be altered so that the content of EPA is raised and that of AA is lowererd.  相似文献

The number and diversity of health claims for dog and cat foods have increased markedly over the past few years. There is no explicit legislation as to these claims. Many claims are insufficiently supported by research and are vague and suggestive. In order to inform pet owners and veterinarians properly and to enhance honest competition among pet food producers, rules for the application of claims should be developed.
