Evidence has been obtained that guard cells and other epidermal cells as well as mesophyll cells undergo division during wound repair of mature leaves in 26 magnoliaceous taxa in the genera Kmeria, Elmerrillia, Magnolia, Manglietia, Michelia, Paramichelia, and Talauma. Division of epidermal cells is believed to be rare in mature leaves, and division of guard cells is particularly unusual in most species previously studied.  相似文献

Injury to the origin of the gastrocnemius muscle as a possible cause of lameness in four horses

Four horses were evaluated because of hind limb lameness. Two had a distinct gait abnormality at the walk characterized by lateral rotation of the point of the calcaneus and medial rotation of the toe during the stance phase. Nuclear scintigraphy revealed a focal area of intense radioisotope uptake in the caudodistal aspect of the femur in all 4 horses, and 3 of the horses had a corresponding proliferative reaction on the caudodistal cortex of the femur on radiographs. In all 4 horses, a diagnosis of injury to the origin of the gastrocnemius muscle was made. Three of the horses returned to athletic endeavors after an extended period of rest and a gradual return to exercise. The fourth improved after 5 months of rest but became lame again when returned to exercise and was euthanatized.  相似文献   

The effects of thyroid hormones on the skin of beagle dogs

The effects of hypothyroidism on canine skin were determined by comparing morphologic, morphometric, and hair cycle differences in skin biopsy samples from 3 groups of age- and gender-matched Beagle dogs: (1) euthyroid dogs; (2) dogs made hypothyroid by administration of 131I; and (3) dogs made hypothyroid and maintained in a euthyroid state by treatment with synthetic thyroxine. After 10 months of observation, there was slower regrowth of hair 2 months after clipping in the untreated-hypothyroid dogs. Untreated-hypothyroid dogs had a greater number of follicles in telogen and fewer hair shafts (ie, a greater number of hairless telogen follicles) than did the control group. The control dogs had a greater number of telogen follicles but the same number of hair shafts as the treated-hypothyroid group. Treated-hypothyroid dogs had the greatest number of follicles in the growing stage of the hair cycle (anagen). This study suggests that, at least in Beagles, induced hypothyroidism does not affect the pelage as dramatically as has been described in naturally occurring disease. This is because normal Beagles retain hair shafts in follicles for long periods, and the alopecia of hypothyroidism appears to evolve slowly because of the prolongation of this haired telogen stage. The evaluation of thyroxine-treated hypothyroid dogs demonstrates that thyroid hormone supplementation of Beagle dogs with induced hypothyroidism stimulates hair growth.  相似文献

We report a thick, laterally extensive 2505 +/- 2.2-million-year-old (uranium-lead ratio in zircon) Archean ophiolite complex in the North China craton. Basal harzburgite tectonite is overlain by cumulate ultramafic rocks, a mafic-ultramafic transition zone of interlayered gabbro and ultramafic cumulates, compositionally layered olivine-gabbro and pyroxenite, and isotropic gabbro. A sheeted dike complex is rooted in the gabbro and overlain by a mixed dike-pillow lava section, chert, and banded iron formation. The documentation of a complete Archean ophiolite implies that mechanisms of oceanic crustal accretion similar to those of today were in operation by 2.5 billion years ago at divergent plate margins and that the temperature of the early mantle was not extremely elevated, as compared to the present-day temperature. Plate tectonic processes similar to those of the present must also have emplaced the ophiolite in a convergent margin setting.  相似文献   

Primary hemangiosarcoma of the iliopsoas muscle eliciting a peripheral neuropathy

An eight-year-old, male castrated bullmastiff presented to the Kansas State University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital with left hind-limb paralysis. A mass was identified in the left paralumbar soft tissue adjacent to the fourth (L4) to sixth (L6) lumbar vertebrae by magnetic resonance imaging. The iliopsoas muscle contained the mass which was identified as a hemangiosarcoma on histopathological examination. Hemangiosarcoma is rarely reported as a primary tumor arising from muscle vascular endothelium.  相似文献
