A total of 360 samples including fresh fecal droppings, neck skins, and swab samples was collected from 24 broiler flocks and processed by 12 modern processing plants in 6 states in Malaysia. Ninety samples from 10 traditional wet markets located in the same states as modern processing plants were also collected. Microbiological isolation for Campylobacter was performed following ISO 10272-1:2006 (E). The overall rate of contamination for Campylobacter in modern processing plants and in traditional wet markets was 61.1% (220/360) and 85.6% (77/90), respectively. Campylobacter jejuni was detected as the majority with approximately 70% for both facilities. In the modern processing plants, the contamination rate for Campylobacter gradually declined from 80.6% before the inside-outside washing to 62.5% after inside-outside washing and to 38.9% after the post chilling step. The contamination rate for Campylobacter from processed chicken neck skin in traditional wet markets (93.3%) was significantly (P<0.01) higher than in modern processing plants (38.9%).  相似文献

Three halogenated hydrocarbon compounds were applied to the surface of each of two .57 ha bluegrass plots in October. Each plot was stocked with 10 mature ewes 6 mo after application. Supplemental feed was not offered. Five ewes remained on the plots for 180 d, whereas the other five were removed and replaced at 60-d intervals. Average soil residues for the period of grazing were 13.3, 3.8, 29.3 and 32.8 mg/m2 HCB (hexachlorobenzene), DDE [1,1-dichloro-2,2-bi(p-chlorophenyl)ethylene], DDT [1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis-(p-chlorophenyl)ethane] and PBB (polybrominated biphenyls), respectively, for plot 1 and 16.5 and 48.0 mg/m2 DDE and PBB, respectively, for plot 2. Average concentrations of residue in body fat of the five ewes grazing for 180 d were .37, .30 and .30 micrograms/g HCB, DDE and PBB, respectively, for plot 1 and 2.41 and .79 micrograms/g DDE and PBB, respectively, for plot 2. Average residue concentrations in ewes that grazed 60-d subperiods were nearly as great, which indicated that steady state residue levels were reached in less than 180 d. A second trial and was conducted 3 yr later after plowing and reseeding the plots, but only PBB was measured. Polybrominated biphenyl was distributed throughout the top 16 cm of soil but the quantity present had not changed appreciably from the first trial. After seven ewes/plot grazed 136 d, residues were detected in only one of the seven on plot 1, but were detected in all seven on plot 2 with an average concentration of only .032 micrograms/g. It is concluded that concentration of residue in body fat of ewes depended on the concentration of chemical at the soil surface and the amount of soil ingested.  相似文献

COX-2-derived prostacyclin confers atheroprotection on female mice   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Female gender affords relative protection from cardiovascular disease until the menopause. We report that estrogen acts on estrogen receptor subtype alpha to up-regulate the production of atheroprotective prostacyclin, PGI2, by activation of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2). This mechanism restrained both oxidant stress and platelet activation that contribute to atherogenesis in female mice. Deletion of the PGI2 receptor removed the atheroprotective effect of estrogen in ovariectomized female mice. This suggests that chronic treatment of patients with selective inhibitors of COX-2 could undermine protection from cardiovascular disease in premenopausal females.  相似文献

In crowded visual scenes, attention is needed to select relevant stimuli. To study the underlying mechanisms, we recorded neurons in cortical area V4 while macaque monkeys attended to behaviorally relevant stimuli and ignored distracters. Neurons activated by the attended stimulus showed increased gamma-frequency (35 to 90 hertz) synchronization but reduced low-frequency (<17 hertz) synchronization compared with neurons at nearby V4 sites activated by distracters. Because postsynaptic integration times are short, these localized changes in synchronization may serve to amplify behaviorally relevant signals in the cortex.  相似文献

Mass balances of 2,3,7,8-substituted dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) were measured in cows following administration of pentachlorophenol (PCP)-treated wood. Fecal excretion accounted for the major fraction of all congeners. Recovery in feces increased with increasing chlorination, while storage in body fat and excretion in milk decreased with increasing chlorination. The PCDFs with no chlorines in the 4- and 6-positions were apparently metabolized because residues were not detected in milk and body fat. Storage and excretion of 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDD and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9-OCDD exceeded intake by factors of 1.7 and 3.4, but recovery of other PCDD/Fs did not exceed intake significantly. Excess excretion of OCDD, but not HpCDD, was confirmed in a follow-up study. Synthesis of HpCDD and OCDD did not occur when PCP-treated wood was fermented with rumen microorganisms, and enhanced concentrations of HpCDD and OCDD were not found in gastrointestinal tract contents of dosed animals. Formation of OCDD during incubation of feces spiked with PCP-treated wood led to the conclusion that synthesis was postexcretion during sample preparation.  相似文献

Hip dysplasia is a common developmental problem affecting the canine population. Despite extensive research into the condition, many questions remain unanswered and numerous misconceptions are present among the general public. The purpose of this paper is to review the current knowledge on the development of hip dysplasia, factors modifying its development, and current diagnostic techniques. A computerized literature search was conducted for the period of January 1983 to April 1985 using the MEDLINE and CAB databases, and the keywords hip dysplasia, hip, dog, and canine. Other articles, wherever possible original research articles, published before 1983 were also reviewed. Animals affected by hip dysplasia are born with normal hips, but quickly develop subluxation of the femoral head. Degenerative joint disease follows. Hip dysplasia is a complex, inherited, polygenic trait. Selective breeding of only normal dogs with normal littermates, parents, and grandparents is the recommended method of reducing the incidence in the general population. Gene expression in affected individuals may be modified by a number of environmental factors. These factors do not cause hip dysplasia, but they alter manifestations of the trait and its severity. Nutrition is a major environmental factor. Excess energy consumption increases the frequency and severity of hip dysplasia in genetically predisposed dogs. Food intake should be regulated to maintain a slender figure with the ribs and dorsal vertebral spines easily palpable, but not visible. Excess dietary calcium and vitamin D contribute to hip dysplasia in genetically predisposed individuals and should be avoided. High dose vitamin C supplementation in growing puppies does not prevent hip dysplasia, and this practice should be discontinued.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

In Europe, meat inspection procedures have been established in the course of the last century. Techniques at that time available were used. This traditional approach has been taken over with the regularisation in the EEC. However, in order to scrutinise this approach as well as to specify modern tasks of meat inspection, a scientific and more basic approach is required and could read as follows: Pointing out the tasks of meat inspection as wanted by the specific society (human health, animal health and welfare as well as a certain quality level of the product). Collecting of particular criteria in order to ensure every task mentioned above. This could be addressed by use of a system based on the principles of Risk Analysis (identification and characterisation of a hazard (or unwanted item), consumer's exposure assessment). Having deduced the required criteria, for each of them an appropriate method must be available. Only then an overall system might be suggested, and only then particular techniques might be discussed. From examples is concluded, that the technical performance of meat inspection must be re-evaluated. Presently a total concept is not available.  相似文献

The primary aim of this study was to determine regional and age-dependent expression patterns of Toll-like receptors (TLRs), peptidoglycan recognition protein 1 (PGLYRP1), and β-defensin in rumen, jejunum, ileum, cecum and colon of 3 week (n=8) and 6 month old (n=8) calves. The expression of most TLRs was significantly down-regulated throughout the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) with increasing age. TLR10 expression was significantly higher in ileum than all other gut regions, irrespective of age. TLR2 and TLR4 expression were significantly higher in the cecum and colon of 6 month old calves. Furthermore, expression of β-defensin, and PGLYRP1 was only detectable in 6 month old calves. The expression of TLRs was positively or negatively correlated with population of total bacteria and/or lactic acid bacteria depending on the GIT region. These observations indicate that innate immune responses to commensal microflora may vary significantly throughout the GIT and with age changes.  相似文献
