OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of florfenicol for treatment of calves with naturally occurring infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK). DESIGN: Randomized controlled field trial. ANIMALS: 63 beef calves and 80 dairy calves between 4 and 12 months of age. PROCEDURE: Calves were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups. Calves in the SC treatment group received a single dose of florfenicol (40 mg/kg [18.2 mg/lb of body weight), SC, on day 0. Calves in the IM treatment group received florfenicol (20 mg/kg [9.1 mg/lb]), IM, on days 0 and 2. Calves in the control group received injections of saline solution (0.9% NaCl), IM, on days 0 and 2. Calves were reevaluated every other day for 20 days after treatment. RESULTS: Corneal ulcers healed by day 20 in 48 of 49 (98%) calves treated with florfenicol IM, 39 of 42 (93%) calves treated with florfenicol SC, and 33 of 52 (63%) control calves. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Florfenicol administered SC (1 dose) or IM (2 doses 48 hours apart) was effective for treatment of calves with naturally occurring IBK.  相似文献

Earthquakes on dipping faults: the effects of broken symmetry   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Dynamic simulations of earthquakes on dipping faults show asymmetric near-source ground motion caused by the asymmetric geometry of such faults. The ground motion from a thrust or reverse fault is larger than that of a normal fault by a factor of 2 or more, given identical initial stress magnitudes. The motion of the hanging wall is larger than that of the footwall in both thrust (reverse) and normal earthquakes. The asymmetry between normal and thrust (reverse) faults results from time-dependent normal stress caused by the interaction of the earthquake-generated stress field with Earth's free surface. The asymmetry between hanging wall and footwall results from the asymmetric mass and geometry on the two sides of the fault.  相似文献

Acidogenic diets, commonly measured by the potential renal acid load (PRAL), have been linked with metabolic diseases including insulin resistance, hepatic dysfunction, and cardiometabolic risk. Vegan diets are linked to low dietary acid loads, but the degree of adherence to a vegan diet to demonstrate this benefit is unknown. This study compared the change in PRAL and urine pH of omnivores who followed a vegan diet for either 2, 3, or 7 days over one week. Healthy adults were recruited from a campus population and randomly assigned to one of the three groups: VEG7 (vegan diet followed for seven consecutive days); VEG3 (vegan diet followed for three evenly spaced days over one week); or VEG2 (vegan diet followed for two evenly spaced days over one week). Gender, age, and body mass index did not differ between groups (overall: 21.8 ± 2.4 y and 24.4 ± 5.6 kg/m2). Following the one week intervention, outcome measures did not vary between the VEG2 and VEG3 groups, and these groups were collapsed for the final analyses. The 24-h urine pH was raised after seven consistent days of vegan diet adherence and was unchanged after 2–3 days of vegan diet adherence over the course of a week (+0.52 ± 0.69 and ?0.02 ± 0.56 respectively, p = 0.048). However, dietary PRAL scores fell significantly in both dietary groups during the 7-day trial. Since low dietary PRAL scores have been related to improve metabolic parameters, adoption of a vegan diets for several days per week should be explored as a diet strategy to lower disease risk.  相似文献

Liquid nitrogen storage of organisms designated in the U.S. Pharmacopeia (XIX) for the assessment of antimicrobial effectiveness is described. By use of simple apparatus and procedures, 85-95% viabilities of pre-frozen cells are attained immediately upon freezing. Viability levels have remained constant over a 3-year period and the use of such inocula has considerably improved the reliability of the test. The superiority of liquid nitrogen storage for microbial test inocular over other types of storage is discussed.  相似文献

The kinetics of enzyme systems in soil can reasonably be expected to be similar to those of immobilised enzymes and therefore be modified by factors not considered in the formulation of the classical Michaelis-Menten model of enzyme kinetics. Previous studies of the p-nitrophenyl phosphatase activity of soil have assumed that the system follows Michaelis-Menten kinetics. This paper reports experiments on the p-nitrophenyl phosphatase activity of a kraznozem in which the plotting of V0, the initial rate. against V0[S]where [S] is the substrate concentration showed that the system, for this soil at least, does not follow Michaelis-Menten kinetics. An evaluation of the graphical techniques used in previous studies showed that the conclusion that the p-nitrophenyl phosphatase activity of soil follows Michaelis-Menten kinetics is based on doubtful premises. Experiments in which both the substrate and the product were measured spectrophotometrically at intervals throughout the hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl phosphate by the kraznozem yielded evidence for a model of the system which is capable of accounting for the deviation from Michaelis-Menten kinetics.  相似文献

  • 1. Experiments were carried out in the River Spey, Scotland to determine the effects of aquatic weed (Ranunculus spp.) removal on populations of freshwater pearl mussels (Margaritifera margaritifera) and juvenile salmonids (Salmo salar, Salmo trutta) and their river‐bed habitats.
  • 2. Physical removal of Ranunculus had no significant impact either on pearl mussels or on salmon and trout fry.
  • 3. Regrowth of Ranunculus post‐removal was negligible for one year, indicating that hand‐removal may be an effective control measure.
  • 4. Ranunculus roots appear to facilitate substantial depositions of fine sand that are detrimental both to pearl mussels and salmonid fry.
  • 5. The rapid spread of invasive Ranunculus is a potential threat to the conservation status of M. margaritifera in the River Spey.
