Three-component wide-angle seismic data acquired in southern Tibet during Project INDEPTH show strong P-to-S converted reflections from reflectors that are aligned at a depth of approximately 15 kilometers beneath the northern Yadong-Gulu rift. These converted reflections are locally higher in amplitude than the corresponding P-wave reflections. Modeling of reflection mode conversion as a function of incidence angle indicates that this condition obtains for a reflector that is a solid over fluid interface; it is not typical of a solid-solid interface. The likely candidates for a fluid trapped within the crystalline crust of southern Tibet are granitic magma and water (brine).  相似文献   

Single-molecule measurement of protein folding kinetics

In order to investigate the behavior of single molecules under conditions far from equilibrium, we have coupled a microfabricated laminar-flow mixer to a confocal optical system. This combination enables time-resolved measurement of F?rster resonance energy transfer after an abrupt change in solution conditions. Observations of a small protein show the evolution of the intramolecular distance distribution as folding progresses. This technique can expose subpopulations, such as unfolded protein under conditions favoring the native structure, that would be obscured in equilibrium experiments.  相似文献

Animals used in sport should be treated as required to ensure animal welfare but any such use of medication should also be controlled to ensure integrity. Pharmacokinetic studies on groups of six greyhounds were performed to measure plasma and urine levels of carprofen and firocoxib to inform medication control advice. Using the standard methodology for medication control the Irrelevant Plasma Concentration was determined as 20 and 2 ng/mL for carprofen and firocoxib, respectively. The Irrelevant Urine Concentration was also determined as 0.3 and 2 ng/mL for carprofen and firocoxib, respectively. These Irrelevant Plasma and Urine Concentrations will allow laboratory Screening Limits, Detection Times and Withdrawal Time advice to be determined and publicised by regulators of greyhound racing. The Screening Limits will also inform Recommended Limits of Detection if meat-containing residues of these medications are fed to greyhounds.  相似文献   

The effects of crowding on mackerel (Scomber scombrus L.) — Physical condition and mortality

Series of trials in which mackerel (Scomber scombrus L.) were confined in keepnets at different stocking densities are described. From simple confinement trials it was found that 50% of the fish died after 48 h at a stocking density of 30 fish m⁻³, equivalent to 6.5 kg m⁻³. Trials in which fish were held at stocking densities, and for a duration, comparable to those experienced in a “dried up” purse seine prior to “slipping”, showed that up to 90% of “slipped” fish died within 48 h of release. The primary cause of death was probably physical damage, particularly skin loss, caused by abrasion, although there is some evidence that mackerel have a healing process which can accommodate minor skin abrasions. A tagging trial showed a small but significant increase in mortality due to the tagging procedure.  相似文献
