The coverage and recency of the major World Wide Web search engines was analyzed, yielding some surprising results. The coverage of any one engine is significantly limited: No single engine indexes more than about one-third of the "indexable Web," the coverage of the six engines investigated varies by an order of magnitude, and combining the results of the six engines yields about 3.5 times as many documents on average as compared with the results from only one engine. Analysis of the overlap between pairs of engines gives an estimated lower bound on the size of the indexable Web of 320 million pages. 相似文献

Members of the Botryosphaeriaceae, in particular Lasiodiplodia theobromae, Neofusicoccum parvum, N. mangiferum and Botryosphaeria dothidea, commonly cause stem cankers, dieback and stem end rot of mangoes worldwide. In the current study, eight taxa of Botryosphaeriaceae
were identified as canker-associated fungi, pathogens, potential pathogens or endophytes of mangoes in the Kimberley, Australia.
These include Neoscytalidium novaehollandiae, Ne. dimidiatum, Pseudofusicoccum adansoniae, P. ardesiacum, P. kimberleyense, Lasiodiplodia sp. 1, L. iraniensis and L. pseudotheobromae. The pathogenicity of a selection of these species toward fruit and branches was tested. All were pathogenic to mango in comparison
to the control, with Lasiodiplodia spp. being the most pathogenic. It appears that either geographic isolation or the unique growing conditions in the Kimberley
may have provided an effective barrier to the acquisition or establishment of known botryosphaeriaceous pathogens. Wounds

In a university beef herd of 304 cattle in which six died of lymphosarcoma between 1980 and 1984, 77% of the Angus and 26% of the Charolais cattle were determined to be infected with bovine leukemia virus (BLV). Changes in iatrogenic procedures were initiated as early control measures. In vitro viral expression (VE) was used as a criterion to identify cattle for subsequent segregation or culling. This involved determinations of percentages of BLV-associated lymphocyte profiles among thin-sectioned Ficoll-Paque-isolated blood lymphocytes that were processed into plastic after culture for 48 h. Cattle retained until completion of nutritional studies or as breeding stock were separated into two groups. The BLV-seronegative cattle, BLV-seropositive cattle with 0% VE, and BLV-seropositive cattle with 1% to 4% VE were placed in group 1. Seropositive cattle with greater than or equal to 5% VE were placed in group 2. In 1985, evaluation of in vitro VE in 108 mature BLV-seropositive cattle retained for breeding revealed 36 (33%) had no observable VE. In 1986, 58 of 108 cattle were available to be reexamined, and 21 (36%) had 0% VE in both years. The VE expression values for individual cattle were generally comparable over the 2-year period. Of 48 initial seronegative breeding stock housed in group 1 with BLV-seropositive cattle with low or no VE, 21 (44%) seroconverted during 1985 to 1986. A positive correlation of 0.585 was found between VE and age-related absolute lymphocyte number. 相似文献

A number of straight-chain and cyclic amidines at sub-lethal concentrations elicit a variety of responses from target organisms, usually expressed as a disruption of normal behaviour, leading to reduced feeding of lepidopterous larvae and tick detachment, or reduced fecundity. These effects are particularly evident in Acarina and Lepidoptera, but can also be seen in members of other insect orders. In some previously unpublished experiments, it was demonstrated that some of these compounds act as ‘locomotor stimulants’ to decrease the feeding of lepidopterous larvae. This type of activity probably results from the interaction of these compounds with aminergic in the case of some compounds identified as octopaminergic neurotransmitter/neuromodulator systems in the target organisms. Ninety-six crossbred intact male pigs (34.5 +/- 3.5 kg BW) were allocated by weight and vocalization score to a 2 x 2 x 2 dynamic experimental design including two stocking densities (1 or 2 m(2)/pig), two temperatures (22 degrees C and 30 degrees C), and two short groupings of unfamiliar cohorts (six pigs as one pig per group, and six pigs per group). The study was conducted over 8 wk, and live weight gain (WTG) and feed intake (FI; as-fed basis) were measured weekly. During the first week, pigs were housed in individual pens from four independent rooms. To group pigs, pen partitions were removed. Pigs were grouped in Rooms 2 and 3 from wk 2 to 4, and in Rooms 1 and 4 during wk 7. Temperature was increased from 22 degrees C to 30 degrees C in Rooms 1 and 2 during wk 4 and 7. Pen partitions were replaced in Rooms 2 and 3 at the end of wk 4 and in Rooms 1 and 4 at the end of wk 7 to return pigs to their individual pens. Grouping pigs decreased FI during wk 3 (15.08 +/- 0.43 vs. 14.03 +/- 0.41 kg P < 0.10), and during wk 7 (17.42 +/- 0.46 vs. 14.24 +/- 0.41 kg; P < 0.01). In addition, grouping had a negative effect (P < 0.001) on WTG at wk 3 (7.38 +/- 0.28 vs. 5.71 +/- 0.28 kg) and at wk 7 (6.70 +/- 0.26 vs. 2.99 +/- 0.26 kg). For grouped pigs, raising the temperature decreased (P < 0.01) WTG (7.49 +/- 0.29 vs. 6.41 +/- 0.29 kg during wk 4, and 3.37 +/- 0.38 vs. 2.62 +/- 0.38 kg during wk 7). Mean FI was decreased (P < 0.01) with the 30 degrees C treatment during wk 7 only (15.49 +/- 0.33 kg at 22 degrees C compared with 12.99 +/- 0.33 kg at 30 degrees C). Compensatory feed intake was evident after the treatments had ceased at wk 6, whereby previously heat-treated grouped pigs had a higher FI (17.97 +/- 0.45 kg) than the animals individually housed at 22 degrees C (12.99 +/- 0.33 kg). Stocking density effects were noted after the grouping and high temperature treatments had ceased. For instance, during wk 5, low-density-housed pigs grew faster (P < 0.001) than their high-density counterparts (9.04 +/- 0.38 vs. 7.49 +/- 0.29 kg). In conclusion, under the conditions of this study, the grouping of unfamiliar cohorts and high ambient temperature treatments had a detrimental effect on pig performance, and these effects were reversible. 相似文献

Because the poor growth performance of intensively housed pigs is associated with increased circulating glucocorticoid concentrations, we investigated the effects of glucocorticoid suppression by inducing a humoral immune response to ACTH on physiological and production variables in growing pigs. Grower pigs (28.6 +/- 0.9 kg) were immunized with amino acids 1 through 24 of ACTH conjugated to ovalbumin and suspended in diethylaminoethyl (DEAE) dextran-adjuvant or adjuvant alone (control) on d 1, 28, and 56. The ACTH-specific antibody titers generated suppressed increases in cortisol concentrations on d 63 in response to an acute stressor (P = 0.002; control = 71 +/- 8.2 ng/mL; ACTH-immune = 43 +/- 4.9 ng/mL) without altering basal concentrations. Plasma beta-endorphin concentrations were also increased (P < 0.001) on d 63 (control = 18 +/- 2.1 ng/mL; ACTH-immune = 63 +/- 7.3 ng/mL), presumably because of a release from negative feedback on the expression of proopiomelanocortin in pituitary corticotropes. Immunization against ACTH did not alter ADG (P = 0.120; control = 1,077 +/- 25; ACTH-immune = 1,143 +/- 25 g) or ADFI (P = 0.64; control = 2,719 +/- 42; ACTH-immune = 2,749 +/- 42 g) and did not modify behavior (P = 0.681) assessed by measuring vocalization in response to acute restraint. In summary, suppression of stress-induced cortisol responses through ACTH immunization increased beta-endorphin concentrations, but it did not modify ADG, ADFI, or restraint vocalization score in growing pigs. 相似文献

Funisitis, inflammation of the umbilical cord, is well recognized in human placentas. This report describes a case of funisitis associated with leptospiral infection in the placenta of a Thoroughbred foal born prematurely. The umbilical cord had diffuse superficial yellow discoloration along its entire length. Microscopic evaluation showed an exudate of neutrophils admixed with fibrin on the surface. Warthin-Starry staining showed spirochetes in the Wharton's jelly of the umbilical cord. A locally extensive, severe placentitis not involving the star and allantoic cystic hyperplasia were the other lesions observed in the allantochorion. Leptospira funisitis is similar to the funisitis of congenital syphilis in humans, although there are some major microscopic differences. In Leptospira funisitis, lesions were limited to the cord surface, whereas in lesions in human umbilical cords with Treponema pallidum infection, the changes are observed mostly around the vessels and in the Wharton's jelly. 相似文献

The efficacy of an injectable formulation of danofloxacin (180 mg/ml) in the treatment of naturally occurring bovine respiratory disease was evaluated in field studies on farms in France, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Cattle aged one week to 15 months with clinical respiratory disease were randomly allocated to treatment with 6 mg/kg danofloxacin or 10 mg/kg tilmicosin, administered by a single subcutaneous injection on day 0. A second injection of danofloxacin was administered on day 2, only if predefined clinical criteria were met. Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida and Haemophilus somnus were isolated from pretreatment nasopharyngeal swabs taken on all the farms. After the treatment, there was a more rapid improvement in the clinical response of the 178 animals treated with danofloxacin by day 2 (P < 0.01) than in the 90 treated with tilmicosin. For both treatments, there were similar significant (P < 0.001) reductions in the mean rectal temperature and severity of clinical signs of abnormal respiration and depression, on days 4 and 10 compared with day 0; 78.1 per cent of the animals treated with danofloxacin and 78.5 per cent of those treated with tilmicosin completed the studies. Danofloxacin 18 per cent was clinically safe and as effective as tilmicosin in the treatment of bovine respiratory disease. 相似文献
