Abstract— Cat flea egg production usually peaks during the night, coinciding with normal sleep periods for indoor pet dogs and cats. Adult flea feeding activity and the production of dried-blood feces is not correlated with the sleep activity of the host. Eggs and dried-blood feces fall or are dislodged from the pelage of the host at sleep or resting sites. In a case study example, cat flea hatched eggs, and larval exuviae were found to have a clumped distribution within household carpet. The spatial distribution of the immature stages were influenced by the habits of the pet host indoors. First- and second-in star larvae do not move far from the location of egg deposition and hatch. The movement of the larval stage is influenced by several factors in the environment, including pedestrian and pet traffic. The distribution of larvae in household carpeting is correlated with the sleeping habits of the host and egg deposition habits of the cat flea. Résumé— La production d'oeufs des puces de chat est maximale habituellement durant la nuit, coïncidant ainsi avec les périodes de sommeil des chiens et des chat. L'activité alimentaire des puces adultes et la production de fèces n'est pas corrélé avec la période de sommeil de l'hôte. Les oeufs et les excréments tombent ou sont détachés du pelage de l'hôte pendant le sommeil ou dans les zones de repos. Dans une étude, les oeufs des puces de chat éclos et les exuvies larvaires, ont une distribution groupée dans les tapis de la maison. This study evaluates the influence of oceanic variability on plankton and fish production in a coastal upwelling system off southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. A trophodynamics model is used to hind-cast plankton and fish production as estimated by empirical seasonal patterns in upwelling, sea surface temperature, solar radiation, and by biomasses of Pacific hake (Merluccius productus) and Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi). Simulation results indicate that interannual and longer-term variability in coastal plankton production occurs, and that the patterns are primarily determined by the dynamics in the initiation and intensity of coastal upwelling. Fish properties are greatly influenced by zooplankton, with simulated hake production being correlated with summer euphausiid production, and measured herring condition being correlated with autumn zooplankton production. An evaluation of transfer efficiencies indicates that interannual variability in the diatom-to-fish transfer is high (CV = 78%), with the majority of this variability occurring in the diatom-to-zooplankton component of the transfer. Seasonal dynamics of the diatom-to-zooplankton transfer result from the effects of upwelling on diatom production, and subsequent trophodynamic phasing with copepods and euphausiids.  相似文献

Persistent haematuria had been observed for 5 months in a 9-year-old male Collie. Investigation, including intravenous pyleography and selective arteriography, led to the presumptive diagnosis of a discrete left renal mass. The dog made an uneventful recovery after left nephrectomy. Histologically the lesion proved to be a medullary and pelvic haemangioma.  相似文献

Three laboratory experiments were conducted to assess nutritional quality of cottonseed meals from genetically modified (GM) cotton crops, Roundup Ready® Flex, Bollgard® × Roundup Ready, Bollgard II® × Roundup Ready, and Bollgard II × Roundup Ready Flex for channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus using Good Laboratory Practices. Growth, feed efficiency, survival, and fillet composition of catfish fed diets containing 20% cottonseed meal from these cotton products were compared with that of catfish fed diets containing cottonseed meals from the near‐isogenic, non‐GM control and non‐GM commercial varieties. Juvenile catfish (mean weights of 4.1, 5.0, and 0.6 g per fish for Experiments 1, 2, and 3, respectively) were stocked in each of 80‐L aquaria and fed experimental diets for 8 weeks. Although there were slight variations in proximate composition, amino acids, and gossypol concentrations, the GM cottonseed meals were not significantly different from the conventional control and the reference cottonseed meals. Weight gain, feed conversion, survival, and fillet composition of catfish fed GM cottonseed meals appeared similar to that of either the control or the commercial cottonseed meals. Results from the present study demonstrate that these GM cottonseed meals are nutritionally equivalent to conventional non‐GM cotton varieties when fed to catfish at 20% of the diet.  相似文献

The dissolution of a reactive phosphate rock (Gafsa, GPR) was evaluated in a range of UK soils which varied considerably in calcium (Ca) status and in a soil that had been amended with different amounts of a cation exchange resin (CER) to provide a Ca sink of varying size. As expected, but not apparently previously reported, increasing solution Ca concentration caused a decrease in the dissolution of GPR, consistent with the solubility product principle. At 40 d, the extent of GPR dissolution was correlated more closely with soil solution Ca concentration (r=?0.91) than with either the number of unoccupied exchange sites for Ca or the Ca-exchange capacity (CaEC) of the soil (r=0.61 and r=?0.35, respectively). Unoccupied exchange sites for Ca were only effective in influencing GPR dissolution when solution Ca concentration was sufficiently low (< 1 mmol dm?3) for the sites to be operating on the well-buffered portion of the Ca-exchange isotherm. The combined effects of an initial low solution Ca concentration and the presence of unoccupied Ca exchange sites caused the relationship between GPR dissolution and solution Ca concentration to become curvilinear, whereby the proportion of GPR dissolved at 40 d could be related to the initial soil solution Ca concentration by an exponential equation. A similar interaction was obtained for the relationship between GPR dissolution and CaEC (operating at solution Ca concentrations ≥0.6 mmol dm?3) following the addition of CER to the soil. The effectiveness of the additional sites for Ca in maintaining the product of ionic concentrations below the solubility product of GPR was such that the amount of GPR dissolved at 40 d correlated linearly and strongly (r= 1.00) with the CaEC of the soil-CER mixtures.  相似文献

The efficacy of partial arytenoidectomy was assessed in 6 Standardbred horses, with surgically induced laryngeal hemiplegia, at rest (Period A) and during exercise at speeds corresponding to maximum heart rate (Period C) and 75% of maximum heart rate (Period B). Peak expiratory and inspiratory airflow rate (PEF and PIF), and expiratory and inspiratory transupper airway pressure (PUE and PUI) were measured and expiratory and inspiratory impedance (ZE and ZI) were calculated. Simultaneously, tidal breathing flow-volume loops (TBFVL) were acquired using a respiratory function computer. Indices derived from TBFVL included airflow rates at 50 and 25% of tidal volume (EF50, IF50, EF25. and IF25) and the ratios of expiratory to inspiratory flows. Measurements were made before left recurrent laryngeal neurectomy (baseline), 2 weeks after left recurrent laryngeal neurectomy (LRLN) and 16 weeks after left partial arytenoidectomy coupled with bilateral ventriculectomy (ARYT). After LRLN, during exercise Periods B and C, Z1 and the ratio of EF50/IF50 significantly increased and PIF, IF50 and IF25 significantly decreased from baseline values. At 16 weeks after ARYT, Z1 returned to baseline values during Periods B and C. Although PIF, IF50, IF25, PEF/PIF, and EF50/IF50 returned to baseline values during Period B, these indices remained significantly different from baseline measurements during Period C. After ARYT, TBFVL shapes from horses during Period C approached that seen at the baseline evaluation. Partial arytenoidectomy improved upper airway function in exercising horses with surgically induced left laryngeal hemiplegia, although qualitative and quantitative evaluation of TBFVLs suggested that some flow limitation remains at near maximal airflow rates. These results indicate that, although the procedure does not completely restore the upper airway to normal, partial arytenoidectomy is a viable treatment option for failed laryngoplasty and arytenoid chondropathy in the horse.  相似文献
