Nursery seedbeds sown with lodgepole pine, Scots pine, Douglasfir, Japanese larch and Sitka spruce were covered with clearpolythene cloches for 0, 8, 13 or 18 weeks from sowing. Sitkaspruce germinated poorly and was not studied further. In bothpine species longer durations of cloche cover increased thenumber and length of stem units resulting in taller 1 + 0 seedlings.The number of internodes held at the apex for elongation inthe second season was also increased but transplant shock preventedfull expression of this potential such that differences betweenthe treatments were reduced. Only when covered for 18 weeksdid Douglas fir and Japanese larch produce 1 + 0 seedlings whichwere taller than the uncovered treatments. Through the productionof summer shoots in their second season Douglasfir and Japanese larch were able to compensate partially forthe reduction in spring shoot length caused bytransplanting. 相似文献

Apparent digestibility and availability coefficients for protein and amino acids in menhaden fish meal (MEN), pet‐food grade (PBM‐pet,) and feed‐grade poultry by‐product meal (PBM‐feed) were determined for market‐size (500 g) sunshine bass in two consecutive trials using passive netting (1.6 mm mesh) followed by manual stripping of faeces. A reference diet resembling a commercial feed was formulated to meet or exceed all known nutritional requirements of hybrid striped bass. Test diets were formulated to contain a 70 : 30 mixture of reference diet to test ingredient with chromic oxide (1%) serving as the inert marker. Diets were extruded under commercial conditions and the reference diet was fed for two weeks in order to acclimate fish to experimental conditions. Each diet was randomly assigned to triplicate tanks containing 30 fish each. Fish were fed their respective diet twice daily to apparent satiation for two weeks, with faecal collections being conducted on the 7th and 14th day, in each trial. ADC values determined in the net method were highly variable and generally lower than ADCs obtained by stripping. Consistently lower and highly variable chromium concentrations were found in the net method faecal samples and suggest that marker loss relative to nutrient content, or dilution of marker with non‐faecal matter, on the net collectors influenced results in that trial. In contrast, the standard errors of ADCs determined in the strip method were less than 5 percentage points in most cases. Protein digestibility ranged from a low of 51% (PBM‐feed) to a high of 87% (PBM‐pet) in the net method, and from a low of 80% (PBM‐feed) to a high of 99% (MEN) in the strip method. With the exception of Lys, no differences in amino acid availabilities among diets were found in the net method. In the strip method, protein digestibility and amino acid availabilities in MEN were generally greater than those found in PBM‐pet or PBM‐feed, whereas ADCs were not significantly different between the two poultry by‐products. Based on the conditions of the present study, net collection of faecal matter can not be recommended for determining the digestibility of nutrients in feed ingredients for market‐size sunshine bass. Digestibility coefficients obtained by the strip method for feed and petfood grades poultry by‐product were higher than those previously reported and will be facilitate more efficient and economical diet formulations for larger sunshine bass. 相似文献

Abstract. In 1991, the progeny of female Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., were sampled at emergence from sites in 16 rivers in western and northern Scotland. The progeny of farmed females that had escaped from sea-cages were identified by detecting the presence of maternal canthaxanthin in the juveniles' pigment load. Canthaxanthin was detected among fish sampled from 14 of the 16 rivers examined. Overall, 109 of the 2373 fry sampled carried canthaxanthin with an average frequency over all the rivers examined of 5·1%. This value will underestimate the real frequency of occurrence of the progeny of escaped farmed salmon: some escapees do not contain canthaxanthin and male fish do not contribute to the pigment load of their progeny. 相似文献

Through the use of dialysis sacks, containing the repository antimalarial CI-501, implanted intraperitoneally into rats, evidence has been obtained indicating a local rather than a systemic reservoir of the drug. Economical, nutritious diets for hybrid striped bass (HSTB) are required for the continued expansion and sustainability of this industry. Turkey meal (TM) is a by‐product of the US turkey industry and is a potentially‐valuable local, alternative protein source for use in aquaculture diets because of its excellent nutritional composition and quality. TM may substitute for more expensive fish meal (FM)‐based diets; however, there are no published data with regard to using this ingredient in sunshine bass diets. Therefore, a 16‐week feeding trial was conducted with juvenile (36 g) sunshine bass (Morone chrysops × Morone saxatilis) to evaluate growth, feed conversion and body composition when fed diets with decreasing levels of FM (300, 200, 100 and 0 g kg?1) and increasing levels of turkey meal (0, 97, 175 and 264 g kg?1). Four practical diets were formulated to contain 400 g kg?1 protein and similar energy levels. Twenty fish were stocked into each of the 12, 1200‐L circular tanks and were fed twice daily ad libitum. At the conclusion of the feeding trial, there were no significant (P > 0.05) differences in final mean weight, percentage weight gain, specific growth rate and feed conversion ratio among treatments, which averaged 363.7 g, 904.3%, 2.02% day?1 and 1.73, respectively. Percentage survival of fish fed diet 4 (0 g kg?1 FM and 264 g kg?1 TM) was significantly (P > 0.05) lower (survival = 88.3%) than fish fed diet 3 (100 g kg?1 FM and 175 g kg?1 TM; survival = 95%), but not different from fish fed diet 1 (survival = 92.5%) and fish fed diet 2 (survival = 93.3%). Fillet weight and amount of abdominal fat were not significantly different among all treatments and averaged 258 and 58 g kg?1, respectively. Fish fed diet 1 (300 g kg?1 FM, 0 g kg?1 TM) and diet 2 (200 g kg?1 FM and 970 g kg?1 TM) had a significantly (P < 0.05) lower hepatosomatic index (2.83 and 3.01, respectively) than fish fed diet 4 (3.33), but not different (P > 0.05) compared to fish fed diet 3 (3.14). Lipid in the fillet of fish fed diet 2 (197 g kg?1) was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than fish fed all other diets; and the percentage lipid in the fillet of fish fed diet 1 (126 g kg?1) was significantly lower than fish fed diets 2 and 4, but not different (P >0.05) compared to fish fed diet 3. Fillet moisture, protein and ash were similar among fish fed all diets and averaged 748, 798 g kg?1 and 51.0 g kg?1 (dry‐matter basis), respectively. The amino acid composition of fillets was similar among all treatments with a few slight significant differences. Results from the present study indicate that tank‐grown sunshine bass can be fed a diet containing 264 g kg?1 TM with 0 g kg?1 FM, compared to diets containing up to 300 g kg?1 FM, without adverse effects on weight gain, growth rate, feed conversion and body composition. Further research should be conducted using lower‐protein diets to determine minimum protein level for tank‐grown sunshine bass. 相似文献
