A retrospective study of laminitis was carried out to identify risk factors associated with this disease on an East Anglian farm with approximately 1000 animals living in an area of 1000 acres. Medical records between January 1997 and May 2000 and between April 2005 and March 2008 were reviewed, and the age, sex, weight (kg), height (inches [in] and hands [H]) and weight-to-height ratio (kg/in) was recorded. The prevalence, incidence and seasonality of laminitis were determined and their relationship to the monthly temperature, rainfall and hours of sunshine was evaluated. Averaged over the six years, the highest prevalence (2.6 per cent) and incidence (16 cases/1000 animals) of laminitis occurred in May. The findings of a multivariate analysis revealed that females (P=0.007, odds ratio [OR] 1.46, 95 per cent confidence interval [CI] 1.1053 to 1.9646) and light animals (P ≤ 0.001, OR=0.995, 95 per cent CI =0.9932 to 0.9963) had the greatest risk of developing laminitis. A positive association was found between hours of sunshine and incidence (P=0.007, relative risk [RR] 1.009, 95 per cent CI 1.001 to 1.012) and prevalence (P=0.002, RR 1.008, 95 per cent CI 1.003 to 1.012) of laminitis. OBJECTIVE: To compare blood lipid concentrations and lipoprotein patterns for captive and wild American black bears (Ursus americanus). ANIMALS: 7 captive and 9 wild adult (> or = 4 years old) black bears. PROCEDURE: Blood was collected from 2 groups of captive black bears (groups A and B) and 1 group of wild black bears (group C). Blood triglyceride (TG) and cholesterol concentrations were compared among groups. Plasma lipoproteins were isolated by use of a self-generating gradient of iodixanol, and lipoprotein patterns were compared between groups A and B. RESULTS: Captive bears (mean +/- SD, 187.8 +/- 44.4 kg) weighed significantly more than wild bears (mean, 104.8 +/- 41.4 kg), but mean body weight did not differ between groups A and B. Mean blood TG concentrations for groups B (216.8 +/- 16.0 mg/dL) and C (190.7 +/- 34.0 mg/dL) were significantly higher than that of group A (103.9 +/- 25.3 mg/dL). Mean blood cholesterol concentration was also significantly higher for group B (227.8 +/- 8.2 mg/dL) than for groups A (171.7 +/- 35.5 mg/dL) or C (190.8 +/- 26.8 mg/dL). Mean very-low-density lipoprotein TG and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations were 2- and 3-fold higher, respectively, for group B, compared with concentrations for group A. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Blood lipid concentrations vary significantly among populations of black bears. Plasma lipoprotein patterns of captive bears differed significantly between colonies and may have reflected differences in diet or management practices. 相似文献

meteorological satellites have previously been shown to be quite useful for monitoring vegetation dynamics at scales ranging
from regional (104 km2) to global. In this report, we demonstrate that these same data can be used to monitor potential breeding habitat for a highly
mobile, granivorous African weaver-bird, the red-billed quelea (Quelea quelea). This species is often considered to be an agricultural pest, affecting cereal production throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
The temporal resolution and very large (continental) spatial coverage provided by these data can provide a unique context

A large tumour present on the proximal tibia of a Bull Mastiff dog was diagnosed on histological appearance as a Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma. These tumours, rarely identified in domestic animals, but well recognised in humans, are typically pleomorphic sarcomas with histiocytic and fibroblastic differentiation. The feeding methods, activities and behaviour of red-billed and yellow-billed oxpeckers in captivity were compared. Both species were found to be very similar with regard to feeding. The differences observed were a greater dependence on ectoparasites such as flies and larger ticks (Amblyomma hebraeum) and a higher food intake for the yellow-billed oxpecker. A case of generalised protothecosis in a Collie dog is discussed. A long-standing history of severe colitis was the major clinical sign. Dissemination to many organs was confirmed histologically. Possible pathogenesis is discussed along with a review of the literature. The possibility of a breed disposition in Collie dogs is discussed. To determine potential mechanisms of differential disease expression in ruminants infected with bluetongue virus (BTV), clinically normal, BTV-seronegative, yearling sheep and cattle were infected subcutaneously with a standardized insect-source inoculum of BTV serotype 17 (BTV-17) (three infected and one contact control each) or animal adapted BTV serotype 10 (BTV-10) (three sheep only). BTV was isolated from peripheral blood cell components of infected sheep and cattle and all infected animals showed evidence of seroconversion by 14 days post infection (PI). Sheep infected with both serotypes of BTV developed pyrexia, oral lesions, and leukopenia which were most severe on days 7-8 PI. Analysis of peripheral blood mononuclear leukocytes with specific monoclonal antibodies and flow cytometry revealed panlymphocytopenia on day 7 PI. This response was further characterized by an increase in the CD4/CD8 ratio (greater than 3) resultant from a greater decrease in absolute numbers of circulating SBU-T8(CD8+) ("cytotoxic/suppressor") lymphocytes compared to SBU-T4 (CD4)+ ("helper") lymphocytes. SBU-T19+ lymphocytes were also decreased below baseline values on days 5-14 post infection. On day 14 PI there were increased CD8+ lymphocytes and decreased CD4/CD8 ratios (approximately 0.6) in these sheep. Clinical and hematologic changes in cattle infected with BTV-17 were minimal and consisted of mild pyrexia (rectal temperature 103 degrees F) on day 9 PI in two of three infected animals and mild leukopenia on several days PI in one animal. This leukopenia was the result of a pan T lymphocytopenia with CD4/CD8 ratios in the expected range (1-2). Similar to infected sheep, infected cattle did have a shift (decrease, approximately 0.8) in the peripheral CD4/CD8 ratio associated with an increase in circulating BoT8 (CD8)+ lymphocytes on day 14 post infection. Lymphocytes in the peripheral blood of all sheep and cattle infected with BTV-17 proliferated in vitro in response to purified BTV-17. These results confirm and extend those of previous studies that indicate species differences in the hematologic response to an equivalent BTV infection in domestic ruminants. 相似文献

Context
Animal movements are inherently linked to landscape structure. Understanding this relationship for highly-mobile species requires documenting their responses to spatiotemporal variability of resources. To that end, characterizing movement behaviors and resource distributions using the principles of habitat connectivity facilitates coordinated landscape planning efforts within highly modified landscapes.Objectives and methods
We tracked locations and movements for 156 dunlin (Calidris alpina) and 109 long-billed dowitchers (Limnodromus scolopaceus) overwintering in two regions with distinct water distributions in California’s Central Valley. We then compared residency rates, functional connectivity to other regions, and associations between movement distances and average habitat availability and structural connectivity of habitat at multiple temporal and spatial scales.Results
A widespread yet highly variable regional water distribution was associated with lower residency rates and substantially higher functional connectivity to nearby regions when compared to a stable regional water distribution characterized by a large, contiguous wetland complex. Longer movements were associated with decreasing average availability and spatial aggregation of surface water. Movement models suggested shorebirds primarily responded to habitat availability at smaller scales (<?10 km) and structural connectivity at larger scales (≥?10 km).Conclusions
Differences in movement behaviors suggested that wintering shorebirds will avoid long distance movements and remain resident within a wetland region when possible. Conservation and management efforts should reliably flood individual wetlands and agricultural lands from November to April and prioritize locations that maximize structural wetland connectivity and limit spatiotemporal variability of surface water throughout the Central Valley.150.
