Kafirins are stored proteins that negatively affect the nutritional quality of sorghum grain. Kafirin concentration and other chemical characteristics were determined in 12 sorghum hybrids and varied significantly, from 58% (HB1) to 42% (HB12) as percent total protein. Kafirin concentration correlated negatively with crude protein (CP) (−0.49), with acid detergent fiber (−0.40), apparent metabolizable energy (−0.61), and true metabolizable energy corrected for N (−0.63). HB12 was the hybrid with the lowest content of kafirins, amylose and tannins, and the highest content of apparent metabolizable energy. No differences were observed in the concentration of starch, but differences were found in apparent metabolizable energy (3325–2944 kcal kg−1) probably due to a greater availability of starch, related to differences in kafirin concentration.  相似文献

This study was conducted to describe the ultrasonographic appearance and technique for the evaluation of sciatic nerve (ScN) in cats. An anatomical study was carried out using six feline cadavers to determine anatomic landmarks. An ultrasonographic 'in vitro' study was performed using eight pelvic limbs from four fresh feline cadavers to assess the ScN in three regions (glutea, femoralis and popliteal) using a 4-13MHz linear transducer. Five healthy adult experimental cats were employed for an 'in vivo' ultrasonographic study of the ScN using the same protocol described for the 'in vitro' study. The ultrasonographic images of the ScN were well correlated with those obtained in the anatomical study. The ScN was easily identified in all the approaches. The ScN was observed as a hypoechoic structure with internal echoes, outlined by hyperechoic lines. This study shows the usefulness of ultrasound to evaluate the entire pathology of the ScN in the cat.  相似文献

A comparative study on the suitability of one compost and two vermicomposts, obtained from the same batch of tomato‐crop waste, as growth media for ornamental plant production was carried out. Each material was mixed with Sphagnum peat at 100 : 0, 75 : 25, 50 : 50, 25 : 75, and 0 : 100 (peat control) proportions by volume. Two ornamentals (Calendula officinalis, Viola cornuta) were sown and grown in the 13 substrates. Substrates were characterized physically and chemically. Seed germination, total leaf chlorophyll (SPAD units), plant growth, and plant nutrient concentrations were determined. The compost and the vermicomposts were markedly different from peat. Compost and the vermicomposts had greater bulk density and lower total porosity than peat. Compost had larger aeration and lower water‐holding capacity than vermicomposts and peat. Compost and vermicomposts were alkaline (pH = 8.8 on average) whilst peat was acidic (pH = 5.9). Electrical conductivity was low in peat (0.23 dS m–1) and vermicomposts (0.65 dS m–1), and high in compost (2.85 dS m–1) due to the high concentrations of K+ and SO$ _4^{2-} $ . Mixing compost and vermicomposts with peat produced substrates with intermediate characteristics. Physical properties were within adequate range for all mixes except for the compost ones. pH was within adequate range only in pure peat, and salinity was extremely high in the compost mixes. Compost was phytotoxic, as shown by the strong reduction of seed germination, chlorophyll content, and plant growth of both ornamentals. Vermicomposts did not affect seed germination but reduced plant growth, though much less than compost. Mixing these materials with peat improved germination and growth. The diluted materials (compost at the 25 : 75 and vermicomposts at the 50 : 50 and 25 : 75 proportions) produced good‐quality plants.  相似文献

Winter wheat was grown in Mitscherlich pots on soils obtained from 12 fields from the provinces of Salamanca, Valladolid, and Zamora (Spain). The pots were fertilized with eight fertilizer treatments which were combinations of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potasium, and the crop was watered as necessary. Plants were harvested at flowering and plants were divided into different parts: leaves, ears, and the remaining vegetative matter. Dry weight was recorded and the mineral content determined. The relationships between the elements were fitted into straight line, potential, logarithmic, inverse, and quadratic functions. The results showed less relationship among elements in the leaf and their homologous in the shoot than among elements in the leaf and their homologous in the ears, although the former had greater significance especially for the cations. The potential function quantifies the relationship of the leaf‐shoot satisfactorily except for nitrogen and potassium for which potential and inverse, respectively, was the best fit. The interaction between mineral elements within the leaves is expressed better by the second degree equations and by the straight line equations as compared to the others.  相似文献

Solution pH is among the most important parameters that influence heavy metal biosorption. This work presents a kinetic study of the effects of pH on chromium biosorption onto Cupressus lusitanica Mill bark from aqueous Cr(VI) or Cr(III) solutions and proposes a mechanism of adsorption. At all assayed contact times, the optimum pH for chromium biosorption from the Cr(III) solution was 5.0; in contrast, optimum pH for chromium biosorption from the Cr(VI) solution varied depending on contact time. The kinetic models that satisfactorily described the chromium biosorption processes from the Cr(III) and Cr(VI) solutions were the Elovich and pseudo second-order models, respectively. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy studies suggest that phenolic compounds present on C. lusitanica Mill bark play an important role in chromium biosorption from the Cr(III) solution. On the other hand, chromium biosorption from the Cr(VI) solution involved carboxyl groups produced on the bark by redox reactions between oxygen-containing groups and Cr(VI), and these were in turn responsible for the biosorption of Cr(III) produced by Cr(VI) reduction.  相似文献

Feline aggression towards people has a smaller incidence than canine aggression, but also represents an important public health problem. The aim of this work was to analyse feline aggression reported towards people, to estimate its incidence and to assess the risk factors involved. The information was obtained from the Public Health Centres in the Valencian Region (Spain). A total of 936 acts of feline aggression were analysed. Cats inflicted 8% of all animal bites reported. The annual average was 6.36 feline aggression incidents per 100,000 people. Most aggressive incidents occurred during the summer months. Children (0-14 years old) and women were more likely to be bitten. Wounds were mainly punctures, single, and mild, and were located mostly on the hands. In children, the head and neck areas were affected much more than in adults. The cats involved in incidents were mostly Siamese, female and owned; these cats mainly attacked their owners. Most occurrences were a defensive response by the cat.  相似文献

The WaDI (water delivery for irrigation) model deals with the relations between the collective water supply and the demand within irrigated schemes. It is based on a separate modelling of the water supply and demand, including (i) a simplified representation of the hydraulic structure, characteristics and organizational parameters of the scheme, (ii) an assessment of the water demand of farms based on their total irrigated area, cropping pattern and irrigation practices, (iii) a farm typology, (iv) a confrontation between water demand and supply at each node of the scheme from pumping plants to tertiary canals, and (v) calculation of response factors between supply and demand during the peak demand period. “What-if” scenarios are simulated in order to enhance the stakeholders’ capacity to plan strategic decisions such as water delivery allocation rules or infrastructure investments. WaDI was implemented on two Brazilian schemes. It allowed broadening the stakeholders’ limited representation of collective water supply and demand into a more comprehensive understanding of these relations. The approach however showed some limits, along with the difficulty of assessing the real impact on the stakeholders’ capacity for strategic planning.  相似文献

A fungal strain possibly capable of removing hexavalent chromium was to be isolated from industrial effluent from a leather factory located in the city of Guadalajara, state of Jalisco, Mexico. The strain was identified as Trichoderma inhamatum by the D1/D2 domain sequence of the 28S rDNA gene. Batch cultures of T. inhamatum in media containing initial Cr(VI) concentrations from 0.83 to 2.43 mM Cr(VI) were prepared. Experimental results suggest that the fungus is capable of transforming hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium; a transformation of a highly toxic contaminant to a low toxic form. The specific and volumetric rates of Cr(VI) reduction by T. inhamatum cultures decreased as the initial Cr(VI) concentration increased. The fungus exhibited a remarkable capacity to tolerate and completely reduce Cr(VI) concentrations up to 2.43 mM. These results indicate that the T. inhamatum fungal strain may have potential applications in bioremediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated wastewaters.  相似文献

This study was conducted to validate an ultrasound-guided technique to block the sciatic nerve in cats. An anatomical study was first carried out in four feline cadavers to evaluate the feasibility of the glutea (cranial and caudal), femoris and poplitea ultrasonographical approaches for the sciatic nerve block. The results showed that the femoris approach was optimal because the region was free of vascular and bony structures, and the needle was easily visualised in-plane. Then, the efficacy of the femoris ultrasonographical approach to block the sciatic nerve was tested in six healthy adult experimental cats. A dose of 2 mg/kg lidocaine 2% diluted in saline to a final volume of 1 ml was administered in all cats. The blockade was successful in all cases and the cats recovered uneventfully. This study shows the usefulness of the femoris approach in performing an ultrasound-guided blockade of the sciatic nerve in cats.  相似文献

This prospective study assessed a ventral ultrasound-guided suprainguinal approach to block the femoral nerve (FN) in dogs. The anatomical features of the FN were evaluated in four canine cadavers. In another five cadavers, the FN was located by ultrasound-guidance and the accuracy of this technique was evaluated by injection of black ink and posterior evaluation of the degree of staining of the nerves. In five live dogs, the FN was blocked with 2% lidocaine. The distribution of lidocaine around the nerve and the presence of motor deficit were evaluated. The FN was easily located and accurately blocked in all cases. This new ultrasound-guided approach was reliable for blocking the FN and might be a suitable alternative to the traditional approaches described to block the FN in the dog.  相似文献
