Channel catfish feed intake and growth decline with temperature, but different dietary lipids might sustain performance during cool weather. Catfish at a suboptimal temperature (22°C) were fed 32% protein commercial floating pellets supplemented with 2% soybean oil (SBO), menhaden oil (MFO), or flaxseed oil (FLX). After 12 weeks, fish were counted and weighed, then health assays and proximate and fatty acid analysis of fillets were conducted. Weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and survival were similar among treatments, indicating limited potential of different lipids to improve growth at low temperatures. However, the favorable feed conversion ratios (FCRs; ≤1.6) indicated that feeding at 22°C was worthwhile to maintain good condition of catfish. Across diets, the unsaturated fatty acids in muscle lipids increased. The FLX and MFO both increased the n-3 HUFA in the fillet, but FLX was less effective. Hyperspectral visible near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (VNIRRS) and geostatistical methods are considered for precision
soil mapping. This study evaluated whether VNIR or geostatistics, or their combined use, could provide efficient approaches
for assessing the soil spatially and associated reductions in sample size using soil samples from a 32 ha area (800 × 400 m)
in northern Turkey. Soil variables considered were CaCO3, organic matter, clay, sand and silt contents, pH, electrical conductivity, cation exchange capacity (CEC) and exchangeable
cations (Ca, Mg, Na and K). Cross-validation was used to compare the two approaches using all grid data (n = 512), systematic selections of 13, 25 and 50% of the data and random selections of 13 and 25% for calibration; the remaining
data were used for validation. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) analysis was used for calibrating soil properties from
first derivative VNIR reflectance spectra (VNIRRS), whereas ordinary-, co- and regression-kriging were used for spatial prediction.
The VNIRRS-PLSR method provided better prediction results than ordinary kriging for soil organic matter, clay and sand contents,
(R
2 values of 0.56–0.73, 0.79–0.85, 0.65–0.79, respectively) and smaller root mean squared errors of prediction (values of 2.7–4.1,
37.4–43, 46.9–61, respectively). The EC, pH, Na, K and silt content were predicted poorly by both approaches because either
the variables showed little variation or the data were not spatially correlated. Overall, the prediction accuracy of VNIRRS-PLSR
was not affected by sample size as much as it was for ordinary kriging. Cokriging (COK) and regression kriging (RK) were applied
to a combination of values predicted by VNIR reflectance spectroscopy and measured in the laboratory to improve the accuracy
of prediction of the soil properties. The results showed that both COK and RK with VNIRRS estimates improved the predictions
of soil variables compared to VNIRRS and OK. The combined use of VNIRRS and multivariate geostatistics results in better spatial

Poplar species grow well across the temperate zone, but hybrid varieties have not previously been evaluated for planting in the Virginia Piedmont region. The top 12 clones in height growth and rust resistance from a screening trial involving 98 hybrid poplar varieties of three taxa (Populus deltoides × P. maximowiczii, DxM; P. deltoides × P. nigra, DxN; P. deltoides × P. trichocarpa, DxT) were selected for planting in replicated yield trials at two locations in the Virginia Piedmont. Results through the first four growing seasons showed that the DxM taxon had the most rapid height development. It was, however, the taxon most affected by a late spring frost at the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest site and by Septoria stem canker at the Reynolds Homestead site. Analysis of variance of clonal and location effects showed highly significant differences among replicates within location and among clones within taxon. Among seven clones within the DxM taxon, pairwise comparison tests of height growth identified two groups: a group of four better clones that were significantly different (p = 0.05) from a second group of three. These early results suggest that multi-selection criteria, including growth, disease and frost resistance, are important when developing hybrid poplar clones for planting in the Piedmont region. 相似文献

Background
An in-clinic assay for equine serum amyloid A (SAA) analysis, Equinostic EVA1, was evaluated for use in a clinical setting. Stability of SAA in serum samples was determined.Methods
Intra- and inter- assay variation of the in-clinic method was determined. The in-clinic method (EVA1) results were compared to a reference method (Eiken LZ SAA) with 62 patient samples. For samples with SAA concentrations within the assay range of EVA1 (10-270 mg/L), differences between the methods were evaluated in a difference plot. Linearity under dilution was evaluated in two samples. Stability of SAA in three serum pools stored at 4°C and approximately 22°C was evaluated with the reference method day 0, 1, 2, 4, 7, 17 and analysed with a two-way ANOVA.Results
The imprecision (coefficient of variation, CV) for the in-clinic method was acceptable at higher SAA concentrations with CV values of 7,3-12%, but poor at low SAA concentrations with CV values of 27% and 37% for intra- and inter-assay variation respectively. Recovery after dilution was 50-138%. The in-clinic assay and the reference method identified equally well horses with low (<10 mg/L) and high (>270 mg/L) SAA concentrations. Within the assay range of the in-clinic method, 10-270 mg/L, the difference between the two methods was slightly higher than could be explained by the inherent imprecision of the assays. There were no significant changes of serum SAA concentrations during storage.Conclusions
The in-clinic assay identified horses with SAA concentrations of <10 mg/L and >270 mg/L in a similar way as the reference method, and provided an estimate of the SAA concentration in the range of 10-270 mg/L. The imprecision of the in-clinic method was acceptable at high SAA concentrations but not at low concentrations. Dilution of samples gave inconsistent results. Many oomycete and fungal plant pathogens are obligate biotrophs, which extract nutrients only from living plant tissue and cannot grow apart from their hosts. Although these pathogens cause substantial crop losses, little is known about the molecular basis or evolution of obligate biotrophy. Here, we report the genome sequence of the oomycete Hyaloperonospora arabidopsidis (Hpa), an obligate biotroph and natural pathogen of Arabidopsis thaliana. In comparison with genomes of related, hemibiotrophic Phytophthora species, the Hpa genome exhibits dramatic reductions in genes encoding (i) RXLR effectors and other secreted pathogenicity proteins, (ii) enzymes for assimilation of inorganic nitrogen and sulfur, and (iii) proteins associated with zoospore formation and motility. Seventeen test foods were each analyzed by four methods. Total lysine was measured by conventional amino acid analysis. Reactive lysine was measured with either fluorodinitrobenzene, o-phthalaldehyde or a differential dye-binding procedure. The results were then compared with another group's results from rat growth assays of the same samples for availably lysine. A sample of deliberately heat-damaged milk powder gave a rat assay value corresponding to 64% of its total lysine content; other values were all higher and on average 99% for 7 animal products, and 87% for 9 vegetable products. The correlation coefficient between the two sets of values was 0.95. The reactive lysine procedures failed to give a better prediction of the rat values. 相似文献

Colitis in the adult horse is a life-threatening clinical condition that can be caused by any of several enteric pathogens. This study was conducted to determine whether treating horses with plasma obtained from donors that were hyperimmunized against the common equine diarrheal pathogens Clostridium difficile, Clostridium perfringens, and Salmonella sp shortens the duration of diarrhea in acute colitis. To evaluate the efficacy of plasma treatment, 42 horses with acute onset of diarrhea were studied. Horses were enrolled if they were of age >1 year, duration of diarrhea at presentation was <72 hours, and they had not received equine plasma within the last 3 months. In addition, the serum cortisol concentrations of horses with acute diarrhea were studied.Horses were randomized to receive hyperimmunized plasma, control plasma (collected from nonimmunized horses), or no plasma therapy. Clinical parameters and fecal consistency were observed until resolution, discharge, or death, and complete blood counts (CBCs) and biochemical profiles were collected throughout the study. A total of 38 horses completed the study. The mean duration of diarrhea was 40.7 ± 9.8 (mean ± SEM) hours, 119.2 ± 56.1 hours, and 72.0 ± 24.5 hours for the hyperimmunized plasma, normal plasma (NP), and control groups, respectively. Using survival analysis techniques, this difference did not achieve statistical significance (P = .374). Serum cortisol was found to be increased in all horses at presentation and to decrease with time in all treatment groups. In order to confirm a microscopic diagnosis of 'eperythrozoonosis' made over 40 years ago in a captive owl monkey (Aotus trivirgatus), DNA was extracted from archived fixed and stained blood smears and subjected to generic haemotropic mycoplasma (haemoplasma) quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and a human glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase qPCR as an amplification control. The qPCRs confirmed the extraction of host DNA from the samples and the presence of a haemoplasma species. Partial 16S rRNA and ribonuclease P ribosomal gene fragments were amplified by PCR, cloned and sequenced. Sequence data and phylogeny showed the owl monkey haemoplasma to lie in the haemominutum clade of haemoplasmas, most closely related to 'Candidatus Mycoplasma kahaneii'. This study confirms the use of generic haemoplasma qPCRs to successfully amplify haemoplasma DNA from fixed, stained and archived blood smears from the early 1970s and provides molecular confirmation of the existence of a novel haemoplasma species in an owl monkey, for which the name 'Candidatus Mycoplasma aoti' sp. nov. is proposed. 相似文献
