We have evaluated the possible phototoxicity of an orange‐based diet on sheep in a controlled environment. The phototoxic effect of psoralens, potent phototoxic furocoumarins, contained in oranges could be manifested either as a perioral contact phototoxicity or as a postingestion phototoxic effect. This research has especial relevance in the region of Valencia, Spain, where sheep are occasionally fed large quantities of these agricultural by‐products and where sunlight is constant year‐round. Ewes were randomly allocated to two groups, one to be fed a maintenance diet (n = 9), and the other to receive, after a brief adaptation period, solely oranges (n = 6). The ewes were placed in an external enclosure and fed this diet for 2 months. At approximately 3‐week intervals, the ewes were subjected to thorough clinical and dermatological examination. Skin biopsies were obtained on two different occasions. All procedures were carried out under the guidelines of the local ethics committee. The sheep on the orange diet showed weight loss and a debilitated condition. However, during the study, no clinical or pathological signs of oral or systemic photodermatitis were observed. Six pigs were used in a two-period crossover study to investigate the pharmacokinetics of amoxycillin after single intravenous and oral doses of 20 mg/kg bodyweight. Twelve pigs were used to study the residues of the drug in muscle, kidney, liver and fat after they had received daily oral doses of 20 mg/kg amoxycillin for five days. The mean (sd) elimination half life (t1/2beta) and mean residence time of amoxycillin in plasma were 3.38 (0.30) and 3.54 (0.43) hours, respectively, after intravenous administration and 4.13 (0.50) and 4.47 (0.30) hours, respectively, after oral administration. After oral administration, the maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) was 7.37 (0.42) microg/ml and it was reached after 0.97 (0.29) hours. Six days after the last oral dose, the mean concentration of amoxycillin in the pigs' kidneys was 21.38 ng/g and in the liver it was 12.32 ng/g, but no amoxycillin could be detected in fat or muscle; the concentrations of amoxycillin in edible tissues were less than the European Union maximal residue limit of 50 microg/kg.  相似文献

Summary Specialized ectomycorrhizal fungi form dense mats in forest soils that have different enzyme levels, higher respiration rates, more biomass, different soil fauna, and different soil chemistry compared with adjacent soils not obviously colonized by these mats. In this study, mats formed by two genera of fungi collected in three locations were compared with a wide range of measurements. Per cent moisture, pH, chloroform fumigation-flush C, anaerobic N mineralization, exchangeable ammonium, and respiration, N2 fixation, and denitrification rates were compared between soils or litter colonized by ectomycorrhizal mat-forming fungi and adjacent non-mat material. Significant differences were observed between the two genera of mat-forming fungi and also between mats formed primarily in mineral soil and those formed in litter. These differences suggest that different mat-forming fungi perform different functions in forest soils and that these fungi function differently in mineral soil compared with litter.Published as Technical Paper 9496, Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station  相似文献

In the search for a standard bioassay of phytotoxicity for allelochemicals, 22 commercial varieties of eight plant species [four dicotyledons: lettuce (Compositae), carrot (Umbelliferae), cress (Cruciferae), tomato (Solanaceae); and four monocotyledons: onion (Liliaceae), barley, wheat, and corn (Gramineae)] proposed as models for the most common weed families have been tested at different pH and solution volumes per set conditions. Nine commercial varieties selected as standard target species (STS) were tested with standard commercial herbicides to ensure their sensitivity to phytotoxic compounds. Results are discussed to establish the proper growth requirements, and sensitivity of commercial seeds of STS and to find the most suitable commercial herbicides that allow comparison with an internal standard to validate the response of potential allelochemicals.  相似文献

Purpose

The turbid plumes generated by different types of dredges have specific behaviours and diffusion patterns. The dredging of the Oil Port of Genoa Multedo (Italy) with three different dredges (grab, backhoe and trailing suction hopper) enabled us to study: the physical and hydrodynamic characteristics of the water column of the port and the area just outside it; the characteristics of the turbid plumes; and the different responses of our optical and acoustic instruments.

Materials and methods

In the dredging operations, a vessel equipped with a vertical acoustic Doppler current profiler and a conductivity–temperature–depth probe with a turbidimeter followed the different dredges during their daily operations. Using the acoustic backscatter and turbidity data acquired during the dredging phase, we investigated the turbidity variations caused by the dredging operations to study the evolution of the plume generated by the three different dredges.

Results and discussion

The grab plume was present only on the bottom up to a distance of 50 m from the grab, while at greater distances the turbidity fell to background values. The backhoe plume was present close to the bottom at a distance of 50 m from the dredging and, in the entire water column, at distances of 50–400 and 100 m inside and outside of the port, respectively. The trailing suction hopper dredge plume extended from the surface through the entire water column at distances from the dredging of 400 and 100 m inside and outside of the port, respectively. The highest values were found close to the bottom at distances from the dredging at 50 and 30 m inside and outside of the port, respectively.

Conclusions

The choice of a combined monitoring system is a good practical solution for studying the differences between the turbid plumes created by the three dredging tools (grab, backhoe and trailing suction hopper dredge) under different hydrodynamic conditions. Furthermore, two different types of instrument should give complementary information on different aspects of sediment resuspension during a dredging operation.  相似文献

Purpose  

The potential negative effects of dredging on a sensitive marine environment (e.g. phanerogamic meadows, beaches, benthic populations) can be justification for restrictions on the dredging project or the creation of a dredging monitoring plan. The dredging of the Port of Genoa (Italy) provided the opportunity to study the concentration of total suspended solids, the physical characteristics of the water column, and the winds and currents determining the hydrodynamic characteristics of the port, and to test a double monitoring system for turbidity control.  相似文献

Structural changes in the agriculture and food system have resulted in larger but fewer farms, while increasing populations in urban areas have pushed development into rural areas. Despite these changes, little research has examined the concern of individuals with regards to loss of farmland and how this may vary based on geography. Building on Bell’s argument that the rural–urban continuum still exists and remains an important part of rural residents’ identity, in this article we examine residents’ concern over loss of farmland as a result of urban growth. We pay particularly close attention to urban–rural differences over concern with loss of farmland. Utilizing survey data collected from over 400 households in the Treasure Valley, a region of the western United States, our results indicate that rural residents show greater levels of concern with farmland loss when compared to their urban counterparts.  相似文献

Ovothiols are histidine-derived thiols isolated from sea urchin eggs, where they play a key role in the protection of cells toward the oxidative burst associated with fertilization by controlling the cellular redox balance and recycling oxidized glutathione. In this study, we show that treatment of a human liver carcinoma cell line, Hep-G2, with ovothiol A, isolated from Paracentrotus lividus oocytes, results in a decrease of cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. The activation of an autophagic process is revealed by phase contrast and fluorescence microscopy, together with the expression of the specific autophagic molecular markers, LC3 II and Beclin-1. The effect of ovothiol is not due to its antioxidant capacity or to hydrogen peroxide generation. The concentration of ovothiol A in the culture media, as monitored by HPLC analysis, decreased by about 24% within 30 min from treatment. The proliferation of normal human embryonic lung cells is not affected by ovothiol A. These results hint at ovothiol as a promising bioactive molecule from marine organisms able to inhibit cell proliferation in cancer cells.  相似文献

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) has been found to possess allelopathic potential and studies have been conduced to apply wheat allelopathy for biological weed control. 2,4-Dihydroxy-(2H)-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-one (DIBOA) is a common product found in wheat, corn, and rye exudates and it can be released to the environment by that way. In this report, the stability of DIBOA is studied in two soils from crop lands of wheat cv. Astron and cv. Ritmo. These varieties were selected by their concentrations of DIBOA and 2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-(2H)-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-one (DIMBOA) from aerial parts and by the bioactivities of their aqueous extracts in the growth of wheat coleoptile sections. The degradation rate of DIBOA in these soils was measured in laboratory tests during 90 h by high-pressure liquid chromatography methods. These analyses demonstrate that DIBOA was transformed primarily into 2-benzoxazolinone (BOA). This transformation was similar in both soil types with an average half-life of 43 h. The degradation studies for BOA show its biotransformation to 2-aminophenoxazin-3-one (APO) with a half-life of 2.5 days. Therefore, BOA is an intermediate product in the biotransformation from DIBOA to APO in these wheat crop soils and is consistent with previous findings. APO was not degraded after three months in soil, suggesting that its degradation rate in soil is very slow.  相似文献
