Fourteen cases of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) were diagnosed on the basis of clinical examination in a closed herd of British Friesian cows during a 9-month period from October 1987 until June 1988. The diagnosis was confirmed on histopathological examination of brain tissue from five of the six samples submitted. The main presenting clinical signs were of altered behaviour: apprehension, anxiety and hyperaesthesia. One cow was euthanized after a short period of recumbency; the remaining 13 cows were slaughtered on humane or economic grounds. No protein of animal origin had been fed to either heifers or cows in this herd during the past 5 years and there had been no direct contact with sheep. The epidemiology of BSE in this report suggests that, if the postulate of Morgan (1988) is correct, infection is ingested within the first 6 months of life and there then follows a 4-5-year period before clinical signs appear. 相似文献

Seminal, seminal vesicular, urethral and preputial fluids from bulls of two different age groups were assessed for quantitative differences in immunoglobulins. Selected markers were measured in individual samples to differentiate locally derived immunoglobulins from those present as a result of trauma or secretions from other accessory glands.Immunoglobulin levels in reproductive tract fluids from older bulls (5–6 years) were higher than those of younger bulls (3–4 years) and preputial fluids contained the highest concentration of immunoglobulins of all fluids examined. Similarities existed, however, among all fluids in the relative concentrations of immunoglobulins. IgG was generally in highest concentration, though the predominant subclass varied. A marked predominance of IgG2 over IgG1 occurred in preputial fluid samples of older bulls. IgA was in second highest concentration, and levels were often equal to or greater than those in serum. IgM was in low concentration and occasionally undetectable. IgG/IgA ratios did not exceed 5 in most of the reproductive fluids, whereas serum ratios were usually over 100. Proportional contents of albumin and immunoglobulin in reproductive tract fluids by comparison with those in serum indicated that substantial quantities of IgG as well as IgA were synthesized locally or derived by selective transport. Increased numbers of plasma cells in the lamina propria of the preputial and penile mucosa of older bulls were correlated with higher immunoglobulin concentrations in preputial fluid from older bulls, suggesting that differences in local synthesis were responsible. 相似文献

A study was conducted to assess the environmental safety of the endectocide eprinomectin to the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris under conditions mimicking typical product use on pasture. The LC50 value of eprinomectin in artificial soil after 28 days of exposure is higher than the levels expected in feces from dosed cattle or in soil fertilized with manure from dosed cattle, which indicates a wide margin of safety for this compound to earthworms. However, the no-observed-effect concentration has not been established. Therefore, the current study was conducted to determine whether there would be any effects on earthworms from feces from cattle treated with the commercial formulation of eprinomectin. Feces were collected rectally from grazing cattle on Day 0 before treatment and on Days 2, 4, 7 and 14 after treatment with EPRINEX (eprinomectin) Pour-On for Beef and Dairy Cattle (Merial Limited) at 0.5 mg eprinomectin per kg bodyweight. Assays of eprinomectin B1a (the major component of eprinomectin) were 0, 0.427, 0.152, 0.0512 and 0.00185 mg kg-1 wet weight of feces (equivalent to 0, 3.34, 1.19, 0.40 and 0.010 mg kg-1 on a dry weight basis, respectively). No significant differences (p>0.05) were observed at any day post-treatment in the survival or behavioral effects of any worms fed post-dose feces relative to the worms fed control feces. All post-dose comparisons of weight changes of living earthworms to the control group were not significantly different (p>0.05), indicating that treatment of cattle with EPRINEX (eprinomectin) Pour-On for Beef and Dairy Cattle did not affect feeding or weight gain of the earthworms. Twenty mature Holstein bulls (3 to 10 yr old) were used to test the effect of two semen collection regimens on spermatozoal output, post-thaw percentage spermatozoal motility, and time needed to make the collections/week. For both regimens, six ejaculates/wk were collected using either three ejaculates/d, 2 d/wk, or two ejaculates/d, 3 d/wk. A three-period switchback experimental design was used. Each collection period for which measurements were taken was 3 wk and was preceded by a 2 wk period of acclimation. The total number of spermatozoa harvested per week was not significantly different (P greater than .05): 33.2 X 10(9) when the bulls were collected two ejaculates 3 d/wk, compared with 33.9 X 10(9) three ejaculates 2 d/wk. Post-thaw progressive spermatozoal motility was 50.3 and 52.1% (P greater than .05), respectively. A 3‐year‐old, female spayed Australian Shepherd dog was presented to Veterinary Healthcare Associates in Winter Haven, FL with a history of respiratory stridor, difficulty swallowing, and a change in bark for approximately 3 months. Radiographs revealed a soft tissue mass caudal to the epiglottis. Oral and computerized tomographic (CT) examinations were performed under general anesthesia and revealed a small firm mass in the caudal larynx on the right side. Cytologic evaluation of a fine‐needle aspirate of the mass revealed cells consistent with a rhabdomyoma, oncocytoma, or granular cell tumor. Histopathologic interpretation was rhabdomyoma or oncocytoma. Histochemical staining with periodic acid‐Schiff was mostly negative with a low number of weakly positive cells and with phosphotungstic acid‐hematoxylin was strongly positive with visible cross striations. Tumor cells did not express pancytokeratin AE1/AE3, were strongly immunoreactive for myoglobin and muscle‐specific actin, and did not express vimentin except for a low number of weakly immunoreactive cells. These findings confirmed a diagnosis of rhabdomyoma. Primary neoplasia of the larynx is rare, and widely varying types of neoplasms have been documented in this location. Due to the cytologic and histologic similarities between rhabdomyoma, oncocytoma, and granular cell tumor, these neoplasms should be differentiated using histochemical staining and immunohistochemical analysis. 相似文献
