The acidic properties of lignins from the native vegetation of a virgin Ella loamy sand and the humic acids, the 1, 4-dioxane extractable humic fraction and residual humic acids from the virgin and cultivated soils were investigated by determining solid-state cation exchange capacities for Cu and Ca and by non-aqueous potentiometric titration, using potassium methoxide in a benzene-methanol mixture as titrant. The lignins and soil dioxane extracts were titrated in pyridine; the humic acids in dimethylformamide. Platinized Pt and CH3OH modified calomel electrodes formed the electrode combination. The CEC of the humic acids were much higher than the CEC of lignins with both cations but the Cu: Ca absorption ratios were less for humic acids than for lignins. Titration curves of lignins showed two potential breaks with total acidities of 960 to 1,190 me/100 g. Titration curves of the humic acids showed three to six potential breaks while curves of the soil dioxane extracts showed three and four. The total acidities of the two types of humic isolates were 1,100-1,200 me/100 g. The equivalent weights of most lignins and humic materials were very similar although the acid groups might be different with respect to types and acid strength. Lignins from other plant materials and humic isolates from other soils were also investigated by non-aqueous titration to determine the general applicability of the results obtained with isolates from the Ella soils. 相似文献

Reasons for performing study: High numbers of racehorses in training are reported to have gastric ulceration. Gross lesion scoring systems exist, but there is no fixed protocol with which to record gastric microscopic findings. In man, the histological classification of stomach lesions helps in the identification of recognised and emerging aetiologies of gastric disease and aids accurate comparison of findings between studies. In horses, the development of such a system would therefore be of benefit. Objectives: To develop a pathological scoring system that can be applied to examine samples of the equine stomach at biopsy and post mortem. Methods and results: The equine gastritis grading (EGG) system was developed initially using horse stomachs at post mortem. The protocol involved sampling tissue from 5 fixed locations within the squamous and glandular regions. Histological examination recorded both type and degree of inflammatory infiltrate and the presence of erosions, ulceration or any other reactive change in each slide. These results were combined and an overall diagnosis of gastritis type given for each stomach. Conclusions and potential relevance: This is the first example of a complete pathological scoring system developed specifically for recording gastric lesions in the horse. It provides a thorough and repeatable method with which to examine the equine stomach in microscopic detail. It can be used in diagnostic or research situations and the consistency of the information gathered will enable accurate comparison of data between different studies. It aims to give an indication as to the currently undetermined pathological variations seen in the stomach of healthy and diseased horses, as well as increasing the understanding of the pathogenesis of gastritis and gastric ulceration. Reasons for performing study: Gastric ulceration is now widely recognised as an important disease in high performance horses. Little is known about gastric histopathology in healthy or diseased animals; a comprehensive assessment would enhance interpretation of gross findings through assessment of their accuracy and allow for identification of lesion variety and pathogenesis in different anatomical regions of the stomach. Objectives: To investigate the true extent and variety of gastric lesions in a mixed population of mature horses at post mortem. Methods: Stomachs were removed from a mixed population of 21 horses at post mortem. Mucosal abnormalities were recorded in photographic and written form. Representative samples from all gross lesions were taken for histopathology and processed routinely. Special stains including Gram, PAS and Warthin Starry, were used when appropriate. Pathological classification of lesion type using both gross and histological appearances was performed. Results: Classification of lesions within the squamous region included hyperkeratosis, punctate scars, diffuse erosions/ulcerations and margo injuria; and within the glandular region, hyperaemia, focal erosions and ulcerations. Glandular metaplasia was recognised for the first time in the equine stomach. No Helicobacter‐like organisms were detected in association with lesion development. Conclusions and potential relevance: This study used gross and histological examination to highlight the large variety of naturally occurring gastric lesions in a mixed population of horses. Analysis of the pathogenesis of lesion development is now possible. Further research regarding the range of pathology in larger, more diverse groups of horses is required. 相似文献

Economical, nutritious diets for hybrid striped bass (HSTB) are required for the continued expansion and sustainability of this industry. Turkey meal (TM) is a by‐product of the US turkey industry and is a potentially‐valuable local, alternative protein source for use in aquaculture diets because of its excellent nutritional composition and quality. TM may substitute for more expensive fish meal (FM)‐based diets; however, there are no published data with regard to using this ingredient in sunshine bass diets. Therefore, a 16‐week feeding trial was conducted with juvenile (36 g) sunshine bass (Morone chrysops × Morone saxatilis) to evaluate growth, feed conversion and body composition when fed diets with decreasing levels of FM (300, 200, 100 and 0 g kg?1) and increasing levels of turkey meal (0, 97, 175 and 264 g kg?1). Four practical diets were formulated to contain 400 g kg?1 protein and similar energy levels. Twenty fish were stocked into each of the 12, 1200‐L circular tanks and were fed twice daily ad libitum. At the conclusion of the feeding trial, there were no significant (P > 0.05) differences in final mean weight, percentage weight gain, specific growth rate and feed conversion ratio among treatments, which averaged 363.7 g, 904.3%, 2.02% day?1 and 1.73, respectively. Percentage survival of fish fed diet 4 (0 g kg?1 FM and 264 g kg?1 TM) was significantly (P > 0.05) lower (survival = 88.3%) than fish fed diet 3 (100 g kg?1 FM and 175 g kg?1 TM; survival = 95%), but not different from fish fed diet 1 (survival = 92.5%) and fish fed diet 2 (survival = 93.3%). Fillet weight and amount of abdominal fat were not significantly different among all treatments and averaged 258 and 58 g kg?1, respectively. Fish fed diet 1 (300 g kg?1 FM, 0 g kg?1 TM) and diet 2 (200 g kg?1 FM and 970 g kg?1 TM) had a significantly (P < 0.05) lower hepatosomatic index (2.83 and 3.01, respectively) than fish fed diet 4 (3.33), but not different (P > 0.05) compared to fish fed diet 3 (3.14). Lipid in the fillet of fish fed diet 2 (197 g kg?1) was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than fish fed all other diets; and the percentage lipid in the fillet of fish fed diet 1 (126 g kg?1) was significantly lower than fish fed diets 2 and 4, but not different (P >0.05) compared to fish fed diet 3. Fillet moisture, protein and ash were similar among fish fed all diets and averaged 748, 798 g kg?1 and 51.0 g kg?1 (dry‐matter basis), respectively. The amino acid composition of fillets was similar among all treatments with a few slight significant differences. Results from the present study indicate that tank‐grown sunshine bass can be fed a diet containing 264 g kg?1 TM with 0 g kg?1 FM, compared to diets containing up to 300 g kg?1 FM, without adverse effects on weight gain, growth rate, feed conversion and body composition.
