Malaria parasites adopt host cell superoxide dismutase   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
Aerobic organisms depend on superoxide dismutase to suppress the formation of dangerous species of activated oxygen. Intraerythrocytic stages of the malaria parasite exist within a highly aerobic environment and cause the generation of increased amounts of activated oxygen. Plasmodium berghei in mice was found to derive a substantial amount of superoxide dismutase activity from the host cell cytoplasm. Plasmodia isolated from mouse red cells contained mouse superoxide dismutase, whereas rat-derived parasites contained the rat enzyme. This is believed to be the first example of the acquisition of a host cell enzyme by an intracellular parasite.  相似文献

Being downwind of eastern and midwestern industrial centers, the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest offers a prime location to monitor long-term trends in atmospheric chemistry. Continuous measurements of precipitation chemistry during the last 10 yr provide a measure of recent changes in precipitation inputs of H ion. The weighted average pH of precipitation during 1964–65 to 1973–74 was 4.14, with a minimum annual value of 4.03 in 1970–71 and a maximum annual value of 4.21 in 1973–74. The sum of all cations except H ion decreased from 51 μeq 1?1 in 1964–65 to 23 μeq 1?1 in 1973–74 providing a significant drop in neutralizing capacity during this period. Based upon regression analysis, the input in equivalents of H ion and nitrate increased by 1.4-fold and 2.3-fold respectively, from 1964–65 to 1973–74. Input of all other ions either decreased or showed no trend. Based upon a stoichiometric formation process in which a sea-salt, anionic component is subtracted from the total anions in precipitation, SO4 =, contribution to acidity dropped from 83% to 66%, whereas NO3 ? increased from 15% to 30% during 1964–65 to 1973–74. The increased annual input of H ion at Hubbard Brook during the past 10 yr is highly correlated with the increased input of nitrate in precipitation.  相似文献

The controlled acidification of a two-basin lake is described. The lake was divided by a vinyl curtain in 1984; acidification of one basin began in 1985. Target pH values of 5.5, 5.0 and 4.5 are planned for 2-yr increments. Biotic and chemical responses and internal alkalinity generation are being studied. Baseline studies, initial results at pH 5.5, and predictions of lake responses to acidification are described.  相似文献

The Sundarban forest in southern Bengal was for many centuries a frontier zone—an economic frontier for communities of wet rice farmers who brought with them technologies and forms of social organization from points further to the west; a political frontier for large centralized states expanding from North India; and a cultural frontier for the worldwide community of Muslims. This paper investigates the forces that, between the thirteenth and eighteenth centuries, lay behind the transformation of Bengal's natural forest into rice paddy, a transformation that was accompanied by conversion to Islam, state formation, and the evolution of new land tenures.  相似文献

Yield-component partitioning of the individual cranberry upright (fruiting shoot) was undertaken using a model which included upright length, number of leaves, flowers, berries and seeds, and fruit weight. Repeat cropping of the upright during the following year was also modelled and tested. Fruit set was a major component of yield, but its action was sometimes indirect. Less important components were the number of seeds per berry, berry enlargement per seed, and upright length. Measures of antagonism of “fruiting” to floral initiation were obtained which partially explain the biennial bearing habit of uprights.  相似文献
