LOW RELEASE OF SELENIUM FROM RECOVERED RUMINAL PELLETS 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effectiveness of selenium pellets in grazing Merino sheep was examined by comparing the selenium status of treated and untreated animals over a 13 month period. The selenium status of treated sheep, as measured by blood glutathione peroxidase levels, had reached a maximum 3 months after treatment and there was a marked decline between 5 and 13 months. All pellets were recovered from treated sheep at slaughter this confirmed that the observed decline was not due to a loss of pellets.
In a separate study sheep were slaughtered 14 months after treatment and some of the recovered pellets were readministered to sheep maintained on a low selenium diet. The selenium status of the sheep receiving recovered pellets remained low. This bioassay technique indicated that there was little available selenium released from these pellets. Sixty-three Escherichia coli strains isolated from broilers with respiratory problems were examined for virulence factors, hemolysin synthesis ability, motility, hemagglutination capacity, operon pap presence, colicin production, and serum resistance. The capacity to hemagglutinate guinea pig erythrocytes was found in 53 (84.1%) of the samples, but only 30 (47.6%) agglutinated chicken erythrocytes. D-mannose-sensitive hemagglutination against guinea pig erythrocytes was found in 19 (30.2%) samples and against chicken erythrocytes, in 15 (23.8%) samples, whereas the D-mannose-resistant hemagglutination with guinea pig erythrocytes was found in 34 (54%) samples, and 13 of these (20.6%) showed this characteristic against chicken erythrocytes. Operon pap, P fimbria codifier, was detected in 26 samples in a total of 34 D-mannose-resistant samples. Colicin production was observed in 55 (87.3%) of the strains, and 41.8% presented V colicin production. Of the samples analyzed, 56 (88.9%) presented serum resistance, six (9.5%) were intermediate, and only one (1.6%) was sensitive to the action of the complement. The diversity of virulence profiles detected in the samples in this study explains in part the multifactorial characteristics of avian colibacillosis. 相似文献

The health and housing of the stock on 26 organic dairy herds in four counties in eastern Sweden were studied for one year. The herds ranged in size from 12 to 64 cows, and their milk production from 3772 to 10,334 kg per cow per year. A large-animal practitioner visited the farms three times during the year, and a random sample of a third of the cows in each herd were examined. The calves and young stock and their housing were also studied. The calves were in good condition in all but four herds; their serum immunoglobulins varied from almost none to high levels. The young stock were in good condition and in good housing in 20 herds. No cows with clinical signs of metabolic disorders were found. Body condition scores were adequate or good except in two herds. Acetone was analysed in milk samples from individual cows three to six weeks postpartum, and only sporadic cases with high levels were found. The incidence of diseases treated by a veterinarian was lower in the organic herds than the average for the conventional herds in the local dairy association. The findings at the farm visits supported these data, and it is evident that a good standard of health and welfare can be achieved in organic dairy herds. 相似文献

CD69 is rapidly inducible on various hematopoietic cells upon stimulation and is detectable as an early activation antigen. Although CD69 is well characterized in human and mouse, no information is available on bovine CD69. We report here that, bovine CD69 was cloned from a cDNA expression library prepared from activated peripheral blood lymphocytes. The full-length cDNA contained an 80bp 5' untranslated region, followed by a 600bp coding region and AU-rich motifs in a 3' untranslated region (GenBank accession number AF272828). Comparison of the bovine CD69 coding sequence reveals 69.4 and 78.2% nucleotide sequence identities with mouse and human CD69, respectively. The predicted amino acid sequence of bovine CD69 shares 56.3 and 62.3% sequence identity when compared with mouse and human CD69, respectively. Bovine CD69 has the highly conserved amino acid sequences found in the C-type lectin family, suggesting that the conserved residues may be important for conformation and binding to the, as yet unidentified ligand. In addition, the cytoplasmic tail of bovine CD69 has two casein kinase-2 (CK-2) phosphorylation sites. These data suggest that bovine CD69 plays an important role in the activation of lymphocytes. 相似文献

Trypanosoma cruzi-like flagellates were incidentally noted in blood smears of a routinely monitored rhesus monkey experimentally infected with the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV). Immunodeficiency in the course of the SIV infection reactivated a chronic infection of Chagas' disease that had been unnoticed when the macaque was imported to Europe. The animal developed no specific clinical symptoms of American trypanosomiasis, but histologically a chagasic myocarditis was detected. A cooperative research study involving 635 gilts was conducted at eight research stations to further estimate the lysine requirement of finishing gilts. Dietary crude protein levels of the five dietary treatments ranged from 16.0 to 24.4% with calculated lysine levels of .80, .95, 1.10, 1.25, or 1.40%. Each station contributed a minimum of two replicate pens of pigs per treatment. Average initial and final weights were 53.6 and 116.4 kg, respectively. At the end of the experimental period, pigs were killed and hot carcass weight, 10th-rib fat depth, and longissimus muscle area were measured. Carcass fat-free lean percentage and fat-free lean gain were estimated from these data. Daily lysine intakes averaged 21.8, 25.9, 30.5, 34.3, and 37.8 g/d for the five treatment groups, respectively. Increasing the dietary lysine from .80 to .95% numerically increased weight gain and gain:feed, but these increases were not maintained at higher levels of dietary lysine. Overall, rate and efficiency of gain decreased (cubic, P < .01) with increasing dietary lysine. Carcasses were leaner at the two higher levels of dietary lysine as evidenced by reduced 10th rib backfat (linear, P < .01), increased longissimus area (quadratic, P < .04), and increased percentage of estimated fat-free lean (linear, P < .01). Carcass fat-free lean gain was not influenced by dietary lysine except for a small numerical improvement (P < .11) at the .95% level of dietary lysine that paralleled the improvement in body weight gain. The results indicate that the dietary lysine requirement of finishing gilts with a mean carcass fat-free lean growth rate of 306 g/d from 54 to 116 kg body weight is probably no higher than .80% of the diet to achieve maximum rate and efficiency of body weight gain and carcass lean growth rate. The results also indicate that higher dietary lysine levels may increase carcass leanness in finishing gilts, possibly due to reduced intake of NE. A cooperative research study was conducted by members of a regional committee (North Central Regional Committee on Swine Nutrition [NCR-42]) to assess the variability in nutrient composition (DM, CP, Ca, P, Se, NDF, and amino acids) of 14 sources of wheat middlings from 13 states (mostly in the Midwest). A second objective was to assess the analytical variability in nutrient assays among 20 laboratories (labs; 14 experiment station labs and six commercial labs). Wheat middlings were obtained from each participating station's feed mill. The bulk density of the middlings ranged from 289 to 365 g/L. The number of labs that analyzed samples were as follows: DM and CP, 20; Ca, 16; P, 15; Se, 7; NDF, 10; and amino acids, 9. Each lab used its own analytical procedures. The middlings averaged 89.6% DM, 16.2% CP, .12% Ca, .97% P, 36.9% NDF, .53 mg/kg Se, .66% lysine, .19% tryptophan, .54% threonine, .25% methionine, .34% cystine, .50% isoleucine, and .73% valine. As expected, there was considerable variation in nutrient composition among the 14 sources (P < .01), especially for Ca (.08 to .30%) and Se (.05 to 1.07 mg/kg). "Heavy" middlings (high bulk density, >335 g/L), having a greater proportion of flour attached to the bran, were lower in CP, lysine, P, and NDF than "light" middlings (<310 g/L), having cleaner bran, resulting in negative correlations between bulk density and CP (r = -.61), lysine (r = -.59), P (r = -.54), and NDF (r = -.81). Each 1-percentage-point increase in CP in the wheat middlings was associated with .0235 (r2 = .61) and 2.1 (r2 = .39)-percentage-point increases in lysine and NDF, respectively. Lysine content was associated with NDF, CP, and bulk density of wheat middlings (r2 = .88). There was considerable variation among laboratories (P < .01) in analysis of all nutrients. The CV among sources (100 x sigmaS/mean) was greater than among labs (100 x sigmaL/mean) for CP, Ca, P, Se, and NDF, but the CV among labs was greater than that among sources for DM and all of the amino acids except lysine and phenylalanine. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of the Halothane (N) and Rendement Napole (RN) genes on carcass and meat quality characteristics in pigs. Halothane and RN carrier (Nn/RN- rn+) Hampshire boars (n = 4) were mated to dams that were homozygous for the normal allele of both genes (NN/rn+ rn+) to produce progeny of four genotypes: 1, NN/rn+ rn+ (n = 31); 2, Nn/rn+ rn+ (n = 27); 3, NN/RN- rn+) (n = 30); and 4, Nn/RN- rn+ (n = 23). A DNA test was used to determine Halothane genotype, and longissimus glycolytic potential was used to predict the RN genotype. Pigs were reared under standard conditions to approximately 120 kg live weight and slaughtered at a commercial plant, and carcass characteristics and meat quality were evaluated. Halothane carriers (Nn/ _ _), in comparison to Halothane normal (NN/_ _) pigs, had shorter carcasses, lower longissimus ultimate pH, higher Minolta L* and b* values, and greater drip loss. Rendement Napole gene carriers (_ _/RN- rn+) had higher L* and b* values and drip and cooking loss and lower longissimus ultimate pH than homozygous recessive animals (_ _/rn+ rn+). There were Halothane x RN genotype interactions (P < 0.05) for subjective color, firmness, and marbling scores, and for shear force. Animals that were normal for both genes (NN/rn+ rn+) had the highest subjective scores for color (2.60, 1.88, 1.85, and 1.95, SE = 0.181, P < 0.05), firmness (2.53, 2.03, 2.10, and 1.89, SE = 0.182, P < 0 .05), and marbling (2.11, 1.44, 1.53, and 1.55, SE = 0.153, P < 0 .05) for genotypes 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively, suggesting darker, firmer muscle with a higher level of marbling for this genotype. Shear force was highest for Nn/rn+ rn+ animals (3.83, 4.41, 3.79, and 3.70, respectively, SE = 0.172, P < 0.05). Gilts had less s.c. backfat thickness, greater longissimus muscle area, and lower subjective marbling scores than barrows. There was no effect (P > 0.05) of gender on other meat quality traits. This study illustrates the negative effects of the Halothane and RN genes on fresh pork quality and suggests that in combination the detrimental effects of the two genes are additive for ultimate pH, objective color, and water-holding capacity. 相似文献
