Eight dogs with naturally occurring severe mitral regurgitation underwent mitral valve replacement with a mechanical valve prosthesis during cardiopulmonary bypass. Dogs received warfarin orally after surgery to maintain a prothrombin time-based international normalized ratio from 2.5 to 3.5. Seven dogs survived surgery. Left ventricular diastolic volume index decreased significantly from 206 +/- 91 mL/m2 before surgery to 121 +/- 47 mL/m2 after surgery. Left atrium-to-aorta ratio decreased significantly from 2.66 +/- 0.4 before surgery to 1.73 +/- 0.65 after surgery. Left ventricular systolic volume index was not significantly different after surgery (56 +/- 36 mL/m2), compared with before surgery (40 +/- 32 mL/m2). Median survival after surgery was 4.5 months (range, 0.75 months to 5.25 years). Six dogs died of confirmed or suspected thrombosis of the valve prosthesis. Dogs with severe mitral regurgitation tolerated mitral valve replacement well, but a high incidence of prosthetic valve thrombosis limited long-term outcome.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare outcome and intermediate-term survival for dogs undergoing open surgical correction of subvalvular aortic stenosis (SAS) with those for dogs with SAS that did not undergo surgery. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 44 dogs with congenital SAS. PROCEDURE: Maximum instantaneous systolic pressure gradients were determined by use of Doppler echocardiography. Cardiopulmonary bypass and open surgical correction of SAS (membranectomy with or without septal myectomy) was performed in 22 dogs, whereas 22 dogs did not undergo surgical correction. Cumulative survival was compared between surgical and nonsurgical groups, using Kaplan-Meier nonparametric analysis and a Mantel-Cox log-rank test. RESULTS: Initial systolic pressure gradients were not significantly different for dogs undergoing surgery (128 +/- 55 mm Hg), compared with those that did not undergo surgery (117 +/- 57 mm Hg). Systolic pressure gradients were significantly decreased after surgery in dogs that underwent surgery (54 +/- 27 mm Hg). Cumulative survival was not significantly different between dogs in the surgical and nonsurgical groups. Censoring surgery-related mortality in the analysis still did not reveal a significant difference in cumulative survival between the surgical and nonsurgical groups. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Despite reductions in the systolic pressure gradient and possible associated improvement in exercise tolerance, a palliative benefit on survival was not documented in dogs undergoing surgery for SAS.  相似文献

The British antilewisite butyrate-dithionitrobenzoate (BALB-DTNB) spectrophotometric serum lipase assay was evaluated for precision, accuracy, and diagnostic usefulness in analyzing canine sera. Sera samples from clinically healthy dogs, dogs with experimentally induced pancreatitis, and dogs with spontaneous pancreatitis were analyzed. A titrimetric method of serum lipase determination was used for comparison. Although the BALB-DTNB method was not found to be precise or accurate for determining the lipase activity of canine serum samples, it seemed to be at least as diagnostically useful as the titrimetric procedure. The small sample size requirement and the speed of analysis of the BALB-DTNB procedure are advantages of this method over the titrimetric method, and thus, its use in place of the titrimetric method is justified. A laboratory reference range of 3 to 37 IU/L was determined for canine serum.  相似文献

The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique was applied to the detection of lungworm infections in calves. In experimentally infected animals different responses to larval and adult worm antigens were observed. The response to adult worm antigens was delayed in vaccinated animals when infection occurred by the gradual uptake of infective larvae from contaminated pasture. A serological survey in The Netherlands demonstrated a high incidence of lungworm infection in both vaccinated and unvaccinated herds. There was a good correlation between anti-adult worm and anti-larval ELISA-titres. ELISA appeared to be a useful technique for assessing the level of lungworm infection in a herd.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Associations of age and heart rate with blood flow velocities and durations assessed by pulsed-wave (PW) Doppler echocardiography in cats are incompletely understood. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effects of age and heart rate on blood flow velocities and durations of cardiac events obtained by PW Doppler echocardiography in healthy, nonsedated cats. ANIMALS: A convenience sample of 87 healthy, nonsedated cats aged 3 months to 19 years. METHODS: Prospective, observational study. PW Doppler measurements were obtained by echocardiography. Association of age and heart rate with PW Doppler values was evaluated by simple and multiple linear regressions and ANCOVA. RESULTS: Significant weak positive relationships were found between age and isovolumic relaxation time (IVRT) (R2= 0.18; P< or = .001), and between age and duration of pulmonary venous retrograde flow (R2= 0.07; P= .041). There was a significant weak negative relationship between age and transmitral peak early diastolic velocity (R2= 0.19; P< or = .001). Age and heart rate were significantly related to pulmonary venous peak systolic velocity (R2= 0.13; P= .008). Heart rate affected transmitral peak late diastolic velocity (R2= 0.11; P= .006). After adjusting for heart rate effect, the PW Doppler variables that were significantly different between age groups were transmitral peak early diastolic velocity (P< or = .001), duration of transmitral late diastolic flow (P< or = .001), IVRT (P< or = .001), and the ratio of duration of transmitral late diastolic flow to duration of pulmonary venous retrograde flow (P= .029). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: The association of several PW Doppler-derived variables and age and heart rate is weak and not clinically important.  相似文献

Minute pieces of xylem and other tissues from stems of healthy and fungus-infected plants of two carnation cultivars Novada and Lena were investigated for lignification (lignin/polysaccharide ratios) and lignin composition by means of pyrolysis mass spectrometry and pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry. This technique proved also very effective for the localization of dianthramide phytoalexins which accumulate in carnation after infection withFusarium oxysporum f.sp.dianthi. The composition of healthy tissues from both cultivars was practically the same. In the resistant cultivar Novada, infection induced a change from guaiacyl-syringyl lignin into a mainly guaiacyl lignin in the gum-occluded parts of the xylem. Considerable amounts of the phenolic amide dianthalexin and of other dianthramide phytoalexins were present in occluded xylem, but not in adjacent phloem, medulla or unoccluded xylem. Xylem from susceptible Lena suffering degradation was characterized by a loss of syringyl groups from the lignin and by demethylation of pectin in an early stage of infection. Small quantities of dianthalexin and other dianthramide phytoalexins were found in Lena when local defense responses (particularly occlusion) had occurred. In both cultivars evidence for degradation of hemicellulose was found.Samenvatting Kleine stukjes xyleem en andere weefsels van de stengels van gezonde en geïnoculeerde planten van een tweetal anjercultivars, Novada en Lena, werden onderzocht op mate van lignificatie (lignine/polysaccharide verhouding) en ligninesamenstelling met behulp van pyrolyse-massaspectrometrie en pyrolyse-gaschromatografie massaspectrometrie. Deze techniek bleek ook bruikbaar voor het localiseren van fytoalexinen van het dianthramide-type, welke in anjer accumuleren na infectie metFusarium oxysporum f.sp.dianthi. De samenstelling van gezonde weefsels was bij beide cultivars praktisch gelijk. Bij de resistente cultivar Novada leidde infectie tot een verandering van guaiacyl-syringyllignine in guaiacyl-lignine in door gommen afgesloten delen van het xyleem. Xyleem met gommen bevatte aanzienlijke hoeveelheden van het fenolamide dianthalexine en van de andere fytoalexinen van het dianthramide type. De fytoalexinen werden niet aangetroffen in aangrenzend floeem, merg of gezond ogend xyleem. Bij de vatbare cultivar Lena trad afbraak van het xyleem op, dat daarbij armer aan syringyllignine werd, terwijl tevens in een vroeg stadium pectine werd gedemethyleerd. In Lena werden slechts kleine hoeveelheden fytoalexinen gevonden, met name bij locaal opgetreden afweerreacties zoals gomvorming. Bij beide cultivars werden aanwijzingen voor afbraak van hemicellulosen gevonden.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Age and heart rate have effects on myocardial velocities as assessed by color tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) in people. A similar phenomenon has been identified when left ventricular velocities are assessed in cats. To date, the effects of age and heart rate on tricuspid annular velocities of cats have not been assessed. OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to determine the relationships between age and heart rate and tricuspid annular velocities in cats as assessed by 2-dimensional (2D) color TDI. ANIMALS: Fifty healthy nonsedated cats with age range from 3 months to 19 years old were studied. METHODS: Tricuspid annular velocities were obtained with 2D color TDI. Effects of age and heart rate on tricuspid annular velocities were evaluated by simple linear regression. The strength of the linear relationship was determined by using coefficient of determination (R2). RESULTS: A significant weak negative relationship was found between age and peak early diastolic annular velocity (E'; R2 = 0.135, P = .018). No significant relationships between age and right ventricular (RV) systolic TDI values were found. Diastolic and systolic TDI parameters were not affected by heart rate with the exception of deceleration rate of early diastolic motion (DR; R2 = 0.100, P = .025). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Age and heart rate have minimal effects on tricuspid annular velocities. The present study provides reference ranges for tricuspid annular velocities in healthy cats and information for assessing the clinical utility of color TDI for evaluation of RV function in cats.  相似文献
