Summary Several Lathyrus species and in particular Lathyrus sativus (grass pea) have great agronomic potential as grain and forage legume, especially in drought conditions. Grass pea is rightly
considered as one of the most promising sources of calories and protein for the vast and expanding populations of drought-prone
and marginal areas of Asia and Africa. It is virtually the only species that can yield high protein food and feed under these
conditions. It is superior in yield, protein value, nitrogen fixation, and drought, flood and salinity tolerance than other
legume crops. Lathyrus species have a considerable potential in crop rotation, improving soil physical conditions; reducing the amount of disease
and weed populations, with the overall reduction of production costs. Grass pea was already in use in Neolithic times, and
presently is considered as a model crop for sustainable agriculture. As a result of the little breeding effort invested in
it compared to other legumes, grass pea cultivation has shown a regressive pattern in many areas in recent decades. This is
due to variable yield caused by sensitivity to diseases and stress factors and above all, to the presence of the neurotoxin
β-N-oxalyl-L-α,β-diaminopropionic acid (β-ODAP), increasing the danger of genetic erosion. However, both L. sativus and L. cicera are gaining interest as grain legume crops in Mediterranean-type environments and production is increasing in Ethiopia, China,
Australia and several European countries.
This paper reviews research work on Lathyrus breeding focusing mainly on biotic and abiotic resistance improvement, and lists current developments in biotechnologies

The purpose of this retrospective study is to characterize the clinical signs, laboratory values, treatment modalities and mortality outcomes related to cycad palm toxicosis in dogs and to identify medical interventions that potentially correlate with mortality. Dogs with confirmed cycad palm ingestion were identified by reviewing medical records from two private veterinary referral centres for key terms and phrases indicative of cycad palm toxicosis. Of 130 dogs included, 107 (82.3%) presented with clinical signs. A total of 2 (1.5%) died and 14 (10.8%) were euthanized. Diarrhea, lethargy and mortality were all associated with an elevated initial alanine transaminase (ALT) concentration. Overall mortality was 12.3%, with a significantly higher proportion of dogs with an ALT concentration <125 U/L surviving compared to dogs with an elevated ALT concentration. Treatment with activated charcoal reduced the odds of death among all dogs by 82% and was even more protective among dogs with an elevated initial ALT concentration. Among dogs that had an initial platelet count performed, the presence of thrombocytopenia (<200,000/μL) was a negative prognostic indicator and was associated with a significant increase in mortality. Given the high mortality rates reported for cycad palm toxicosis, it is imperative to identify early clinical indicators of mortality as well as treatments that reduce mortality. 相似文献

We studied morphological, biochemical and physiological leaf acclimation to incident Photon-Photosynthetic-Flux-Density (PPFD) in Quercus ilex (holm oak) and Quercus suber (cork oak) at Mediterranean evergreen oak woodlands of southern Portugal. Specific leaf area (SLA) decreased exponentially with increasing PPFD in both species. Q. ilex had lower SLA values than Q. suber. Leaf nitrogen, cellulose and lignin concentration (leaf area-based) scaled positively with PPFD. Maximum rate of carboxylation (Vcmax), capacity for maximum photosynthetic electron transport (Jmax), rate of triose-P utilization (VTPU) and the rate of nonphotorespiratory light respiration (Rd) were also positively correlated with PPFD in both Quercus species, when expressed in leaf area but not on leaf mass basis. Q suber showed to have higher photosynthetic potential (Vcmax, Jmaxm and VTPUm) and a higher nitrogen efficient nitrogen use than Q.ilex. Leaf chlorophyll concentration increased with decreasing PPFD, improving apparent quantum use efficiency (Φ) in both Quercus species. We concluded that, in Q.ilex and Q.suber, leaf structural plasticity is a stronger determinant for leaf acclimation to PPFD than biochemical and physiological plasticity. 相似文献

The objective of this paper is to critically review and summarize available scientific and lay literature, and ongoing studies on human and porcine cysticercosis in Mozambique to identify knowledge gaps and direct immediate and long-term research efforts. Data on the spatial distribution and prevalence of the disease in human and swine populations are scarce and fragmented. Human serological studies have shown that 15-21% of apparently healthy adults were positive for cysticercosis antibodies or antigen, while in neuropsychiatric patients seroprevalence was as high as 51%. Slaughterhouse records indicate a countrywide occurrence of porcine cysticercosis, while studies have shown that 10-35% of pigs tested were seropositive for cysticercosis antibodies or antigen. Current research in Mozambique includes studies on the epidemiology, molecular biology, diagnosis and control of the disease. Future research efforts should be directed at better understanding the epidemiology of the disease in Mozambique, particularly risk factors for its occurrence and spread in human and swine populations, documenting the socio-economic impact of the disease, identifying critical control points and evaluating the feasibility and epidemiological impact of control measures and development of local level diagnostic tools for use in humans and swine. 相似文献

Adult female dogs were immunized with 0.5 mg bovine luteinizing hormone receptor (LH-R) encapsulated in a silastic subdermal implant and subsequently with four intramuscular booster injections of 0.1 mg LH-R each. Circulating LH-R antibody was detected in the sera 3 weeks post-implant. The appearance of LH-R antibody was associated with a decline in the serum progesterone concentrations to a range of 0–0.5 ng/ml until day 365 in the immunized dogs in comparison with a range of 5–10 ng in the control animals, suggesting a lack of ovulation and corpus luteum function in immunized dogs. The immunized dogs did not show signs of `standing heat' and failed to ovulate when induced by LH-RH challenge. Serum oestradiol levels, however, remained in the range of 30–40 pg/ml in both the immunized and the control dogs. With the decline in the antibody titres, the hormonal profile and vaginal cytology returned to a fertile state and the dogs exhibited signs of `standing heat', as well as vaginal bleeding. Dogs immunized with LH-R did not show any serious metabolic, local or systemic adverse effects. The hypothalamic–pituitary gonadal axis remained intact as indicated by little difference in pituitary LH levels between control and immunized animals, and by the release of LH by LH-RH challenge. These studies demonstrate that active immunization of female dogs with LH-R could immunomodulate ovarian function to cause a reversible state of infertility. It may be postulated that, due to extensive interspecies homology, a recombinant LH receptor-based immunocontraceptive vaccine may also be effective in other vertebrates. 相似文献

This study aimed to evaluate sunflower cake feed in commercial cut yields and chemical and sensory attributes of goat meat. Thirty‐two castrated male goats were distributed in four levels (0, 8, 16 and 24%) of sunflower cake supplementation. The animals were slaughtered and the carcasses were placed in a cold chamber and sectioned into five anatomical regions corresponding to commercial cuts. Samples of the Longissimus lumborum muscle were analyzed for chemical composition and sensory quality. The chemical composition and pH were not affected by the treatments. The smell, taste and ‘goatiness’ of the aroma and flavor of the meat were also unaffected by the treatments. The appearance, tenderness and juiciness of the meat differed by treatment. The highest level (24%) of sunflower cake increased meat tenderness; however, according to the tasters there was reduced softness, although none of the samples were rejected by the tasters. Sunflower cake can be added to the diet at a level of up to 16% without altering the quantitative and qualitative attributes of the meat. 相似文献

The expression of melatonin type 1 (MT1) and FSH (FSHR) receptors in caprine ovaries and the effects of these hormones on the in vitro development of isolated pre‐antral follicles were evaluated. Follicles (≤200 μm) were cultured for 12 days in α‐MEM (control) or melatonin (100 or 1000 pg/ml) or sequential melatonin medium (100 pg/ml: from day 0 to day 6; 1000 pg/ml: from day 6 to day 12; experiment 1) and in control or sequential FSH (100 ng/ml from day 0 to day 6; 500 ng/ml from day 6 to day 12) or sequential melatonin or this latter plus sequential FSH (experiment 2). MT1 and FSHR expressions were observed in granulosa cells from secondary and antral follicles. The oocytes from primordial and primary follicles also express FSHR. Sequential melatonin increased the percentage of normal follicles and oocyte recovery compared with the control or melatonin (1000 pg/ml) at day 12. In experiment 2, all the treatments increased the normal follicles and growth compared with the control. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the presence of MT1 and FSHR in caprine ovaries. The addition of increased concentrations of melatonin (sequential medium) or FSH can be used to promote the in vitro development of caprine pre‐antral follicles. 相似文献

In this study, we evaluated the effect of diets with various concentrations of estradiol-17β (E2) on the feminization, growth and survival of juvenile fat snook. Over a 45-day period, the juveniles were fed with five diets containing 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg E2/kg feed. Three replicates were run for each diet. After this hormonal treatment, the fishes were transferred to 1-m3 net cages, where they remained for 12 months. During this period, they were fed a commercial diet without added hormones. During the feminization, the control fish grew more than those in the other treatments, and the survival rates did not differ significantly among the treatments. At the end of the experiment growth did not differ among the treatments. In the control treatment, 80.85 % of the fish were male, and the females were significantly larger than the males. All of the treatments with E2 produced 100 % females. No intersex fish were found in this study. This research showed that it is possible to obtain 100 % fat snook females using feeds with 25 mg E2/kg for 45 days without impairing the growth or survival of the fish. 相似文献

Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus is one of the most widely distributed tick in the world. The control of the parasite is based mainly on the use of chemical acaricides, which are produced from a limited set of molecules. These drugs induce selection of acaricide-resistant ticks, and are an important source of environmental pollution. An approach based on anti-tick vaccines may circumvent these obstacles. Characterization of the physiological function of tick molecules may be useful to develop new vaccines. Previously, we reported the ability of some tick proteins as inducers of protective immune response. Vaccination studies using tick proteins like native (nBYC), recombinant (rBYC) egg-yolk aspartic endopeptidase and cysteine endopeptidase (VTDCE) from R. microplus and glutathione S-transferase (Hl-GST) from Haemaphysalis longicornis demonstrated the immunogenicity and antigenicity of these proteins in bovines. Eventually, immunization with these proteins triggered a partial immune response against R. microplus infestation in cattle, manifested mainly as a reduction in egg fertility (7.7% and 13.9% for nBYC, 5.9% for rBYC; 4.7% for VTDCE, 7.9% for Hl-GST), and in the number of fully engorged ticks (18.2% for rBYC, 14.6% for VTDCE, 53% for Hl-GST). The data so far obtained suggest that these proteins have potential to be used as antigens in an anti-tick vaccine. Other proteins involved in tick embryogenesis also have this potential, like THAP and BmCl1, which are enzymes with key roles in vitellin and hemoglobin hydrolysis. Moreover, the identification of analogous proteins present in other tick species may bring information about the way to develop a vaccine against multiple tick species which can help to solve the problem faced by numerous countries where animals are parasitized by more than one tick species. The aim of the present review is to comprehensibly summarize the data obtained in the last few years by our collaborative research, discussing the efforts we have made to find antigens efficient enough for a cattle tick-controlling vaccine. This review discusses tick physiology studies aimed at the selection of possible targets, characterization of the selected proteins with emphasis on their biochemical and immunological aspects and results of vaccine trials on bovines. 相似文献
